Best Way To Treat Fever In Children

Best Way To Treat Fever In Children

Let us imagine a scenario: It is 4 in the morning. You are fast asleep and suddenly you hear the discomforting cries of your child. You sense that something is wrong and you immediately rush to the other room. As soon as you touch him, you realize that the child's body is burning up like a furnace? You immediately rush to get your thermometer and the figures on it do not make for a good reading - 102 degrees F. Panic dulls your response rate. Your first reaction is to call the doctor. It might be the right thing to do in some rare cases, but in most cases experts advise differently.

Stay Calm - The most important thing is for you to stay calm and relax and realize that it is still well within your hand to take care of the child. First things first, fever is not your enemy. Rather, it is body's way of telling you that your immune system is fighting alien elements in your body. Children of the age group 0 to 3 almost always face high temperatures at some point in their nascent lives.

The Need of the Hour - How you should go about it depends on your child's age and thermometer's readings. If your child is a newborn or is less than 3 months old and reading is above 100.4 degrees, then you must call the doctor at once.

Between 3 to 6 months, temperature threshold is 101 degrees F, while 103 degrees F is usually the limit for children older than 6 months. But, if the child is showing alarming symptoms such as body ache, fatigue, and diarrhoea, along with the high temperature of 101 degrees F or 102 degrees F, then you should consider calling the doctor on a priority basis.

Take the Hints - Be Wary of the Symptoms

Keeping an eye out on the symptoms is extremely important. If your child has a running nose and low-grade fever (99-100 degrees F), then he might be suffering from a bout of common cold. Vomiting and diarrhoea usually indicate stomach virus. For children with weak immune system or at higher risk than others, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

A 24 hours rest is generally advised in flu, till the patient is fever free without taking any antibiotics. Ailments like an earache, sore throat or discomfort in peeing should be brought to the notice of doctor as it might indicate soar throat, UTI or ear infection, all of which require antibiotic treatments. Certain signs warrant an immediate medical attention. Discomfort in breathing along with constant crying, difficulty in walking, unusual rashes and purple looking spots demand that he be taken to the E.R. right away.

The most important thing is to complete the treatment course diligently and let the fever run its course as it may actually aid the body in building immunity against the fever causing germs and fight them. One must remember that being calm and relaxed at taxing times go a long way in helping you take right decisions and treating fever in children is all about patience and right decisions.

Sir my son is 13 years old. He have obesity. His weight is about 70 Kg. Let me know the simplest way to loose weight of my son. Due to nature of my job I can't spare more time for my family. I will be thankful if you solve this problem. Thanks Umesh Khinvasara.

13years and weight 70kg. You need to become his role model and help him in a strict diet control, exercises and yoga if possible. Diet wise cut down his high calorie diet intake for example highly fried food items, bakery items, packed food items, breads, chocolates, icecreams. Encourage him to increase salads, soups, fruits, buttermilk, sprouts, vegetable juices in his diet. Tell him to take small meals at small intervals. Do not remain hungry for long duration this will make him hungry and he will eat more. Drink lots of water. Take him for cycling, skipping, jogging, daily morning and evening walks and see you will definitely get results in losing weight and get back to me after a month.

Speech Sound Disorders in Children!

Speech Sound Disorders in Children!

As young children learn language skills, it's normal for them to have some difficulty saying words correctly. That's part of the learning process. Their speech skills develop over time. They master certain sounds and words at each age. By age 8, most children have learned how to master all word sounds.

But some children have speech sound disorders. This means they have trouble saying certain sounds and words past the expected age. This can make it hard to understand what a child is trying to say. Speech sound disorders include articulation disorder and phonological process disorder. Articulation disorder is a problem with making certain sounds, such as" sh" phonological process disorder is a pattern of sound mistakes, such as not pronouncing certain letters.

About articulation disorder

  • Articulation disorder is the inability to form the certain word sounds correctly past a certain age. Word sounds may be dropped, added, distorted, or swapped. Keep in mind that some sound changes may be part of an accent, and are not speech errors. Signs of an articulation disorder can include:
  • Leaving off sounds from words (example: saying" coo" instead of" school")
  • Adding sounds to words (example: saying" puhlay" instead of" play")
  • Distorting sounds in words (example: saying" thith" instead of" this")
  • Swapping sounds in words (example: saying" wadio" instead of" radio")

About phonological process disorder

  • Phonological process disorder is a regular pattern of certain word speech mistakes. The mistakes may be common in young children learning speech skills, but when they persist past a certain age, it may be a disorder. Signs of a phonological process disorder can include:
  • Saying only one syllable in a word (example" bay" instead of" baby")
  • Simplifying a word by repeating two syllables (example" baba" instead of" bottle")
  • Leaving out a consonant sound (example" at" or" ba" instead of" bat")
  • Changing certain consonant sounds (example" tat" instead of" cat")

Causes of speech sound disorders

  • Often, there is no known cause for a speech sound disorder. But some speech sound errors may be caused by:
  • Injury to the brain
  • Intellectual or developmental disability
  • Problems with hearing or hearing loss, such as a history of ear infections
  • Physical abnormalities that affect speech, including cleft palate or cleft lip
  • Disorders affecting the nerves involved in speech

Diagnosing speech sound disorders

First, your child's hearing should be checked. This is to make sure that he or she isn't simply hearing words and sounds incorrectly.

