9 Foods To Help A Sore Throat

A sore throat is usually caused by a bacterial infection and it usually indicates an onset of cold. It may also indicate strained vocal chords or a strep throat. Eating proper foods can help in easing the symptoms and fight inflammation; thus providing the requisite energy to the body.

The 9 foods which help in treating a sore throat are:

  1. Bananas: These foods are packed with vitamin C that allows you to recover quickly from an illness. They are also relatively soft and easier to swallow which make them a preferred food if you have a sore throat.
  2. Cooked carrots: Carrots contain good amounts of vitamin A; eating them roasted or sauteed is a good way to consume the required nutrients. This vegetable also contains carotenoids in good amounts which are beneficial for the body.
  3. Tea: Tea is usually preferred by people when they have a sore throat. Tea has anti-inflammatory properties, which help in fighting infections in the body. Tea also helps in fighting stress and contributes to increased focus.
  4. Cooked cabbage: Cabbage contains antioxidants along with Sulfur, vitamin K and vitamin C, which helps in fighting infection in the body. It can also relieve symptoms of headache.
  5. Sage: Sage is a herb that has powerful infection fighting properties. Mixing crushed sage with warm water or sprinkling it in your soup can help alleviate symptoms of cold and sore throat.
  6. Honey: Honey is an effective treatment for sore throat because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties. It is recommended to take honey during a sore throat.
  7. Licorice: Licorice is another remedy that can be used to treat sore throat. It has certain properties, which cause a reduction in pain and help in clearing the airways.
  8. Yoghurt: Yoghurt is soft, which makes it easier to gulp down in case of a sore throat. You may even add some fresh fruits to the mix for taste.
  9. Garlic: Garlic has strong antibacterial properties, which help in easing symptoms of sore throat. You may directly chew garlic or add them to your food to gain the maximum benefits.

I am having a problem with my ears I can not voices others I have cleaned my ears many times how can I solve my problem?

I am having a problem with my ears I can not voices others I have cleaned my ears many times how can I solve my problem?
Dear lybrate user, please visit a physician, he/she would examine your ears and advise treatment correctly as its difficult to point out to the exact cause without examining. Common associated conditions may be impacted wax, middle ear infection, damage to ear membrane. Meanwhile, avoid using any object (not even ear bud) to clean your ears.

For a couple of years, I am facing this problem -the problem is --ear particularly left one, gets blocked with wax hearingpower through left year becomes almost zero and to get rid of this I have to rush to a ent specialist for cleaning by a syringe with jet of water. Frequency-4./ 5 months. Is there any way for its complete cure?

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Wax accumulation occurs due to tortuosity of ear canal due to which it gets impacted in the canal and leads to hearing problem. Just keep your ear clean but don't use stick/ear buds to clean it. Consult your doctor when wax is there to get it removed. Don't try yourself. U can use clear wax/wax off/soliwax ear drops.

The ear is made up of three parts that work together to process sounds: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. Part of the inner ear called the cochlea contains tiny hair cells. These hair cells help send sound messages to the brain. But loud noise can damage the hair cells. When this happens, the cochlea can't relay sound messages to the brain as well. Unlike damage to other parts of your body, inner ear damage never heals. Over time, as more and more hair cells get damaged, your hearing will get worse and worse. Noise-induced hearing loss due to earbuds is 100% preventable if you use them in moderation. The louder the volume, the faster hearing loss can happen. Listen to music or play a movie or video game at no more than 60% of the maximum volume. Limit the amount of time you spend with earbuds in your ears to 60 minutes. Here's another trick you can use to find out if your earbuds are at a safe volume: Ask people sitting near you if they can hear your music. If they can, it's a sign that your hearing is being damaged. Turn the volume down until other people can no longer hear it. Hearing loss isn't the only problem that earbuds can cause. Listening to music at a loud volume can make you unaware of what's going on around you. That increases your chances of an accident. If you're running on a bike path, for example, it's hard to hear a cyclist shout, "Heads up! when your music drowns out all other sounds.

Is it safe to use nasal sprays for blocked nose like otrivin, nasivion, meta spray, azeelfo etc Regularly.

MS - ENT, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Otrivin and nasivion are dangerous if used for more than a week. Metaspray is ok coz it's a very small dose of steroid.
