When you quit smoking you will put on weight. You need to try again and again until you succeed. It is really good that you want to stop smoking because it is really very harmful. Just the fact that you want to give up smoking is a good starting point. The habit can be very difficult to halt because of the many conditions attached to smoking. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. All the damage you incurred earlier because of the smoking can be reverted back to normal in quick time.

Psychosis may occur as a result of a psychiatric illness like schizophrenia. In other instances, it may be caused by a health condition, medications, or drug use. Possible symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, talking incoherently and agitation. The person with the condition usually isn't aware of his or her behaviour. Treatment may include medication and talk therapy.

If you want better results while studying, revision is the key. Repeated revision consolidates the information in the brain and helps to retain the information. Other than that, try a daily exercise of recalling your entire day in as much detail as possible before you sleep. Initially only important or superficial details are recalled, but with practice minor details can also be recalled. Be more organized; make lists. Use acronyms and mnemonic devices to help you remember. Take 45 minute slots followed by a 5-15 minute break. Eat and at proper times. Drink plenty of water. Find time for exercise or meditation. Keep time for proper revision at end of study session. Revise before you sleep.

Dear lybrate user, you both need to learn effective communication skills. The most important aspect is to" listen" to what the other person is saying and also learn how to express your own" feelings" you probably have lots of suppressed anger. And it appears to me that, you have seen people expressing anger aggressively. You will have to understand first, what is making you so angry. Then you will have to look into your perceptions and may be modify them. You can also learn anger management techniques and also learn how to express your feelings without hurting other people. You and your partner, may take an appointment with a counsellor who will help you in sorting out your couple issues. The counsellor will not judge you or blame you hence you can be open with the counsellor. Once you are able express your feelings and needs to your partner, the quality of your relation will improve and you will be able to enjoy life. All the best.

My brother is 36. He is depressed since childhood as our father is an alcoholic. He is not willing to see any doctor or psychologist for the unhappiness and anger that he carries. Is there a way that I can help him without his knowing of it.

Speak to him about your father, raise the topic so that he starts talking about it. This will facilitate ventilation of suppressed anger and improve his condition. But you must not raise the topic, talk for couple of minutes and leave. That will leave him angry and irritable without beneficial effects. You need to carry the discussion for 30-40 minutes on each instance. Many such instances may be needed. The end of a typical session is signalled when the intensity of his outburst has significantly reduced. Initially he may be resistant, but gradually he will improve. Take care!

