Apart from taking symptomatic treatment I will suggest you to buy a steam inhaler machine of crescent company and take a flow of steam (of plain water only) over the forehead through the inhaler and can repeat the process after eight hours as and when required.

The Secret to Avoiding FRACTURES, Revealed by Dr. Kamal Bachani

The secret to avoiding bone and joint related injuries revealed!

An average person experiences two fractures during his or her lifetime and same holds true for joint related injuries. The severity of this condition depends on a number of factors, ranging from the forces responsible for injury and location to the damage done to the nearby tissues and bones.

How age plays a role in your chances of getting a fracture?

Your risk and severity of developing a fracture, depends, to a certain extent on your age.

A very common occurrence during childhood is crippling joint related injuries, the fractures that you tend to have during this time are generally less complex than the broken bone instances that you stand to experience when you enter adulthood.

With time, your bones become fragile and you become prone to broken bones sustained from falls, which you wouldn't when you were young. Furthermore, as you step into your 50th year, you can get struck by the bone condition osteoporosis, a leading cause of bone fractures during this time. For women, menopause makes them more susceptible to osteoporosis (as infrequent periods and hormonal changes at this time lead to loss of bone mass) and subsequently broken bones.

Preventing crippling joint injuries need many steps in younger generation known as prehab especially for sporting population and adult population involved in day to day activities requiring your body getting subjected to physical stress.

Simple steps to get your joints back to normal in case you do get into injuries.

  • having a calcium and vitamin d rich diet to strengthen bones
  • exercising to strengthen bone and muscle health as well as your balance
  • taking relevant medicines to make your bones strong
  • going for timely bone mineral density test to determine the health of your bone
  • exposing yourself to the sun for about 20 minutes everyday
  • having a requisite calcium intake of 1000 mg and 1200 mg for pre- and postmenopausal women respectively
  • preventing a fracture by modification in your household furniture, extra clothings, sometimes addition of simple orthotic devices, improving your muscle reaction time etc go in long way to help prevent falls.

I am 37 years male. My left hand 10th rib cracked in an accident on 15/12/2016. Now I want to know how can I recover my rib early and after how many time I get my normal life. Please suggest me what is the best sleeping position in this condition, also give me idea about bike riding. Thank you.

MBBS, MD - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Pain Management Specialist, Jaipur
Hello lybrate-user Fracture 10th rib: We need to discuss whether it is displaced or non-displaced fracture. Secondly, fracture of rib takes at least 1 month to heal and also pain persists for one to one-and-half month. You can sleep straight with soft pillow on your left chest to support fractured area. Also you can take right lateral position while sleeping. While bike riding, you need to wear RIB BELT to immobilize the area, otherwise bike riding will increase the pain. We need to order some blood investigations and then discuss your problem in detail. Kindly consult me in private. Thank you.

I am suffering from severe cough and cold from one month. So what remedies should I take.

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
There are several things you can do to prevent a cold. they are all easy. -Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. -Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. -Get plenty of rest/sleep.staying at home will keep you from spreading germs.Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Drink plenty of fluids(veg/tomato soups, dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food(like sprouts/boiled eggs without yolk with milk). Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can impair your sleep -Treatment:A cold usually lasts for a week or two. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn't need medical treatment. -Complications like infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs must be treated with antibiotics. -Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -Tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -Do steam inhalation once or twice daily -Cough- For dry cough.Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough.(1 tsp thrice daily) -Productive cough:it brings up mucus from behind the throat or the lungs. These coughs should not be suppressed to the point that they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. -Get chest xray done if cough lasts for more than a week and consult doctor immediately.

I have addicted of smoking (2-4 daily). I want to leave this? What I do for it. And also I have addicted about sex. Give suggestion please

It is a good thing that you want to get rid of smoking but it is not easy because there is a lot of conditioning associated with it and these can be spread over the whole day and night!!! When you decide, it must be done immediately and abruptly. Waiting another day will jeopardize the decision. Since you want to do it I recommend that you seek the help of a counselor and do it with support, if the addiction is too much. You need to identify with why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all, announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. To help process all of the above and to get support, go for counseling and persevere with it until you are completely over it. Regarding addiction to sex, you need to be more specific. Any way it is bound to have the obsession about sex a lot of the day and that will feed into the compulsion to act on it. If it is masturbation that you are addicted to it has some other ramifications and will affect your love life later. If it is addiction to sexual contact with women, then that has to be taken into consideration especially when you will need to withdraw from female company until you have resolve the issue. You will need to meet a sexologist and a counselor to work on the drive and the emotions attached to the addiction. You need to start regular exercise, eat well and sleep well. There is a need to be fruitfully occupied and when in social situations to keep your mind occupied on matters other than sex. You will need to get a sex education to understand and value and respect sex with the total five dimensions that it has: the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and even spiritual aspects. In the counseling you will need to understand women and not make them into sex objects. It is a good thing that you want to get rid of smoking but it is not easy because there is a lot of conditioning associated with it and these can be spread over the whole day and night!!! When you decide, it must be done immediately and abruptly. Waiting another day will jeopardize the decision. To help process all of the above and to get support, go for counseling and persevere with it until you are completely over it. You will need to work on the emotions around women and see if there is any basis for childhood experiences that may be contributing to the addiction. The fixation to sex may be a substitute for love and you may be mixing the two up and replacing one for the other, and will never feel completely satiated. There could be a rigid value system, and script issue that must looked into. You will be taught the true meaning of love too.
