Breast Lumps - How Can They Be Treated?

MBBS, MD
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Breast Lumps - How Can They Be Treated?

A breast lump is an enlargement, swell, protuberance or a bump that is different than the breast tissue surrounding it. Breast lumps can appear in men as well as women and they can be benign or malignant. Causes of benign breast lumps are as follows:

  1. Fibroadenosis: Also known as Fibro-cystic breast disease, it is a benign condition that affects the breast. It may affect either of the breasts or both. One of the major symptoms of Fibroadenosis is a breast lump. Usually, the lumpiness disappears after the menstrual cycle is over. Fibroadenosis occurs because the breast tissue doesn’t respond well to the hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle.
  2. Fibroadenomas: Fibroadenomas occur because of abnormal response to the hormone oestrogen. The lumps are usually well formed and round, around the milk ducts of the breast. Breast lumps due to Fibroadenomas are called breast mice, because they move around the breast. In some cases, they disappear and in some, they tend enlarge during pregnancy.

Other benign causes of breast lumps are breast abscesses, breast cysts, lipoma (lump of fat), mastitis (infection in the breast tissues), fat necrosis (another name for breast lumps) and intraductal papilloma (benign tumour of the milk ducts in the breast). A breast lump that is firm, well defined and doesn’t move around, i.e. it doesn’t disappear after your period or pregnancy, may be a result of breast cancer.

Treatment of breast lumps
The treatment of a breast lump depends on its cause. Benign breast lumps usually disappear over time. Otherwise following treatments can be considered as per the doctor’s discretion-

  1. Medication: If the breast lumps are painful or increase over time, it is advisable to take medication.
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other painkillers like paracetamol
    • Danazol, Tamoxifen or Bromocriptine are administered to treat breast pain as well
    • Antibiotics which are administered to cure breast abscesses that are caused due bacterial infections
  2. Limiting the amount of fat in the diet or wearing well fitting bras also reduces the amount of pain due to breast lumps.
  3. Certain types of breast lumps are filled with fluid or pus. This fluid can be drained through a procedure called aspiration or drainage.
  4. A radical way to treat a breast lump is surgery. Many a times, these lumps get bigger and painful and the most effective way to deal with it is to remove it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

My friend who is 20 years old got hurt in the anal area while having sex. She was in a lot of pain. She fainted in some time. What could be the reason that she fainted?

Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS, FICS
General Surgeon, Delhi
She must have developed an anal fissure. Anal Fissure is a painful condition and extreme pain can sometimes lead to fainting. She should have sitz bath at least twice a day. Keep the stools soft by taking plenty of fluids and fibre rich diet. She can take some stool softener at bed time for few days. She must avoid non -veg, fried and spicy food. A pain killer sos may help. Thanks.

Hello, Start taking nutritious, healthy food and daily yoga or some kind of exercises, it will be automatically reflected on your face. Yes, the colour which is inherited from your parents/ ancestors, cannot be changed, but you can try to get glow on your face!! Daily Regime: Apart from these, you do follow CTMP, i.e., cleansing, toning, moisturising and protection (apply liberally sunscreen with SPF-30 ? a thick layer of Bakson's Suncare cream may be, 20-30 minutes before going out daily and repeat it's application after every 3-4hrs.) after washing your face daily; use the products as per your skin type. This will change the skin texture and skin tone. In case you do have tanning, apply honey with a dash of lime on your face. Eat right and healthy that too on time, relieve your stress/ tensions, sleep well, stop smoking, as this restricts blood flow to your face and leaves you with a greyish complexion. lead a healthy lifestyle! Apart from this, avoid anger, anxiety, fear which increases stress hormone in the body and subsequently makes your complexion darker! (Hormonal imbalances also plays a major role). If the dull and dark skin tone is due to any underlying ailment or diseases, need to look into the matter. Diet: -Increase your Vitamin C intake (lemon,orange,gooseberry,etc.Fruits/juices, strawberries, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and green peas). - Eat more Vitamin A (nonfat milk, oysters, and egg yolks, carrots, watermelon, papaya, tomatoes, or other dark colored produce) . If you feel your skin is weak or not tight enough, that usually suggests a lack of Vitamin A. Medicine: You can also use homoeopathic cream - Medicynth's Whitch Hazel daily at night. Home remedies: Apply fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your entire face and neck. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. After this, rub cucumber slices on your skin to soften and moisturize it. Do this daily or every other day. Another option is squeeze the juice of one-half lemon and mix one to two tablespoons of raw honey in it. Apply it on your face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off. Make a paste of 'Kasturi Manjal' (wild turmeric) with rose petals, saffron and raw milk which is very effective.

Hi lichen planus is an autoimmune inflammatory disease related to other systemic diseases like thyroiditis, pernicious anaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis c, certain drugs, diabetes. Sometimes it occurs without any particular reason. But there are a lot of solutions for it. Many treatment modalities are available. Topical medicines, systemic drugs, light therapy. A customised approach can be arrived at with a proper evaluation.

HHLite cream contains Mometasone, which is a strong steroid which should not be used on the face. It will give you brightening but the face will become dependent on it and will become dull as soon as you stop. In the long term it can cause the steroid side effects- thinning of skin, visible veins, excess hair growth, pigmentation, stretch marks etc. Stop it immediately and switch to a mild vitamin e cream or moisturiser. It will take 3 to 6 months to recover from the steroid dependent skin. Its possible to achieve your basic color and glow back by taking a skin lightening treatment regimen for 6-8 months, consisting of sunscreens, skin lightening creams, antioxidants and multivitamins and external treatments like peels. After this you will have to maintain the results by application of sunscreen and moisturisers daily. A combination of all these treatments with Q-switch laser can help you achieve lightening of the pigment. Stick to the treatment for 8-10 months and take optimum sessions of the laser.
