Dear Antony. Delay in speech is a developmental disorder. Speech delay is considered normal upto an age of 3 years. I suggest you to consult a child specialist and then a speech language therapist for further investigation and treatment. Take care.

My son is now 5 yrs old. But he has problem of constipation also he is not go to toilet daily

MD
Pediatrician, Secunderabad
Mention weight and height. If stool consistency and not the frequency is important in labeling patient to be constipated. If consistency is normal : by and large there is nothing serious. But do consult a doctor. It is not ethical to advice without examining a patient

My child aged 16. He is not interested in study and not in play. He is very lazy. He don't like to following to any one. He don't has any hobby and not goal for his future.

Pediatrician, Pune
if he does not like to follow , let him lead , let him take his own decisions , that will make him more interested and responsible , talk to him as a friend , not as a father

My 4 month old baby girl is doing greenish stool with mucus and sometimes bubbly stool. Its nw a month and have consulted 2 doctors nd given medicines bt I dnt see any improvemnt. I dnt want to give any more antibiotics to such a small child. Please give me some advice.

Pediatrician, Pune
If any new food is added, babies tend to have greenish stools, avoid janam gutti, gripe water, continue with breast feeds, if the baby is otherwise ok, medicines may not be required, it may be transitional stools and will be ok in due course of time.

My daughter 3 months old and she is suffering from lice in hair. Please suggest the best brand hair oil to prevent from lice?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Lice in 3 months baby is unlikely. If it is, she must have contracted lice from family member most likely from mother. Even then I suggest to consult doctor to confirm it and proper treatment.

My 4 1/2 month old baby is not going motion for 10 days. I have started giving dates, carrot soup for him after fourth month. He has motion problem from third month itself. What should I do? suggest me some home remedies.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Have you tested his tft? if not do it and send me the report. If you give semi solids in addition to breast milk then you must give boiled water in between fed with cup and spoon never give bottle feed, no matter however you sterilise it. As you are already giving carrot and dates you can try giving mashed banana (small plantain like robusta). If there is no relief inform me privately > I can suggest safe natural drugs with no side effects. Must tell his weight.

Bottle Feeding

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health

Bottle Feeding

Health considerations when bottle-feeding

If you decide not to breastfeed, or are unable to breastfeed, commercial iron-fortified formulas can give your baby the nutrition he or she needs. Infant formulas have the right amounts of protein, calories, fat, vitamins, and minerals for growth. However, formula does not contain the immune factors that are in breastmilk. The immune factors in breastmilk help prevent infections and other health conditions throughout a baby's life.

Picture of a baby feeding himself a bottle

Infants who take enough iron-fortified infant formula usually don’t need vitamin and mineral supplements. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends vitamin D supplementation for all babies drinking formula until they are drinking at least 32 ounces a day. Fluoride supplements are recommended for babies whose primary water supply is not fluoridated. Check with your baby's healthcare provider about vitamin D and fluoride supplements.

Types of infant formula

  • Cow's milk-based formula. Most infants should be able to tolerate a standard cow's milk formula. Cow's milk formulas are modified to be closer to human milk. These formulas have lactose as the carbohydrate (sugar) source. They are available in ready-to-feed cans, liquid concentrate, and powder. Regular cow's milk is not an appropriate source of nutrition for a human baby.

  • Soy-based or lactose-free formulas. These formulas are used if an infant can’t tolerate lactose, which is rarely a significant problem in babies. They don’t contain lactose as the sugar source. As many as 50% of all infants who are allergic to cow's milk formula will also be allergic to soy-based formulas. Talk with your baby's healthcare provider before changing formulas. Vegetarian parents may prefer soy-based formulas. But they should be aware that breastfeeding is still the best option.

  • Specialized formulas. There are special formulas for babies who are premature or who have certain rare disorders or diseases. These formulas may have special directions for use. They are prescribed by the baby's healthcare provider.

  • Hydrolyzed formulas. Hydrolyzed formulas are easier to digest. They may be used in babies at risk for allergies. They are more expensive than regular formulas. Talk with your baby's healthcare provider before using these formulas.

  • Low iron formulas. These formulas are not recommended.

Helpful hints for feeding your baby

  • Breastmilk only is the ideal feeding for at least 6 months. This means no water, sugar water, or formula.

  • Wait until breastfeeding is well established before giving your baby breastmilk in a bottle.

  • Working mothers can use a breast pump on break time and refrigerate or freeze the milk for later use as a bottle-feeding. Refrigerated breastmilk should be used within 24 hours after pumping. Frozen breastmilk is good for several months in the freezer. Fathers and other family members can be involved in feeding time if breastmilk is offered from a bottle occasionally.

  • Offer cow's milk-based formula with iron as first choice of formula if not breastfeeding.

  • Keep your baby on breastmilk or baby formula until he or she is 1 year old. After this time, you may switch to whole milk. Children under 2 years old should not drink skim or low-fat milk.

  • It’s important to follow the formula preparation directions exactly as directed on the packaging. Using too much water can result in poor weight gain. It's also important to discuss your water supply with your child's healthcare provider. In some areas, water must be boiled first, or bottled water should be used.

  • Bottles should never be propped up.

  • Babies should never be put to sleep with a bottle. This can cause cavities to develop.

  • All babies, whether breast or bottle fed, should be offered a feeding whenever they show signs of hunger.

My two year old daughter has lack of immunity. She very often falls sick. She gets fever two or three times in a month. Everybody says chawanprash will increase immunity. Is it true? Can I give my two year old daughter chawanprash for immunity?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Chyavanprash safe herbal product and can be given. Your daughter falling sick is not always due to lack of immunity as you think. I need more details to give a concrete answer.

Mera beta 8sal ka hai usko bhut headache hota hai morning 5: 00 am start hota hai whole day rehta hai. Usko specs bhi lg gaye .but phir bhi usko pain hota hai. Sb test normal hai. Please tell me he suffering from one month.

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology, Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery
Ophthalmologist, Bikaner
Get a dilated refraction done by an ophthalmologist. Two important things which shouldn't be missed is your child's correct glass power (which maybe a plus number) and a thorough fundus examination to look for any other positive findings for headache. Thanks.
