Hi I want to ask about my husband's LDL cholesterol. When we checked in March it was 600 mg/dl. So doctor prescribed tablet called crestor (10 mg. Then after 3 months we repeated the test it was 420 mg/dl. So we stopped the medicine and tried home remedies and ayurvedic drug called arjunarishta. Yesterday we repeated the test it is 915 mg/dl. Can you please suggest the medicine and proper diet? His age is 32 years. Weight 80. Height 5 feet 7 inches. And what fruits can be taken please help me out. As I have heard it leads to heart attack. Please please help me out. Thanks.

Hi
I want to ask about my husband's LDL cholesterol. When we checked in March it was 600 mg/dl. So doctor prescribed ...
If LDL cholesterol has been as high as you have mentioned and it is now 900 mg/dl then you need to understand a few things - 1) In indian scenario safe limit of LDL is 110 mg/dl or less a value more than this increases the risk of heart attack and the higher it gets the higher the risk. 2) This value is too high and according to the weight and height you have mentioned he is overweight also, so your husband's full lipid profile as well as medical work up should be done to understand why is he having such a high value. So please consult a cardiologist for tests like ecg, echo, liver function test, Kidney function test, TMT etc risk factor evaluation etc and starting of treatment 3) The dose of crestor given in march was inadequate for such a high LDL value. Maximum dose should have been started. And you should start it now without any delay. 4) In addition to medicines You should also begin with lifestyle changes like - eating a healthy diet both for weight loss and cholesterol control (Take a dietician consult for a diet chart), daily brisk walking, start slowly and increase to 40-45 mins per day, quit smoking and alcohol. But it is very important that you get your husband evaluated and treatment started by a cardiologist as early as possible. So please don't delay in seeking medical help and treatment. Take care.

Try to restrict the intake of salt alongwith increased intake of fruits and vegetables and daily exercise. You can try alternative medicine for a couple of months. If nothing works then I am sorry to say, but you have to take medicine otherwise there may be harmful effects to your vital organs like heart, brain and kidney.

How to reduce ldl & vldl from blood and what is the cause of these bad cholesterols.?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
How to reduce ldl & vldl from blood and what is the cause of these bad cholesterols.?
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, a cause of heart attacks, and reducing blood lipid levels lowers the cardiovascular risk.4 High levels of LDL lead to a build-up of cholesterol in the arteries, whereas HDL carries cholesterol to the liver for removal from the body.2 A build-up of cholesterol is part of the process that narrows arteries, called atherosclerosis, in which plaques form and cause restriction of blood flow.2 High cholesterol levels are a result of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Two major risk factors, diet and exercise, are highly modifiable, meaning that something can be done to change these risk factors and reduce the likelihood of having high cholesterol.2 Limiting intake of fat in the diet helps manage cholesterol levels. In particular, it is helpful to limit foods that contain:2 Food sources of cholesterol Meat, cheese and egg yolks are sources of cholesterol. Cholesterol (from animal foods, such as egg yolks, meat and cheese) Saturated fat (found in some meats, dairy products, chocolate, baked goods, and deep-fried and processed foods) Trans fat (found in some fried and processed foods). Being overweight or obese can also lead to higher blood LDL levels, with regular exercise helpful in managing this risk factor.2 The primary causes of high cholesterol are genetic - very high LDL levels are found in the inherited condition familial hypercholesterolemia.5 Abnormal cholesterol levels may also be secondary to the following:5,6 Diabetes Liver or kidney disease Polycystic ovary syndrome Pregnancy and other conditions that increase levels of female hormones Underactive thyroid gland. Drugs that increase LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol (progestins, anabolic steroids and corticosteroids).
