6 Signs you Need a Hearing Test

MS - ENT -, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist
Ask Free Question
Here are 6 signs to watch out for that could indicate 'You need to get your Ears tested':

1. Your TV is blaring: Do you often find people around you shouting above the TV sound complaining that it's too loud? When you find it hard to hear the TV at the average volume and find yourself turning up the sound, this could signify a hearing loss. Doctors are seeing a growing number of patients visiting them after prolonged exposure to loud music and sounds.

2. You find it hard to hear phone conversations: Do you find yourself asking the person on the other end of the phone line to 'repeat' themselves, or find yourself pressing the phone instrument right into your ear? If you are trying so hard to hear, you might find yourself missing out on bits of the conversation as focussing to clearly hear the conversation is exhausting work. Getting a hearing test might be a good option if this sounds like you.

3. You have trouble hearing in noisy environments: When you are out dining with friends or family at a busy restaurant or accompanying a friend shopping in a busy street, all that background noise makes it difficult to hear what the people are saying. People with hearing loss often have problems masking out background noise.

4. Family members telling 'you're going deaf'?: Trust the views of the people closest to you, they never lie about your health. Family members often are the first to sense signs of hearing loss as they find themselves repeating things to you or calling out louder to get your 'attention'.

5. You find yourself staying away from social occasions, family gatherings or avoid being the first to start conversations

6. You find yourself leaning closer to people to follow the conversation or staring at their lips trying to lip-read what's being said.

My Baby is going to be 4 months on 2nd may. He's experiencing motion several times a day, like 7 to 8 times. He does green watery motions. He's suffering this since last 1 week, before that it was normal yellowish once a day. Can you please tell us if it's normal for babies or should I consult to a pediatrician.

Stool colour is rarely important, unless it represents blood. Breast fed 4 month old baby can pass 7-8 motions in a day. However, as you have said that stool frequency has increased only recently, I would suggest you to get your baby evaluated by a paediatrician. Any change in food, introduction of new food item or a new medicine could lead to diarrhoea. Try to offer exclusive breast feeds till your baby is 6 months of age.

I didn't fully understand your [problem .Ask me privately for personalised advice, If it is this as below, Rheum also known as Ground is thin mucus naturally discharged as a watery substance from the eyes, nose or mouth during sleep (cf. mucopurulent discharge). Rheum dries and gathers as a crust in the corners of the eyes or mouth, on the eyelids, or under the nose.It is formed by a combination of mucus (in the case of the eyes, consisting of mucin discharged from the cornea or conjunctiva), nasal mucus, blood cells, skin cells, or dust. Rheum from the eyes is particularly common. Dried rheum is in common usage called sleep .e.g., to have sleep in one's eyes. When the individual is awake, blinking of the eyelid causes rheum to be washed away with tears via the nasolacrimal duct. The absence of this action during sleep, however, results in a small amount of dry rheum accumulating in corners of the eye, most notably in children.Ask me privately for personalised advice. A number of conditions can cause an increase in the production of rheum in the eye. In the case of allergic conjunctivitis, the buildup of rheum can be considerable, many times preventing the sufferer opening the eye upon waking without prior cleansing of the eye area. The presence of pus in an instance of heavy rheum buildup can indicate dry eye or conjunctivitis, among other infections. Occasionally in infants, the tear ducts (that drain the tears) fail to open, resulting in the overflow of tears onto the cheeks (epiphora) and rheum deposition on the surrounding skin. YOu need to give NLD massage for a 7 week old . You can ask privately for personalised reply. Regards

Hello, please give her vit d 60, 000 stat every week for a month. In children calcium balance is important any discrepancy in calcium level leads to cold. We would start a low dose calcium (homoeopathic med) if complaint persist after a month.

First precaution include burping after each feed and holding upright for sometime, second is do demand feeding as overfeeding may be the concern. If continues then see your paediatrician to start medicine for the same to control that possible reflux. Tc.

Diabetes - 6 Natural Remedies that Will Help You Manage it

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that results in higher level of blood sugar in the body. It is assuming epidemic proportions and India has become the new diabetic capital with more than 50 million diabetic people. The main problem with diabetes is that it does not completely go away and there is a whole myriad of issues that it brings along with it. Heart attack, stroke, eyesight problems, delayed wound healing, nerve damage and impotence. Therefore, diabetes and by that we mainly mean blood sugar level has to be managed so that there is a delay in onset of the associated conditions and/or reduced in severity.

Ayurveda refers to diabetes as Prameha (excessive urination) and Madhumeha (sugary urine) and has identified close to 20 forms of the disease. According to Ayurvedic belief, each disease is caused due to imbalance in kapha, pitta, and vata doshas and diabetes is caused by all these, predominantly by kapha. With any stream of medicine, management of diabetes involves two tracks one is lifestyle changes and the second is medications.

Lifestyle changes include the following:

Diet: Reduce the amount of rice, sugar, potato, sweet fruits, maida, deep fried foods, and red meat. Protein-rich foods like lentils, soya, green leafy vegetables and fish should be increased. Diet plan should change to small, frequent meals instead of binge eating.

