Hi. My daughter is having sinusitis. Please give me some opinion to get rid of this.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses caused by virus, bacteria, fungus, allergy or an autoimmune reaction. Although uncomfortable and in some cases painful, it will often right itself without the need for medical intervention. Sinuses are hollow spaces behind the bones of your face. There are four pairs of sinuses. Allergies can cause sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis can last more than 12 weeks. Symptoms can include loss of sense of smell, halitosis and toothache. Home treatments such as steam inhalation can help the symptoms. If symptoms are particularly persistent, antibiotics may be prescribed. There are a number of reasons sinusitis can occur, including viral and bacterial infections. Doctors often refer to sinusitis as rhinosinusitis.

Asthma: How To Deal With It?

DTCD (TDD), C-HIV
Pulmonologist, Pune
Asthma: How To Deal With It?

Asthma is an inflammatory disease, which affects the airways of your lungs (respiratory tract that pumps oxygen into the lungs). It is long term in nature. It is characterized by shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. It occurs few times a day or few times a week depending on the person it affects. Sometimes it worsens during the night.

What triggers Asthma?

  1. Airborne particles such as dust mites, mold spores, pollen and cockroach waste.
  2. Infections in the respiratory system such as common cold.
  3. Cold air can also trigger asthma.
  4. Physical or outdoor activities which make you pant such as running, skipping, jogging and jumping can cause shortness of breath, thus triggering asthma.
  5. Pollutants and irritants in air such as smoke.
  6. Some medications can also trigger asthma.
  7. Stress and nervous attacks (panic attacks) also trigger asthma.

How to manage asthma better by changing your lifestyle:

  1. Try to avoid keeping animals in your house such as dogs, cats and rabbits. Many times animal fur, waste, urine and saliva contains particles which can cause allergic reactions and make you cough uncontrollably. This in turn triggers asthma attacks. If you have pets try keeping them away from your bedroom.
  2. Dust mites also cause allergies which trigger asthma. So wash your carpets, rugs, bed-linen and pillowcases in hot water.
  3. Bugs and insects such as cockroaches are not only unhygienic, but can also trigger asthma. Cockroach droppings near your bed, kitchen and food are dangerous and you should call an exterminator to get rid of these bugs.
  4. Sometimes, heavy fragrance also aggravates your respiratory tract and triggers shortness of breath. Avoid using heavy perfumes, deodorants and room fresheners.
  5. Pollution also triggers asthma. Dust particles come out from the vehicles and mix with the air. If this air is inhaled, it might trigger uncontrollable asthma. So try to cover your mouth with a cloth when you step out of your house.

Asthma can be very severe and can bring many hurdles in your day to day activities. Changing your lifestyle and certain habits can reduce asthma to a great extent. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pulmonologist.

Hi. I can understand your concern. It must be a viral infection try stem inhalation and warm salt water gargling. Also drink lots of fluids. Take fruits rich in vitamin c like mausambi, orange etc which will help you come over the infection faster. If cough is still persistent you will need a chest x ray and detailed evaluation. Don't worry, you will be alright. Hope I have solved your query. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Tonsillitis

MBBS, MS - ENT, DNB
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Tonsillitis

Tonsils are the two oval-shaped tissue pads at the back of your throat, which function as a mechanism to protect you from diseases. Any infection of the tonsils is referred to as ‘tonsillitis’.

You can suffer from tonsillitis at any age, but it is more commonly diagnosed in children. Tonsillitis is highly contagious.

There are two types of tonsillitis:

  1. Chronic tonsillitis— Longer episodes of acute tonsillitis
  2. Recurrent tonsillitis— Recurrent episodes of tonsillitis in a year

Causes

Tonsillitis can cause viral and bacterial infections. The ‘Streptococcus (strep) bacteria’ is a common cause. Some other causes include:

  1. Adenoviruses
  2. Influenza virus
  3. Epstein-Barr virus
  4. Parainfluenza virus
  5. Enteroviruses
  6. Herpes simplex virus

Symptoms

Since tonsillitis has various causes, symptoms too tend to differ. Some symptoms include:

  1. An extremely sore throat
  2. Painful or difficult swallowing
  3. Scratchy-sounding voice
  4. Bad breath
  5. Fever
  6. Chills
  7. Earaches
  8. Stomach aches
  9. Headaches
  10. Stiff neck
  11. Neck and jaw tenderness due to inflamed lymph nodes
  12. Tonsils that become swollen and red in colour
  13. Yellow or white spots on the tonsils

In children, symptoms such as excessive drooling, increased irritability or poor appetite are usually noticeable.

Treatment

If the tonsillitis is mild, especially caused by a virus, it usually doesn’t require any treatment. More critical cases of tonsillitis might require treatments such as tonsillectomy (a surgical process used to remove the tonsils) or administration of antibiotics.

Penicillin is the most commonly administered antibiotic. Once commonly performed, tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils) is now reserved for extremely critical cases. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an ent-specialist.

Cough and cold have no relation with pimples or acne. Acne occurs only to those who are having an oily skin. Keep your face free from oil. Use a face wash containing salycylic acid like ahaglow s face wash. Topical benzoyl peroxide and clindamycing helps in curing but should be applied only after a dermatologists prescription. Regards.
