How Toothache and Headache Are Related?

How Toothache and Headache Are Related?

One of the main reasons of a severe headache is a prolonged toothache. Toothaches are extremely painful and can prevent you from enjoying your food. It becomes difficult to speak if toothache is unbearable.

Causes of Toothache:

  1. Tooth decay.

  2. Tooth fracture resulting from an accident.

  3. A painful infection at the root of your teeth or your gums. This is known as tooth abscess.

  4. Chewing gum continuously and grinding the teeth.

How does toothache cause headache?

Sometimes, a tooth becomes very inflamed and since the nerve endings are connected to the brain, this, in turn makes the pain travel to different parts of your head. Generally, people with bad cavities or caries have major headaches and migraines.

The inside of a tooth consists of a pulp. This pulp can get infected. If this tooth happens to lie in the upper jaw, then the pain is transferred to the head which can cause a severe headache.

Headaches can also be caused by TMJD (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction). This usually occurs spreading from the face, jawline and neck right up to the head. In extreme cases, the jaws might be locked up and it makes clicking or grinding noises. Misalignment of the teeth can be a cause by TMJD which in turn affects the head greatly.

Treatments:

  1. If you are detected with TMJD, your jaws need to be healed, first thing you should do is to visit an expert dentist in order to get the underlying cause of toothache treated. It is always recommended to get a proper treatment started, do not emphasize the use of self-medications.
  2. If the headache persists due to toothache, it is advisable to take a painkiller as prescribed by your dentist.
  3. Use an ice pack or a towel dipped in cold icy water, and hold it against the area of toothache. Do not put ice directly on your tooth as it might increase the pain ten folds due to tooth sensitivity.
  4. You can also apply numbing gel so that your tooth stops hurting. This in turn, will make your headache reduce.
  5. Toothache is also caused by small amounts of food which get stuck inside your teeth or between your gums, so it is necessary to clean your teeth thoroughly and floss it regularly to avoid toothache.
  6. Avoid chocolates and sweets. If you still get a cavity, you should visit your dentist immediately.
  7. Dental abscess also causes headache. In this situation, a root canal treatment is recommended.

Tip to keep the teeth whiter

Munching foods like apples, pears, carrots or celery after brushing can help in preventing discoloration as they trigger tooth-bathing saliva which helps in keeping the teeth whiter.

- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

Preserving the tooth by root canal treatment is always better than removing the tooth. Nothing can substitute our natural teeth. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

I am 25 year old and having gum bleeding since last 05 years . It bleeds when brush also. Please suggest me treatment. There is black spots also appears since one year

Hello Thanks for the Query Bleeding Gums are usually because of accumulation of plaque and tartar on tooth surfaces. If It's only Gingivitis than you need to undergo Scaling and root planning(Professional teeth cleaning) If it's phyorrea you need to undergo scaling as well as flap procedure depending upon the condition. For thet same Visit a Periodontist(GumSpecalist) He can help you better in this case. And do change your brushing technique as faulty/wrong technique leads to accumulation of plaque and tartar Thank you Dr.Aman Bhatia

Sir, myself 28 years old use to have gutka in high number and don't know something has stuck in my mouth from 5 days and I am not able to remove it I have consulted ent doctor but he is telling that he can't see any thing in my mouth and cover give me some medicine of vitamins. But I'm still facing the problem tell me what should I go to remove that object from mouth. Please help me.

BDS, MDS
Dentist, Gorakhpur
It seems that gutkha is forcefully embedded into the deeper areas of your gums or there may be some hidden cavities in between teeth. Visit a dentist for cleaning and finding the real cause. He/ she will also access the present condition of damage caused by frequent gutkha chewing (Oral submucous fibrosis). Quit chewing gutkha now else your oral and general health problem will be magnified.

Start brushing twice daily with either colgate pro sensitive or sensodyne toothpaste using soft bristle brush. The result will be felt within a month. Still get your teeth x-rayed to rule out any decay.

Smokers breath / bad breath is due the nicotine and tartar accumulated on the teeth. The best remedy is to get your teeth cleaned and polished to eliminate any tartar and the associated gum inflamation which causes the bad breath. Stopping smoking is the best remedy, but if you do not then a cleaning every 8 months will help periodically remove the nicotene and the tartar. This will keeps the gums healthy and the bad breath will be greatly reduced.