Exercise: Include 30 minutes of regular exercise into your daily routine if you have a diabetic predisposition.

Others: Avoid smoking and alcohol, ensure sufficient sleep, avoid sleeping during day time, improved foot and eye care, periodically check sugar levels and manage stress levels.

Medication

Ayurveda has a whole lot of home remedies which have proven to be very effective against diabetes:

Jambhul: Eugenia Jambolana whether eaten raw or juice extract has been shown to have beneficial effects in managing sugar levels and cholesterol.

Gymnema sylvestre: Used to manage diabetes for over 2000 years, it reduces sugar cravings and is being touted as the future for diabetes treatment.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia): It has 3 components that give it strong antidiabetic properties. The charantin reduces blood sugar levels; the polypeptide has insulin-like effects; and lectin that again has hypoglycemic effects.

Bel (Aegle marmelos): Also known as wood apple, leaves of the plant are shown to have antidiabetic properties. 5 to 10 leaves can be chewed on a daily basis to help control blood sugar levels.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum): Consuming 10 g of fenugreek seeds soaked in water increases the amount of insulin produced, thereby increasing sugar breakdown.

Neem: Chewing about 4 to 5 leaves in the morning on an empty stomach helps to control blood sugar levels. Alternately, neem leaves powder is available which can be dissolved in water and consumed.

Please consult your doctor again and update him on your son's health. He might change the medicines or reduce the dose. You also have the option of changing your doctor. These medications usually come with many side effects. I suggest that you do your own research, read up and educate yourself and take an informed decision. The health of your son could be because of this medicine or something in his diet or the seasonal changes. Though allopathy medicines bring faster relief, they come with numerous side effects. On the other hand, ayurveda and homeopathy are gentler on the mind and body and fewer side effects and sometimes slow to show improvement. Nevertheless, you are doing a wonderful job as a parent and taking care of your son. Take care.

My child is 17 months old, he has got a vomiting problem. Even if he' s got a normal fever, he vomits several times a day. Even in coughing, he vomits several times a day. In a simple problem like crying, irritation, normal fever, teething problem, runny nose, he vomits several times a day. We diagnose him and medicine works but after few days, again same problem. What may be the reason? how to diagnose him better? is there any problem with his intestines? please advice.

If there is frequent vomiting since birth / early infancy, as you have described he may be having gastroesophageal reflux, if his weight gain is not appropriate for his age ~8-10 kg, he may need evaluation for his recurrent vomiting, a milk scan which detects gastroesophageal reflux, usg abdomen may be the initial investigations to be done to find his cause of recurrent vomiting

My Daughter 19 months old, started high fever for 101 degree two days ago. Consulted Paediatrician and Medication started with P125, Sinarest (both at different time) levolin and Fabilac. But she is getting high fever often with a light shiver, body get high heat but no all over, below abdomen it is chill, it varies in upper body. No Diarrhoea, Vomit (only water) was twice at the time of shiver. Within 2 hours she is normal. PD says it would be there till Friday. But doubt about the high fever but temperature varies, esp head get too high temp and her eyes blinks erratically. Is it a viral fever or anything else.

Generally a viral fever may last upto 4 - 5 days and in rare cases can last upto a week also, keep giving paracetamol evry 4-6 hours so that temperature is under control. If fever goes beyond 4-5 days you can get few blood test done to rule out any bacterial infection, if its bacterial infection, need to start on course of antibiotics which your pd will prescribe accordingly.

How to prepare ubtan for babies and which oil should I use in summer for body massage of 8 month old baby.
Ubtan or dry bengal gram powder is used to remove excessive oil on the body. Depending upon area of your living any locally available and traditionally used oil is good. It should be applied 30 minutes before bathing, not afterwards or before.

Sir/madam my child is 3 months old and has taken following vaccination. Birth- bcg, opv-0, hep-b1 6 week - imovax polio, pentavac, rotarix1 10 week- imovax polio, quadrovax only. Now my concern is whether the vaccination quadrovax be given in place of pentavac as changed in 6 and 10 week. And also the doctor is saying to give rotatek in place of rotarix due to its unavailability, should it possible?

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH

Ask Free Question
Follow your doctor's advice, it is fine. He has appropriately given pentavac at 6 wks and quadrovax at 10 weeks. Difference is because of hepatitis b. It is to be given at birth, 1, 6 months. So your doctor has given 2nd dose of hep b at 6weeks (pentavac contains hep b). At 10 weeks hep b was not given as per schedule (quadrovax doesn't contain hep b) rotateq ok if earlier one not available.

Stop bottle feed and give him high fibre food. To treat constipation laxatives have to be given for at least three months with changes in diet. Most of the time such babies have pain while passing stools. They may be having fissure in ano that is wound at the anus, local anesthetic agent may be added and luke warm water wash of the anal region may be done to relieve of pain.
