Is cancer really a vitamin deficiency? These days getting so many articles to read about?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
cancer really is not a vitamin deficiency. It is A disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue.Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements] While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans

Can person sufferings from blood cancer can be cured by bone marrow transplant? If yes how it can be possible?

European Society for Medical Oncology certification, DM - Oncology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
The term bone marrow transplant is actually a misnomer in the present context as transplant is now conducted by harvesting stem cells from the blood of the donor. So the correct and logical term now is peripheral blood stem cell transplant. This is just like a blood donation for the donor and poses no risk at all to the donor. The term blood cancer is generally used for leukemias, these can be of two types - acute and chronic. For the chronic leukemias, specially chronic myeloid leukemia, stem cell transplant is now generally not required as drugs like imatinib, dasatinib and nilotinib are extremely effective. For chronic lymphocytic leukemia too transplant is rarely done these days and is generally reserved for relatively younger patients. Even in the imatinib era transplant is an effective procedure and can cure patients with cml (chronic myeloid leukemia) who do not respond to imatinib and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors. For acute myeloid leukemias stem cell transplant is recommended for all cases except the low risk cases, after completion of chemotherapy. Risk is defined based on kind of genetic mutations in the leukemic cells for acute lymphoblastic leukemia transplant is generally done at relapse, but certain genetic mutations necessitate an earlier transplant, so does presence of or increase in minimal residual disease, which signifies cancer cells not visible to the human eye under the microscope. Procedure of stem cell transplant hla matching is done between patient and siblings. Best match is selected as a donor. Matched sibling is the most commonly used donor in blood cancers. In many cases a match is not available, for such cases matched unrelated donor, cord blood, or a partially matched donor (haploidentical donor) is sometimes selected. Donor is given growth factor injection subcutaneously to bring out the stem cells from the bone marrow to bloodstream, twice daily for 5 days. After that the stem cells are collected and stored. Patient is given high dose chemotherapy to kill cancer cells as well as his normal marrow. After chemotherapy, donor stem cells are injected into the body of patient from a vein. After approximately 11-14 days the donor cells get engrafted in the patient's marrow and start producing normal blood cells. The donor cells also kill the cancer cells and prevent cancer from coming back. Overall depending on whether the patients cancer is controlled or not before transplant the cure rate after transplant can vary from 60 % for patients who have a good control and less aggressive disease biology, to less then 20 % in patients with uncontrolled disease before transplant. Overall, approximately 40 % patients get cured with a transplant. Upto 40 % patients can develop complications, and half of these may be very severe and life threatening. This figure is more in mismatched transplants. Apart from complications, there is still a risk of relapse and these patients need close monitoring in the first few years after transplant.

Am 23years boy and I am a weekly smoker but I afraid of the cancer so please suggest to prevent it and also to stop smoking.

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I suggest you to consult a psychologist or de addiction therapist. Take care.

Hello Dr. Can my wife take cervical cancer vaccine during breastfeeding. My son is 10 months old now and she will turn 30 by next year. We heard that vaccine to b taken before 30 years. Pls recommend?

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Delhi
Dear lybrate-user, as such there is no harm in having cervical cancer vaccine, but why are you in so much hurry. You have to take such precaution unless there is severe indication or there are severe predisposing factors for cervical cancer formation. It is not a strict indication that cancer vaccine should be taken before 30 yrs. It can be taken at any age, but at the age of 30 cervix is more exposed to the insults, you can vaccinate your wife at your convenience.

I have tumor in left breast. And I have done a blood ,mammography, x-ray test. Which is normal. What medicine for this without surgery.

MS, MBBS
General Surgeon, Raipur
You can not declare that a mass has no cancer without some tissue biopsy. If biopsy (can be done with a needle) shows no cancer, you can live with the mass. No further treatment needed. But also there are no medicines to resolve that mass. If you are okay with regular examinations and follow up with ultrasound or mammograms you can avoid surgery. In case there is any suspicion of cancer (not likely at your age) it needs to be removed. In either case, there is no way to get rid of a mass without surgery. Ag your age, though, a log of masses are not really tumors. They often disappear on their own. Check with a doctor.

Hi I am 25 years old girl and I have a big lump in my right breast. It pain once in 10-15 days for 2-3 min automatically and than get painless also. Please suggest is this causing cancer? What are the chances and what should I need to do? It is in breast from last 3 years.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Ghaziabad
Going by the history of lump, pain in breast and your age the chances of lump being a Benign lump (non cancer type) is more but there is no way to predict with surety that the lump is not of a cancer. Usual signs of a lump of cancer are - rapid increase in the size of the lump, skin getting fixed or adhering to the lump, presence of a hard lump, Irregular shape, lump not moving freely inside the breast. Presence of any lump in breast should be considered a warning sign and should be shown to a Surgeon as early as possible. Ideally a clinical examination by surgeon, an Ultrasound of breast and a Biopsy/FNAC from the breast lump will have more than 99% chance of identifying a Cancer lump.

symptoms of cancer depend on the site where it arises. If its a throat cancer, there may be difficulty swallowing, change in voice, pain during swallowing sometimes, etc. Lung cancer may present as unresolving cough with expectoration, weight loss, loss of appetite, etc. Usually cancer is higher in smokers.
