Breast Cancer - 6 Ways You Can Prevent it

Breast cancer begins when the cells that are present in the breast start to go out of control. These cells generally form a tumor which can be seen on mammogram or one can feel it as a lump. The tumor is threatening if the cells can grow into the tissues that surround it or spread to other areas of the body. Breast cancer happens mostly in ladies. Here are a few methods with which you can prevent breast cancer-

  1. Keep your weight in check: Maintaining a healthy weight is important for everyone although, it is easy to tune it out since it is said so often. Being overweight can expand the danger of a wide range of cancers, including breast cancer, particularly after menopause.
  2. Be physically active: Women who are physically active for almost or at least 30 minutes a day have a lower danger of breast cancer. Normal activity is additionally one of the ideal approaches to keep weight under control.
  3. Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables and Avoid Too Much Alcohol: A balanced and healthy diet can bring down the danger of breast cancer. Attempt to eat a considerable measure of fruits and vegetables and keep liquor at moderate levels or lower. While moderate drinking can be useful for the heart in most grown-ups, even low levels of intake can build the danger of breast cancer. If you do not drink, don't feel you have to begin. In case you drink modestly, there is less risk.
  4. Try not to Smoke: Smokers and non-smokers alike know how undesirable smoking is. It brings down a person’s quality of life and expands the danger of heart and lung diseases, stroke, and no less than 15 types of cancer, including breast cancer. It additionally causes bad breath, awful teeth, and wrinkles.
  5. Breastfeed, If Possible: Breastfeeding for almost one year or more brings down the danger of breast cancer. It additionally has extraordinary medical advantages for the baby as well, especially in terms of immunity.
  6. Keep away from Birth Control Pills: Contraceptive pills have both dangers and advantages. In many cases, the more young a lady is, the lower the danger is. While ladies are taking birth control pills, they have more chances of falling prey to breast cancer as per various medical studies. This danger leaves rapidly in the wake of stopping the pill. The danger of stroke and heart attack is increased while on the pill, especially if the woman smokes. Long term use can likewise have essential advantages, such as bringing down the danger of ovarian cancer, colon tumor and uterine cancer and undesirable pregnancy. In case you are exceptionally worried about breast cancer, staying away from birth control pills is also an alternative to lower the risk. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an oncologist and ask a free question.

Colorectal Cancer - 5 Common Surgical Treatments Available for it

Colorectal Cancer - 5 Common Surgical Treatments Available for it

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer or bowel cancer; is the occurrence of cancer in the colon and the rectum region. Colorectal cancer may either be malignant or benign, the former spreads to other areas of the body whereas, the latter stays confined to its place. It is characterized by an abnormal growth of cells in the rectum or the colon.

The various surgical treatment options for colorectal cancer are:

1. Right colectomy: This procedure involves removal of the right part of the colon. A part of the small intestine, which is attached to the right side of the colon, known as ileum, is also removed.

2. Partial colectomy: In partial colectomy, only a portion of the colon that has been affected by cancer is removed. The remaining parts are fused together in a process called ‘Anastomosis’. This procedure does not cause much change in your bowel habits.

3. Total abdominal colectomy: In this procedure, the large intestine is removed from the body.

4. Abdominoperineal resection: Abdominoperineal resection involves removing the rectum, anus and the sigmoid colon (part of the intestine that leads to the rectum).

5. Total proctocolectomy: This is an extensive procedure wherein, both the colon and the rectum are removed. If the anus is weak or damaged, then it needs to be removed as well.

Apart from these procedures, there are other surgical procedures that complement the above procedures, they are:

1. Fecal diversion: This is a procedure where an opening is formed between the small intestine and the skin’s surface so that it facilitates the healing process.

2. K pouch: The K pouch also called continent ileostomy is a pouch, which is attached to the anus so that feces can be passed normally. The K pouch contains nipple valve that prevents leakage; it is emptied by inserting a catheter in the stoma.

3. Stomas: A stoma is an opening on the skin of the bowel. This is done when the normal route of bowel is disturbed after a surgery.

What Causes Colon Cancer ? + It's Warning Signs

MBBS, MD - Medicine, POST GRADUATE CLINICAL COURSE IN DIABETES MANAGEMENT
General Physician, Delhi
What Causes Colon Cancer ? + It's Warning Signs

Colon cancer is cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon). In most cases it begins as a non-malignant group of cells called polyps, which may turn cancerous over time. After the formation of the malignant tumors, the cancerous cells may spread to other parts of your body through lymph and blood channels. It can occur together with rectal cancer and is known as colorectal cancer.

Causes of Colon Cancer

The occurrence of colon cancer may depend on the presence of precancerous polyps in the colon. Adenomas polyps may turn cancerous, but are removable through colonoscopy. Hyperplastic polyps rarely become cancerous, whereas inflammatory polyps may become cancerous after the inflammation of the colon.

