Hi pain can be due to some conditions like cavities, tooth abcess, gum disease, and fracture of tooth. So its important to find out the cause of pain. You need to go for investigation and diagnosis. After that treatment can be decided. For healthier teeth brush regularly two times. Rinse your mouth after each meal. Floss your tooth to prevent food impaction avoid sticky and sweetened food, tobacco products, alcohol and smoking. Visit a dentist regularly every 6 months.

Plz take a pain killer and then consult a dentist. Pain killer is only going to give you temporary relief. Dentist will find out the cause of the pain and help you to get rid of it.

Hi, tooth ache can be caused due to deep decay or even gum related issues concerning the particular tooth. Pain killers can give you only temporary relief and not advisable to take for longer periods. Its better to consult your dentist and get the tooth treated as soon as possible. If the decay is extensive or if the tooth is damaged beyond the point of saving only then its advised to extract the particular tooth, otherwise its always better to save the tooth.

Tooth Removal - Really Required?

Teeth are one of the most precious parts of the human body. By playing a significant functional and structural role in aesthetics, facial appearance, and food habits, digestion and chewing, all efforts at maintaining them should be undertaken. As we all know, we have two sets of teeth, primary or deciduous and the permanent set. Let us discuss tooth removal in these two sets separately.

Primary Teeth
In the primary teeth, the main indication would be dental decay. If the tooth is severely damaged beyond repair with fillings, then removal could be an option, with two things considered. The primary successor will erupt within the next 6 months; if not, a space maintainer would be put in place.

Another reason would be if the tooth is beyond its lifecycle and is blocking the eruption of the successor, then it requires removal.

The permanent teeth, however, are a set that are meant to last for a lifetime and removal should be considered only as a last resort. With advances in dental treatment methods, gone are the days when removal would be an option for severe decay.

Some of the absolute indications for removal would be:

1. Wisdom teeth: if it is erupting in abnormal position (flattened or crooked), then removing them to avoid infection and impingement on other teeth needs to be considered. Wisdom teeth infection is one of the most common causes requiring tooth removal.

2. Recurrent infections: If a tooth has been root canal treated, but continues to have ongoing chronic infection, it could be a case for removal.

3. Malformed or supernumerary teeth: These may also block eruption of other teeth into the mouth.

4. Orthodontic treatment: In cases where the jaw size is really not sufficient to realign the mal-positioned or crooked teeth, the first premolar is often sacrificed, and this space is used to align the other teeth.

5. Injuries: In case of accidents or injuries with jaw fractures, teeth in the line of fracture may need to be removed.

6. Preparation for dentures: In cases of severe periodontal disease, where the mobility of the teeth is high and complete dentures are being considered as an option, teeth removal may be planned. Also, if there are teeth which are in the line of fixed partial dentures, again removal might be planned

7. Radiation therapy: For head and neck cancer patients, if there are teeth in the line of radiation, then removal might be planned.

Unlike in the earlier years, the absolute indications for removing tooth have changed. A thorough examination, both oral and radiological, should be done before zeroing on extraction.

Teeth pain may be due to various reasons like infection, sensitivity or trauma. If your teeth is decayed it is better to get it filled or treated by a dentist. If you are opting for root canal treatment do not forget to get a crown on the effected tooth. If you want to go for only medicinal treatment so let me tell you only medicine are not going to be very effective untill you get this treated by a dentist.

Cavity filled between my two front teeth is very distinct and looks bad hygienically. Recently few crack lines have also been observed in one of the tooth. What step should I take for that? I'm I facing any risk of losing them?

If filling is done badly then only such visible difference is seen. You can go for a newer more aesthetic composite filling or laminates or crown if very large cavity.

Soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices should be consumed in a limited quantity because they are acidic in nature. Acidic food or drinks often soften the tooth material which leads to the dissolution of minerals into the tooth enamel, resulting in cavities (holes)

Hi. Some times, depending on the degree of the tilt and the correction required, it can be managed by even using removable braces instead of fixed ones. So, visit your dentist and get it corrected.

Have been getting a fever (about 101) consulted a physician who said it was due to arthritis. Could you please advise me what could be the problem. Thank you.

Fever is due to some infection in the body. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need full mouth x ray (opg) first. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Goggle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

Brushing after every meal may help you by physically removing the debris or you have to stand infront of the mirror and remove the debris with a tooth pick, if you feel the tooth pick is too thick, make it thin with a blade and use it to clean the stuck debris. Still if you are not able to reach the area then seek the help of the dentist.

Medicine won't work. Most probably in your case it is due to teeth wear or cavity. See a dentist for permanent solution within a day. Please note if you ignore and problem increases I will later require treatment that will be much more expensive.
