Is it necessary to go for chemotherapy before I go for bone marrow transplant. I went for chemotherapy around 2 years back but the symptoms of cancer seem to have returned so my doctor advised me to go for a transplant. So I just want to know whether I need to go for chemotherapy again before the transplant or not.

Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Mohali
Trust your doctors. If they are advising BMT-Bone Marrow Transplant then obviously they are not satisfied with the result- as you have recurred. You are young so they want to give you the best.

Dr, M 54yrs old female attained menopause 4yrs ago and 3 months before when i noticed occasional bleed went to check up, done my USG and found my endometrium slightly thickened and been advised to go for D&C. M very much worried if it will lead to cancer.Kindly advice me

MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Hubli-Dharwad
First do the D & C you will get to know for sure that its cancer or not. Dont worry before the test as even if its cancer its curable as it will be a small tumor only, and if its non cancer then you need not go for any treatment, so do the test first.

Though it's not the chronological age but general condition that is more important but definitely my opinion would be that treatment should be directed to enhance quality of life, the intent of treatment may be palliative. There is no pain in treatment though but ofcourse chemo-radiation may be accompanied by side effects and depending on his general conditions and immunity he may or may not be able to bear the toxicity but I would personally prefer to give palliative treatment and best supportive care to make patient comfortable.

(my question is whether i should give it or not? )if is it okay to give then what should be the dosage?

The drug you mentioned is still experimental. We can't advise this at this moment. Diarrhoea is a common side effect after radiation. Majority of my patients with Ca cervix after radiation, complain this. It may persist for long time. It's distressing but not worrisome. So, don't worry.

Respected sir my name is pratiksha and my age is 24. I have a benign fibroadenoma so I would like to know that in future there is a change to get cancer. I consulted with a doctor and he told me it's benign. I have not done surgery till now. It's is compulsory to remove the tumor. If I don't remove in lifetime will there be a risk?

MD - Radiation Oncology, MBBS
Oncologist,
Fibroadenoma changing to a cancer is quite rare. However there is a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and it depends upon the specific features of fibroadenoma which can be identified in a biopsy test. If the biopsy test says that the risks are less then you can continue with a conservative treatment without surgery unless it's uncomfortable for you or if it grows in size or becomes painful later.

2013 dec i tested for PSA whcih shows10.5 .i took ayurvedic medicines for about 6 months and now the reading is 6.58 .should i undergo BIOpse

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology
Oncologist, Hyderabad
A PSA of 10may be seen in enlarged prostate of any reason. Get an ultrasound of pelvis done to check for nodules in the prostate. If any nodules are found a biopsy should be done. If it is a benign hypertrophy, follow it up with yearly PSA testing

My father is suffering from squamous cell carcinoma (which is showed on reports) on left leg. Can you please describe me about this. Suggest me treatment. The doctor said it's cancer. My father feeling fear. Please describe me about treatment and suggest me a doctor to consult.

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology

Dear lybrate-user, what you say it means he has skin cancer. The treatment depends upon the extent of tumor. Skin cancer really gets spread to other parts of the body with the result patient has no symptoms except local ones. If untreated for long time the disease may spread and give rise to different symptoms.

Am I more at risk to cancer if my relatives have cancer? What are the stages of cancer? What are the symptoms of cancer?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, cancer is usually caused by some mutations or change in genes, which is mostly due to some injury by chemicals, pollution, tobacco etc. About 5-7%cancers may be inherited from one generation to other. So there are only few types of cancers that may be inherited so don't worry. Cancer is staged according to size and it's spread. Usually there are four stages, fourth stage is when tumour spread to other organs apart from one they originated from. Cancer may present as lump, ulceration, abnormal bleeding, weight loss, altered bowel habits etc. Depending on the organ effected.