Other risk factors that may influence the occurrence of colon cancer are,

  • Genetics: about 20% colon cancers are thought to be caused by mutation of the genes.
  • Age: those over the age of 50 are more likely to develop colon cancer, though now it is also increasingly affecting younger people.
  • Lifestyle: it is more likely to affect people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, smoke tobacco or are obese.
  • Diet: it is more likely to affect those whose diets are high in red meats, calories, and fat while being low in fiber. Alcohol consumption may also affect its occurrence.
  • Medical conditions: people who suffer from diabetes, acromegaly (growth hormone disorder) and colitis etc, may also be prone to develop colon cancer.

Warning Signs of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer generally goes undetected in the early stages. The symptoms vary with the location, spread and size of the tumor. In the earlier stages of cancer, most people experience no symptoms, but in the later stages they may experience one or more of these symptoms:

- Change in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation or change in consistency of stools; lasting more than a month
- Blood in stool or bleeding from the rectum
- Pain during passage of stool
- Pain, cramps or gas in the abdominal region
- Frequent urges to pass stool
- Weakness
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Anemia
- Unexpected weight loss

However, these symptoms may not necessarily indicate colon cancer. They can occur in the absence of colon cancer too.

I am suffering from Hodgkin lymphoma from last 1year. I want to ask what are the causes of this and how can we leave from this and what types of food I need to eat and in how much time take to healthy me?

MBBS, DNB ( Radiation Oncology)
Oncologist, Mumbai
Hello, hodgkins lymphoma is usually a treatable cancer which responds very well to chemotherapy and radiation. Depending on the stage the number of cycles of chemotherapy and radiation dose is decided. Many times there may be history of exposure to radiation in childhood and many times it just happens due to some genetic mutations too. You should have a balanced diet, with adequate proteins, green leafy vegetables, fruits, lots of antioxidants. Hope that helps!

Cancer Symptoms Men Ignore

1. Problems When You Pee
Many men have some problems peeing as they get older, like:
A need to pee more often, especially at night
Dribbling, leaking, or an urgent need to go
Trouble starting to pee, or a weak stream
An enlarged prostate gland usually causes these symptoms, but so can prostate cancer. See your doctor to check on the cause of the problem. He?ll give you an exam to look for an enlarged prostate, and he may talk to you about a blood test (called a PSA test) for prostate cancer.

2. Changes in Your Testicles
"If you notice a lump, heaviness, or any other change in your testicle, never delay having it looked at.
"Unlike prostate cancer, which grows slowly, testicular cancer can take off overnight" Your doctor will look for any problems with a physical exam, blood tests, and an ultrasound of your scrotum.

3. Blood in Your Pee or Stool
These can be among the first signs of cancer of the bladder, kidneys, or colon. It's a good idea to see your doctor for any bleeding that?s not normal, even if you don't have other symptoms,
Although you're more likely to have a problem that's not cancer, like haemorrhoids or a urinary infection, it's important to find and treat the cause.

4) Breast Changes
"Men tend to ignore breast lumps because breast cancer isn't on their radar"
"But 1% of all breast cancers occur in men, although they're usually diagnosed much later" Don?t take any chances. If you find a lump, tell your doctor and have it checked.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer is a genetic disease. Gene sequence gets disturbed by some injury by chemicals, tobacco, radiation exposure, adulterated food, viruses, pollution, pesticides or even spontaneously. Due to altered genetic make up, cells grow uncontrolled and exhaust body resources. Any age any gender can present with cancer, so be cautious about environment u live in, food you eat and any potential carcinogens

My father age is 59 was suffering from tongue cancer stage 2 And he is taking ayurvedic medicine what food he want to take please tell best food and best Fruit please tell good solution to cure.

MD - Radiation Oncology, MBBS
Oncologist,
Dear lybrate user, sorry to reply off topic but you should know that stage 2 tongue cancer has a higher chance of cure if they are treated in time. It will require surgery with or without radiation therapy afterwards. We have come across thousands of patients with such cancers who have been effectively treated with this treatment. If left untreated it will progress and once its stage goes up it will become very difficult or even impossible to cure later. So I would strongly advise you to consult a surgical or radiation oncologist without delay.

Hello doctor, I saw discharge from my nipple by pressing it I am planning a family is it tat something related to it ...
Discharge from nipple may not be connected anything with planning a family/ pregnancy etc. Sometimes it happens in males too. Reason could be suspicious if you are not nursing. But no need to panic. But notice if discharge is from one nipple only or come without touching it. It's better to meet your healthcare professional. For'gath' - it could fibroid, cyst, tumour. If so proper measures needed. In modern medicine they would go for surgical measures, d&c etc as per gynaec's decision. In ayurveda, aartav shuddhi is directed which is a non invasive, non surgical, non surgical measure by use of decoctions. Time taken could be right weeks minimum. Still better to assess consistency, size, type if knot by modern investigation.
