Hi. Sleeping on your back without a pillow to encourage the natural curves along the spine to align properly. Also sleeping on your side with a pillow that is the size of the gap between your shoulder and head to release the strain on the neck. Using too many pillows is not recommended. Regular exercise lubricates the disks of the spine and helps to combat degeneration of the disks. Exercise can help keep your body strong and supple as you age. High-impact exercises such as running should be avoided if you are experiencing any neck pain because the shock of impact can worsen your condition. Light, low-impact exercises such as walking, swimming or aqua aerobics help to support the body. Using a routine of neck stretches and yoga exercises will maintain flexibility and range of motion in the neck and cervical spine. Sit up tall with good posture. Roll the shoulders up and back. Inhale and lift the head up toward the sky. Exhale and drop the head toward the chest. Repeat this movement with your breath 10 to 15 times. Bring the head back to center and drop the right ear toward the right shoulder. Repeat on the left side and continue for 10 to 15 repetitions. Roll the head in circles to the right and then to the left. Drop the right ear toward the right shoulder and press the right hand gently into the left side of the forehead to increase the stretch. Repeat on the other side. Yoga (better do it under supervision and guidance by a qualified yoga-instructor first and do it alone later): Certain yoga postures such as Cobra and Bridge pose help to strengthen and stretch the muscles of the neck. Perform Bridge pose lying on your back with the knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Press the feet into the floor and lift the hips up toward the sky. Clasp the hands underneath the body and straighten the arms. For Cobra pose, start on your stomach. Bring your hands to either side of your chest. Press the hands into the floor and roll the shoulders back. Lift the upper body off of the floor and press the tops of the feet into the floor. Elongate the neck and move the tips of the ears back toward the shoulders.

Menstrual Migraines Treatment

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Advanced Infertility
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Menstrual Migraines Treatment

Menstrual Migraine can be termed as an extremely persistent headache that can happen just before, during or right after menstruation. Often, the feeling of nausea also keeps on lingering. The cause which triggers this type of migraine can be the fluctuating levels of oestrogen that a woman’s body experiences when she is on her periods.

What can be the possible treatment?

  1. Application of ice pack or simply rubbing ice on your forehead can help lessen the pain a bit.

  2. Relaxation exercises can be practiced to reduce the tension of the muscles.

  3. Acupuncture therapy can also be done to improve the headache and it can further aid in relaxation of the muscles.

  4. Over the counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can be taken for immediate relief.

  5. Your doctor can also administer TRIPTAN (specific drugs used to treat the symptoms of migraine which work on the chemical receptors within the brain) if the pain is unbearable.

  6. Do not experiment much with hormonal contraception methods after unsafe sexual intercourse. It just might worsen the pain.

  7. NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) can also be administered, only if they have been prescribed by the doctor, as the harmful effects of those drugs are aplenty.

  8. Magnesium deficiency in the body is one of the most important causes for menstrual migraines. Thus, eating foods rich in magnesium such as dark leafy greens, nuts, whole grains, avocados, bananas, etc. and taking magnesium supplements or vitamins are advisable.

  9. There are certain foods which can even trigger such attacks. They include foods packed with monosodium glutamate (MSG), aged cheese and caffeine. Such foods should be strictly avoided.

Her headaches might be because of tensions. From the symptoms you described, it does not appear to be like migraine. Encourage her to share her worries with you or someone who she can trust. Assure her of your support as well. Tell her that you love her and you care for her. Tell her that when she is worried you also get affected and you both together can find some solutions to your problems. Also ask her to avoid going out in the mornings presently, as it is very hot outside because of summers. Ask her to drink plenty of water. See if she is having her food properly or not. In spite of doing all this, if the headache continues then consult a doctor. Avoid self medication. Take care.

I am 20 year old female and have some facial problems since birth. I can not close my left eyelid and it is always tearing. I cannot smile properly and it is so weird when smile goes to only one side. I can not lift my left eyebrows too. People used to mock me since childhood and it become too stressful to face public. I have lost all my confidence and happiness due to this problem and have searched about this situation. I found my condition is called facial nerve palsy. What should I do to cure this completely. Could this be cured completed. This made my life so pathetic and I am fed up of this. My future, happiness and confidence has been destroyed due to this. What should I do?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear lybrate user I empathise with you absolutely. People are ignorant and are pathetically insensitive to an illness which happens due not to your fault. Might be some birth trauma (as is common in forceps delivery.). First of all I shall explain what is facial nerve. You should have good knowledge about it which will help you to tide over the mental agony you are going through. We have 12 pairs of nerve bundles called cranial nerves 1.2. 3. Up to 12.12 on right and 12 on left coming out of the brain. The first nerves carry the smell sensation called olfactory nerves. The second carry visual sensation to the brain (helping us to see) called optic nerves. The facial nerve is cranial nerve number 7th. Each supplies all the muscles of one side of the face. Because of this we can smile. Frown. Move the eyelids. Close the eyes etc. When both nerves (right and left) are sound. The muscles move normally so that your smile is perfect. Eyes close equally. But when one nerve is damaged. It causes weakness in the muscles of that side. And the other side being sound will cause normal movement of muscles of that side. As a result the corner of the mouth will be dragged to the sound side because the other sided muscles can not move due to nerve paralysis. This causes facial asymmetry. And you can not close your eyes effectively in the affected side. There is a risk to this. Because your affected sided eyelid cannot close. Your cornea of that eye will be constantly exposed and become dry and will form ulcer called' corneal ulcer'this has to be prevented. Else your vision will be affected badly. Coming to treatment: you must consult a neuro physician to deal with this problem. Because it gas become an old problem. It will take time for correction. So never give up. Apply artificial tear eye drops (like tear plus) one drop in each eye every 8 hourly. To prevent corneal damage. You will need some form of physiotherapy including electrical stimulation of the facial nerve if applicable in your case. I expect a fair outcome in your case. Good luck!
