Good morning Doctors my age is 21 years female, studying B.Tech final year. I'm facing a different problem with memory. 2 days back night I was slept at 10'o clock and my friend calls me at 11'o clock and she said "Tomorrow we have viva come with record" when I woke up usually I went to class, she had asked me about record, I said "What record" I don't know when you called me. She said I called you at 11'o clock said 3 times about this information and you said "ok ok i'll bring" or see your calls history. I shocked that 2 minutes call duration was there and she said I was given responsibility to her. I don't know doctor what is happening to me. I'm forgetting everything who ever giving information when i'm sleeping. This is not first time doctor I faced so many problems like this, so please provide solution to my disease.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
You need to get your memory problems seriousy evaluated. You might require a MRI scan, EEG preferably sleep EEG and some tests for memory. Based on the results remedy can be suggested. Many people in particular cycle of sleep cannot recollect events afer awakening, so it need not always be abnormal. When you get call s like this, ask them to message or watsapp you the details and make it a habit early in the morning to check for the messages, for not missing anything. All the best.

I am 31 years male. I urinate properly but at end of urinating when I apply some pressure some urine come out. H/O multiple sclerosis since 2009.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
I believe you should not be excessively concerned about residual urine unless it is more than 300 ml. If you fee like there is only" some" urine that comes our if you apply pressure after voiding is completed, you do not need medical help. The fact that you have a h/o multiple sclerosis since 2009 has nothing to do with your current problem. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!

Massage Therapy for Pain - An In-Depth Analysis!

MD, FIPP
Pain Management Specialist, Kolkata
Massage Therapy for Pain - An In-Depth Analysis!

There are many ways to treat pain and this includes acupuncture, several natural remedies, technological procedures and surgery. Among the different approaches of treating pain, massage therapy is an effective method.

  1. Massage therapy is one of the earliest therapeutic processes for relieving pain for a long time as it provides ideal relief and performs recovery functions as well. In the modern day, massage therapy is a popular pain relieving remedy, which is utilized by people all over the world.
  2. Massage therapy involves manipulation of the tissues, which is performed by special therapists. There are various types of massage therapies, which incorporate different techniques and procedures.
  3. Long term massage therapy is not very expensive and has no side effects on the body. With the help of massaging, there is an increased lymph flow, improved blood circulation and several positive effects on the immune system. Local biochemical changes occur, neural activity gets enhanced and all these mean that pain is reduced.

Conflicting views

The current studies on massage therapy are quite conflicting and there are negative views regarding the effects of massage therapy to provide pain relief. Massage therapies are successful in treating several cases of lower-back pain. However, many experts consider massage therapy to be a relaxation technique and not a proper treatment procedure.

They say that massage provides relief to pain, but physical therapy, exercise and medicines are far superior in providing pain relief than massage therapy. Massage provides relief to neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. However, it is considered that this relief is only temporary and not consistent enough. A single session of massage therapy does not really provide a long-term relief from pain. For better and lasting results, massage therapy should be undertaken regularly.

Multidisciplinary treatment

Massage alone will never provide ideal relief from any kind of pain and a multidisciplinary approach should be taken for pain relief treatment, where massage therapy would be one of the elements. For ideal pain relief, you should practice other measures such as physical therapy, behavioral health care, acupuncture, regular exercise and use massage therapy as a complementary relief method.

Massage therapy can never be the main treatment procedure for treating pain and it is an accompanying treatment method which you should practice along with major treatment procedures. Massage therapy combined with other therapies will provide you effective pain relief.

Massage therapy for pain provides effective temporary relief from pain. It should be performed by a trained massage therapist and for good results must be performed every day. However, massage therapy is not a primary treatment measure and should be a part of a multidisciplinary approach for pain relief.

I have been addicted to smoking from last two years. How can I get out from this addiction can you pls suggest me.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear lybrate user, you may need a bit of willpower to stop smoking permanently. You could easily abstain yourself from smoking during the initial 2-3 days. But after few days of abstaining from smoking you will feel a strong craving to smoke a cigarette whenever you face any tense situation. Here lies your real test. You will need a lot of willpower to resist that craving & face any tense situation without the help of nicotine. However, you can take homoeopathic mother tincture daphne indica q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to reduce your craving for nicotine. To minimise the bad-effects of smoking take one single bulb garlic everyday at morning before brushing your teeth.