If hearing loss is ruled out, you may want to contact a speech-language pathologist. This is a speech expert who evaluates and treats children who are having problems with speech-language and communication.

By watching and listening to a child speak, the speech-language pathologist can determine whether the issues are part of normal growth and development or are a speech sound disorder. The pathologist will evaluate your child's speech and language skills, keeping in mind accents and dialect. Speech-language pathologists can also assess if a physical problem in the mouth is affecting your child's ability to speak.

Treating speech sound disorder

  • The pathologist can then recommend a therapy plan to help your child overcome his or her disorder. Speech-language pathologists work with children to help them:
  • Recognize and correct sounds that they are making wrong
  • Learn how to correctly form their problem sound
  • Practice saying certain words and making certain sounds
  • The pathologist can also give you activities and strategies to help your child practice at home.
  • If your child has a physical defect in the mouth, the pathologist can also refer your child to an ear, nose, throat doctor or orthodontist if needed.

A positive outlook

Early recognition and diagnosis of speech sound disorders can help children overcome speech problems. They can learn how to communicate well and comfortably.

My daughter has got high fever suddenly with shivering. She is 7.7 years. She was fine till yesterday afternoon. Last evening became little lethargic and by night feverish. Is it because of sudden onset of cold weather? Or anything else?

I'm a new mother with a 8 month old baby. A white dot appeared on my nipple a couple of days ago. There is shooting pain while feeding and sore after feeding too. Any suggestions?

That might be a fungal infection. Keep your nipples clean and dry. After cleaning, apply warm coconut oil on the nipples. You can clean the oil before feeding.

My daughter is just 2 months old. She has a preference for putting her head towards the right side. While I turn it to the left every now and then, she keeps it there for a short while and turns back to her right. I'm now noticing a slight difference in the shape on the left and right. She doesn't like to use a horse shoe pillow and gets rashes with the mustard seed pillow. Will the shape of her head become permanent as it is now or will it change and get well rounded once she's sitting up and moving around more. I have received mixed responses to this, hence wanted to check.

Don't worry. Its because of the shape. Try to keep her head depends upon all sides. U can do one thing put some pillow or something which keeps it head opposite side. Also during day time when she awake keep bright colours toy or things on side left. So she keep seeing on that and rotate it to all side. She is just 2 months so not to worry about shape of head as head bones are still not fused which will fuse at around 1-1.5 yrs,but try this things if still shape become unequal then other methods are there.

Hi, I have a 19 month old daughter. She is always throwing tantrums and gets upset over small things. She cries a lot when we don't give her whatever she desires and eventually has her way. I don't want to spoil her and need help to understand her psychology and control her behavior.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
This is the terrible twos. The child was once the center of the world and has to now adjust to the fact that you are going to have to meet some of your own needs before hers. She will not be able to take it for some time. You need to set boundaries and let the child know that she will not be neglected but she must develop a little patience. She will throw tantrums to force the attention from you and she will try to control you too. Help her tide over this phase without rejecting her. For example, you can tell her to stop crying when she wants something until you are available or finished doing whatever you are doing. She can cry a little but do not allow her to whine or holler for too long. She will also learn anger management at a child level with these types of behaviors. Don?t ever deprive her of love. As this process unfolds, she will develop good self-control and will be a fabulous child as time flies by. Later on you will also find it easy with her for this worthwhile investment. It may last for a year maximum, if handled well.

1. A child will not sleep through the night i. E it will wake up a few times at night when it is breastfeeding. This is natural, so do not worry so much. Continue breastfeeding till he is a year old and then slowly wean him off. He will have a good nights sleep once he is off breast feed 2. For dinner - for a 9 month old, well cooked rice with well cooked mashed vegetables is a great dinner option. Millet's are great too. You can use it instead of rice, but please give a test dose to ensure that it suits your child. Vegetables are rich in fiber so that will keep him full 3. The time for dinner depends on his bedtime. If he sleeps at ten then you should give him the last solid by 9 pm 4. Avoid sugar or any sugar based products after 7pm. Sugar tends to give instant energy and thus causes delayed and disturbed sleep in children.

Vitamins for Children Can Raise Their IQs

Doctorate in Clinical Psy, Mphil in Clinical Psychology, PG Dip Edu Counselling , Certificate in Nutrition & Mental health, Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Psychologist, Trivandrum

Chances are your children or grand children are back in school after the summer break. So I thought it was a good time to highlight the fact that the right vitamins for children can improve their mental performanceIn fact, hundreds of studies underscore the importance of nutrition in cognitive development.

Stephen Schoenthaler, Ph.D., a professor at California State University at Stanislaus, has been researching this topic for years. In one study, Dr. Schoenthaler and his colleagues tested the IQs of 245 schoolchildren between the ages of 6 and 12 in Phoenix, Ariz. They then enlisted teachers to distribute either a vitamin and mineral supplement or a placebo to these children on a daily basis.

At the study's conclusion, IQ tests were again administered, and the students who had been taking the supplements and vitamins for children had an average 2.5 point gain in IQ. The truly impressive finding of this study, however, was that the children who were poorly nourished at the study's onset gained at least 15 IQ points!

The researchers also noted that test scores were closely linked with school performance, and suggested that parents “of school children whose academic performance is substandard would be well advised to seek a nutritionally oriented physician for assessment of their children's nutritional status.”
