Can Genetics be the Cause of Acne in Adult

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Can Genetics be the Cause of Acne in Adult

Acne is a condition that usually occurs when you are in your adolescence, but sometimes it can happen when you are an adult as well. In women, it occurs when they have reached their menopausal age. The chances of adult acne occurring in women are higher than men.

What causes acne in adults

  1. Stress: If you are under stress on a regular basis, then the body tends to produce a hormone called androgen which stimulates oil glands in the skin, resulting in acne flare ups.
  2. Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal imbalance in the body may lead to acne breakouts. You may experience imbalances in your hormones during your periods or when you have reached menopause. Acne may also occur if you have started or stopped taking birth control pills abruptly.
  3. Family history: If other people in the family are prone to acne, then you may be genetically predisposed to it.
  4. Medications: There are certain medications which can cause acne to flare up. They contain chemicals that stimulate hormones in the body thus, resulting in acne.
  5. Skin products: If you have oily skin, then using products that contain oil may aggravate acne. They may also contain chemicals which may clog pores in your skin.

Symptoms of acne in adults are often seen as bumps on the skin, blisters filled with pus and inflamed black heads. Apart from these some people also witness hard and painful lumps beneath the skin.

Prevention:

  1. Stay away from junk food: Avoid eating junk food and fried foods as they can aggravate oiliness in the skin and result in pimples. Rather, replace them with natural foods and other complex carbs.
  2. Drink plenty of water:  Drink plenty of water as it helps in filtering out the waste products and toxins from your body.
  3. Avoid smoking: Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow and thus, limits blood circulation in the body. This may cause multiple complications in your skin, acne being one of them.

If you wish to discuss about any specific skin problem, you can consult a specilized dermatologist and ask a free question.

I am 26 years male, am having lipoma skin disease, day by day its increasing on the body like hand, legs, how to reduce and is there any natural cure please let me know.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Being a homoeopath I will suggest you to go for homoeoapthic treatment if these are increasing on regular basis or are painful. In allopathic system there is only surgical removal but the question is how many surgeries one should undergo as these are multiple in number. So I will recommend you to go for homoeopathic medicine. Consult me with full history of your problem.----------------------------- Home Treatment to Cure Lipomas------------- Apple Cider Vinegar----------- A popular home remedy is to take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before going to bed. After a couple of weeks many report that their lipomas’ have shrunken in size.------- Tumeric---------- Some of the most effective herbal treatments of lipomas include the herb Tumeric or Circumin. Experts believe that in a powdered form turmeric mixed with olive oil has dramatic healing properties. By applying this herbal mixture to the fatty lumps the appearance of the lipoma’s is said to soften and even reduce in size. Keep in mind that turmeric’s yellow coloring will cause a yellow dyeing of skin and clothing, so if you want to avoid this effect on clothes, cover the paste with a bandage.------------ Thuja Occidentalis---------- Thuja is a member of the cedar family that is used to treats growths both on and under your skin and can be used to treat lipoma. Mix thuja extract with water and apply to the area over the lipoma two to three times daily.----------------------- The above 3 Home procedures do not gurantee to cure lipomas 100% but you can try these procedure at home as these techniques have (unconfirmed reports) helped in one way or the other in curing or reducing size of lipomas but Homoeopathy is the only best way to get rid of lipomas without any side effect or adverse reaction on your body while using these homoeopathic medicines-------------------------

I am suffering from under eye dark circles, for lst two years and from 2,3 months it become darker what should I do, please give any solution to reduce it.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hello Lybrate user Dark discolouration of the skin under the eye is mainly referred to as dark circles. It is also known as dark rings or shadows. Causes of dark circles are heredity, aging, dry skin, prolonged crying, working for long hours in front of a computer, mental or physical stress, lack of sleep and an unhealthy diet. Both men and women of different age groups can have dark circles. Remedies 1. Before going to bed, apply a little almond oil over the dark circles and gently massage it into the skin. 2. Apply gram flour with tomato juice. 3. Apply raw potato juice alternately. 4. Start a few eye excercises. 5. Make it a habit of drinking tomato juice with some pudina /indian-herbs or mint leaves, lemon juice and salt. 6. Always use sunglasses when going out in sun to protect the eyes from the harmful rays. 7. Make a paste of turmeric powder and pineapple juice. Apply it on the dark circles. 8. Apply Cucumber gel at bedtime Additional Precautions 1. Get adequate sleep and rest. 2. Avoid rubbing your eyes too much or too often, as it causes the blood vessels to dilate, thus making the under eye appear darker. 3. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to get rid of water retention that could be a cause of the problem. 4. Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E.

There can be various reasons, lack of sleep/nutrition or stress. It can also be hereditary. If it is hereditary, it requires proper treatment like laser etc. If not, put cold cucumber slices for 20 minutes everyday in your free time in your eyes and relax. Use an undereye cream or serum before sleeping. If these do not work, go for a clinical treatment like microdermabrasion or chemical peeling.

Hi lybrate-user, there are plenty of treatments. The most commonly used for fair and glowing skin is glutathione. You would ideally require oral and iv treatments both together. These iv treatment are through a drip for 8 weeks which would be 1 session a week.

Atopic Dermatitis and Tips to Deal with It

MBBS, MD - Dermatology
Dermatologist, Delhi
Atopic Dermatitis and Tips to Deal with It

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease that most commonly affects children during their first year of life. This is also commonly noted in older children and occasionally in adults. This disease causes severe itching that many a times leads to skin infection. These rashes are commonly seen over the scalp, neck, cheeks and face. As the child grows older and also in adults, the rashes mainly appear in body creases and folds.

Aetiology

The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is still under research, but it is believed that people with the following are at risk of getting atopic dermatitis

  1. People with asthma or hay fever

  2. Living in cities and in cold climate

  3. Family history of dermatitis

Dermatitis is not caused by food allergies, but people with dermatitis are allergic to certain type of food like milk and other dairy products, shellfish and nuts.

Symptoms

  1. Dry itchy and scaly skin

  2. Redness and rashes

  3. Scratching and itching

  4. Appears bumpy and develop knots in thickened areas

Treatment

It’s important to visit the dermatologist for treatment to control the disease and prevent it from worsening. Treatment includes medicines to control itching, reduce skin inflammation (redness and swelling) and clear infection

Prevent Relapse

The dermatologist will also suggest lifestyle modifications, which are very important to manage the disease.

Tips for people with Dermatitis

1. Ways to ease discomfort:

  • Make sure the humidity and temperature levels are comfortable.

  • Apply moisturizer twice daily to make sure the skin does not get dry and cracks.

  • Enquire your doctor about how to use wet wrap therapy and its effects.

  • Make sure your child’s finger nails are cut short and smooth.

2. Bathing care:

  • Bath your child with warm water not with hot water and make sure you complete the bath within 5-10 mins.

  • Just pat the skin after bath with soft cotton towels and don’t make it dry completely.

  • Apply the medicine if advised after bath. Make sure you apply the medicine before the skin gets completely dry.

  • Apply moisturizer over the medicated skin.

  • Avoid bubble bath and prefer bleach bath every two days if the skin gets infected.

3. Wash clothes the right way:

  • Uses limited amount of detergents to wash the clothes.

  • Rinse the clothes with adequate amount of water and dry it completely under direct sunlight.

  • Wash new clothes with plain water before wearing to your child to remove excess dyes and fragrances.