This is for my sister-she is been suffering from depression from past 2-11/2 years and had undergone a treatment last year and after few months she recovered and was completely normal, recently her symptoms have come back and is need of treatment and would like her to be seen by another physcritist and get second opinion too. Thanks.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Thrissur
Respected Sir, I perfectly understand what you are feeling and empathize with you completely. When it comes to our family and loved ones, no number of opinions is going to leave us entirely satisfied. However you have to understand that Depression tends to have a recurring course, in some individuals. The fact that you mentioned that she recovered within a few months of treatment leads me to believe that the diagnosis and treatment of the psychiatrist you consulted initially was accurate and spot on. Usually in treatment of 1st episode depression treatment needs to be continued for 9-12 months. If not, the chances of recurrence are very high. Even if you complete the entire duration of treatment which I doubt you did, there is a small chance of recurrence. Moreover in most cases, patients usually want to continue treatment with the same psychiatrist to whom they have opened up their innermost thoughts and feelings. Hence, I would advise you to discuss with the patient and then decide together regarding continuing treatment with the same psychiatrist but the change of psychiatrist is unlikely to bring about a change in the recurring course of depression if treatment is not continued regularly.

Relax dear lybrate user. Your wife (step mom) has undergone a series of uncommon experiences in her life. First, she had to adjust to or tolerate the thought as a second wife that is not deirable to any women. Second, she has to adjust with the sudden death of her husband (your father). Third, she might be having a feeling of guilt that she had married a person who was in a position of her son and also the fear of social viwes about the new relationship with you. All these happenings need a substantial amount of time to get adjusted. In her case all these happened within a short perod of time. Even though it is difficult to practice for a young person like you, I suggest you to be friendly with her and not to hurry for sex at least for a month. Give her your emotional support as much as possible and let her express her feelings freely. As time advaces you will certainly have a good love life. I wish you a happy married life.

Hello, There are many aspects of depression, the more of them you have the more likely you are to have a clinical depression. Some patients feel severely depressed and suicidal. If you have these feelings you should go to the emergency department immediately. Other things that people with depression can feel are sadness, low energy, lack of motivation, poor sleep, irritability, weight gain or loss, poor self image and sometimes even a lack of touch with reality. The more of these symptoms you have the more likely it is that you have serious depression. Treatments for depression include medications, counseling and exercise. Again the more of these you do the better your chance for a successful treatment. Good luck to you,

Dear user. Sleep talking, or somniloquy, is the act of speaking during sleep. It's a type of parasomnia -- an abnormal behavior that takes place during sleep. It's a very common occurrence and is not usually considered a medical problem. Ignore it for better results. Take care.

I am passing through a very hard time. Recently I broke up my 2.5 years relation with my girlfriend. Her mother refused me. I tried my level based to patch up the matter. And I was not in a position to escape her as both of us were determined to marry after compromise from both family. 1 month ago I talked last time with her and we both realized the situation. She tried to contact with me but every time I refused. But recently she is getting close with one of my friend with home I used to study during M. Sc. 5/6 years back. And the matter known to me via fb friend. After listening the matter from that day I am feeling weak to her and repeatedly remembering our sweet memories. I am trying to get rid of this. My sleeping habit also changed and became short. Last night I blocked that friend in fb. My family is searching a girl to marry recently. I am having financial problem too as I am repairing my home to look better for marriage purpose. I listen to music, view movies. But major problem is that I stay alone far from my home due to job. I have been trying to forget everything but when some of friend ask about her I became very emotional and helpless. please suggest me some way so that I can pass this hard time.

Breakdown is a chance for break through. Read stories of great people. Inspiring stories catapult change. Some people work intensely so that their mind is engaged in something productive, meaningful and give a sense of fulfillment. Keep a sentry to watch your thoughts. Politely tell, "Go away" to unwanted thoughts. Reading good books, engaging in hobby helps tide over sour patches of life. Best,
