Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally. The first thing you should do is to eat foods that are high in fiber, This is because fiber rich foods absorb uric acid from the blood. Your kidneys then 'throw' out the excess uric acid. Try to eat Oatmeal, Spinach, cauliflowers and Isabgol in milk if possible.  Please use olive oil to cook your food. Kindly avoid vegetable oils because they become unhealthy when heated twice. This leads to rancid fat in the body. These destroy vitamin E, that in turn controls uric acid levels. Olive oil also curbs uric acid by itself.  Vitamin C chewable tablets taken 500 mg daily lower uric acid levels within 4 to 8 weeks.  Try to stop intake of sweets, cakes and pastries. Saturated fats are bad for you.  Many fruits have got potent anti-oxidant properties, like celery seeds, grapes and tomatoes, and these prevent harmful toxins from attacking your organs - releasing uric acid.

Hello, looking at your height and weight your bmi is 27.03 kgs / m2 (normal <23 kgs/m2), which means you are over weight. Your ideal body weight. To get bmi 23 kgs, weight should be down to 71 kgs. This will help in becoming more healthy as well as in controlling all the lipids. Uric acid 8.2 mg is high, that could be the reason for joint pain. To reduce uric acid you will have avoid red meat, organ meat, certain fishes like herring, sardines, salmon, haddock, scallops and mushrooms, mussels. Also avoid alcohol and sweetened aerated drinks. Overall caloric intake also should be matching the ideal body weight (71 x 25 cals = 1775 cals. Plus a daily exercise of over 1 hour is a must. Thanks.

PCOS: What You Need to Know About It

MBBS, DGO, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)

PCOS: What You Need to Know About It

PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder in women, in which the female hormones, progesterone and estrogen, are imbalanced. This imbalance leads to the formation of cysts (benign masses) in the ovaries. PCOS tends to affect your heart functions, fertility, menstrual cycle and appearance.

There are certain symptoms, which can be indicative of PCOS; these symptoms tend to begin as a woman's menstrual cycle starts. In certain cases, however, PCOS may also affect a woman in her mid age. PCOS can also cause excessive hair growth in unwanted places like above the upper lip, chin, arms and chest like a male.

The symptoms are:

  • Increase in the production of male hormone, leads to development of male characteristics
  • The size of the breasts may reduce
  • The tone and the texture of the voice may change and become similar to a man's voice
  • Hair may start to fall
  • You may suffer from acne and pimple breakouts on your face
  • It can lead to sudden weight gain
  • It may affect a woman's fertility
  • It may lead to pain in the pelvis

Other symptoms: Apart from these symptoms, a woman may also experience other health complications such as high levels of bad cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Causes: The causes of PCOS are not well known, however, the likely causes are genetics and hormonal complications. If someone in the family has PCOS, then the risk of being affected by PCOS rises significantly. The other likely cause is the overproduction of the male hormone androgen in the female body. Although androgen is a male hormone, the female body also produces it in trace amounts. However, in some cases, when it is overproduced, it might impair the ovulation process.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Once the condition is diagnosed, there are certain treatments, which are recommended for the patient. The condition in itself does not have a cure, but the symptoms can only be controlled. Medications to control the androgen levels in the female body may be administered if you have androgen hormone complication. A balanced diet and an exercise regimen can be chalked out to control body weight and regulate blood sugar levels. If PCOS leads to ovulation problems, then medications to facilitate ovulation may be advised.

I am from mumbai and require to ask one query about my dad. My dad have got a paralytic attack on his back head and even he is suffering from sponderlysis. He is not able to walk precisely and not able to live a life like common man as he is completely loosed his confidence level. Can you help me

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. By paralytic attack, do you mean cva or some clot in brain types? I will advise seeing his condition to consult a neurophysician, some medications for strengthening like vitamin b12 supplementation and one for brain can be given but mainstay will be intensive physical therapy under supervision of a trained physiotherapist. Adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation to maintain bone strength should also be given because he is not mobilizing much which may make his bones osteoporotic. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Accidentally a used blood sugar checking needle stuck in my finger .does it cause any harm to me. What should I do?

Accidentally a used blood sugar checking needle stuck in my finger .does it cause any harm to me. What should I do?
Sorry to hear that. Was it used by you prior or someone else? Needle stick injuries are most likely related to three things. Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV. Though the transmission rates are low with needle stick injuries it is safer to get yourself tested for these. So I would recommend Hep B antigen, Hep C antibody and HIV testing to be done and repeated after few weeks. Hope this helps.

Try to stay busy doing activities that engage you in other ways besides masturbation. Sublimate by doing things like writing, painting, drawing, playing a musical instrument, or playing sports. Eat healthy and try to cultivate some kind of skill that gives you pleasure and focuses your brain 2- do not watch pron movies. 3- take nutritious and healthy diet 4- avoid fast food, spicy, and oily food. 5- may take ayurvedic medicine for strengthening your sexual strength to a grater level. 6- do abdominal crunches, leg raises ,push ups 20 nos each and yoga. 7- add up salad as staple in your food.