Hi, Some people can have serious problems trying to communicate with peers that are associated with feelings of anxiety or fear. If this is something you deal with, you may have a social phobia, also called social anxiety disorder. There are many steps you can take to help you deal more effectively with day to day interactions. Social anxiety disorder can cause you to think negative thoughts about yourself when faced with a social situation. You may think" I'll look like a fool" or" I'm going to humiliate myself. The first step to overcoming them is to identify the thoughts when they pop into you head. Knowing what is causing social phobia can help you overcome it. Stop yourself when you think these thoughts and say" No, I will not look like a fool. I am strong and competent and I'm going to get through this. After you have confronted and identified the thoughts, analyze the fear. Try to overwrite the negative thoughts in your brain with positive, realistic ones. Ask yourself questions about your negative thoughts. For example, ask" Do I know I'm going to humiliate myself" or" How do I know I'm going to blow my presentation? Then ask yourself" Will it be the end of the world if I mess up? The logical answers to the questions are: more than likely, you will not humiliate yourself or mess up. Even if you do mess up, you are human, as is everyone watching you. Even professionals mess up. Often times social fears can be a result of thinking that everyone around you is passing judgment on you. If so, take a step back, and realize that most people aren't focused on you. If they are focused on you, they are not thinking the same negative thoughts as you are. Don't try to read people's minds. You can't know what people are thinking. Plus, they do not see the same negative self that you see in your mind. Use social situations to practice changing negative thoughts about yourself, and practice stopping and altering your thoughts about judgement from others What you can do is Change your focus. One of the ways to help reduce your anxiety is to take the focus off of yourself in social situations. Try to pay attention to your surroundings, the conversation, and connecting with the people around you. Begin to understand that although you are focused with how others will think of you, everyone else is not as focused on you. If you say or do something embarrassing, others may not even notice. Or if they do, they will quickly forget it. Try to focus on other things when you notice your physical symptoms in social situations. You are not being as obvious as you think. It is very rare that others can notice physical symptoms of anxiety or even panic attacks. Instead notice your experience of the event, such as music you hear, how each bite of food tastes, or other entertainment such as art or dancing. Most people are just as nervous in social situations as you are. They are too busy focused on themselves Make observable goals for yourself. Getting over your social anxiety may seem like a nebulous process. How do you know if you are getting better? Just putting yourself in social situations isn't enough. That might be step 1, but after that, you need to work on interacting more. Make goals for yourself for each social outing. As you accomplish your goals, you can start to see progress and improvement in yourself. Make small talk with people you see often, such as employees, schoolmates, or other people that you come in contact with. This may be just a comment on the weather, your homework or work project, or the meeting you had earlier. Start by giving yourself a goal of speaking to one person once a week. Then increase it to every day, or speaking to multiple people in one day. Make a goal to make one comment in class or in your meeting. Don't worry about what everyone else thinks. Focus on the fact that you did it. That is progress. If you are in a group setting, make a pact with yourself to say at least 3 comments in the conversation. Ask someone to dinner. It can be as a friend or as a date. Don't focus on the response - only focus on the fact that you were assertive and asked. This helps you focus on the task and the goal, not the nerves. The idea here is to get control of the situation. You know you can control what you do, what you say, and what you ask. You can't control the other person, so don't worry about them. You can even try practicing with a friend at home what you’ll do or say in social situations. Practice deep breathing. Deep breathing can be a great way to manage anxiety during or before social situations. Deep breathing can help reduce the physical symptoms of your anxiety, many of which are a result of breathing too quickly. Do breathing exercises everyday so it becomes second nature and comes naturally when you're in a stressful situation. Breathe through your abdomen, not your chest. To do this, lay on the floor or sit straight in a chair. Place a hand on your chest, the other on your abdomen. As you inhale, the hand on your abdomen should move while the one on your chest stays mostly at the same place. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose. Hold for a count of 7. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. Gently contract your abdominal muscles to get all the air from the lungs. This is extremely important. Complete 5 deep breaths. Try 1 deep breath per 10 seconds. You will have set backs. This happens to everyone. Don't dwell on failure. Remember, you are learning. Think of ways that you will do better next time. Find people who are right for you. Choose those who make you happiest over those who look popular and cool. Be comfortable. They're just people, and there are over 7 billion of them in the world.

I'm a 19 years old medical student. . I met a guy in my college who was senior to me by 2 yrs. We became best friends. We enjoyed many moments together. He used to give me a lot of importance. We even became physically intimate for 4-5 times. It was okay for me as I thought he loves me , as I love him. Last week when I proposed him, he clearly rejected my proposal saying there is someone else in his life. From that day, he cut all the connection with me. Later he said he doesn't want to keep any connection with me. I'm in deep love with him .I didn't want to lose him ever. As I have already lost him, I can't accept this. I'm in severe mental depression. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't study .I'm feeling like crying all the time. I can't share the feeling with anyone. But my final exams are starting within 7 days. I don't know what to do. I can't concentrate in studies. Please help me out. you can prescribe any medicine if you think it may be helpful. Please help me out. I'll be highly obliged to you through out my life.

Like this same problem one girl medico student comes to me. She is final year in medicine. In study time it happens. Love and sex is common in medical colleges. Take it easy. He wants to you for the purpose of sex. He enjoyed sex later leaved. Then you also take this like that. Do not think this matter again. Exams are crucial. Better to concentrate on studies. My patient recovered very soon and now she concentrated on studies like that you also recover very soon. Next time be careful about boys. Do not give any chance of sex. Make a very good friendly relations and do not go to sex. Ok what is happened is over. Now exams better to concentrate. If possible please share your personal feelings with your close friends. Do not be alone. Feel always comfortable. Be enjoy every movement of life. Do not think and do not waste time. All the best. My best wishes.

Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. You must definitely meet a psychiatrist. Why? For the simple reason that this is a known psychological problem. Part of the problem is that one feels that the threat is real and hence does not recognise the utility of a psychiatric intervention; but the reality is such an intervention is useful and invaluable! Besides these theoretical points, in my own practical experience we have treated a number of such clients. So not only should you not hesitate, rather you must seek help at the earliest to avoid unnecessary prolongation of suffering. Take care!

General Physician,
If you feel excessive sleep or tiredness/ head spinning or vertigo like feeling you have to make sure you have no anaemia or hypothyroidism by doing a blood CBC & TSH and inform me directly 10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings.
