I am a 22 year old female, last month only on the 2nd day of my period the flow got abnormally high for few hours, the following month, this month the periods were as normal but it got extended for a day or 2 with a minimum flow. My normal period lasts for around 6 days. Should I need to worry about anything? Are there any chances of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)?

MBBS, DGO, MD, Fellowship in Gynae Oncology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
For now there is no such symptom to worry about, this might happen sometimes because of stress or inadequate diet, hormonal imbalance etc. And corrected by lifestyle and diet measures. Still if you want you can get investigated to rule out any cause.

My sister is 19 years old but she didn't have periods. We took homeopathic medicine but nothing happened. Now after ultrasound, reports were showing that a rudimentary nodule of some mm was found instead of uterus. At last it was written rudimentary/ absent uterus.

DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), PGDHHM, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
if there is rudimentary uterus shown on ultrasound ,then first get MRI pelvis done to know the status of ovaries. the periods willnot come as uterus is absent. but has to see status of ovaries.

How Ayurveda can Help you with Postnatal Care

How Ayurveda can Help you with Postnatal Care

For a mother, the first few months after delivery are crucial since the uterus after expanding due to delivery, shrinks back to its normal size. Moreover the tendons, ligaments and muscles connected to the uterus begin to regain the power and strength lost during labor. A lot of emphasis is put on postnatal care in Ayurveda.

Ayurveda suggested diet tips:
According to your digestive system, you must take Sesame oil i.e. Til oil and ghee i.e. clarified butter after mixing it with panchkola. Once this mixture has been digested, you must consume rice gruel and milk that is medicated with Vidharigandhadi gana or panchkola. Apart from these, you must consume jaggery water for about a week. After a week, you must eat foods that are easily digestible to help you regain your strength.

Do's and Don'ts:
1. Do massage yourself with Vatahara Oil
2. Do bathe with warm water
3. Do keep your perineum and breasts clean
4. Do urinate every 5 hours
5. Do breastfeed properly
6. Don't consume food irregularly
7. Don't have stale or cold food
8. Don't retain urine or feces
9. Don't indulge in sex or exercise

Ayurvedic medicines and herbs:
All the medicines and herbs mentioned below are never advised together. An ayurvedic specialist will usually give you a combination of a few medicines depending on your symptoms and condition.
1. Dashamoolarishtam: Dashamoolarishtam is extremely effective in boosting your immunity and keeping infections at bay. It is usually prescribed for the first few months as it also helps reduce inflammation and pain.
2. Jeerakarishtam: Jeerakarishtam is well known for inducing normal lactation, and is usually prescribed to mothers during the monsoon or winter seasons. This is because it keeps the body warm owing to its hot nature.
3. Shatavari Gulam: Improve lactation and achieve overall hormonal balance by consuming Shatavari Gulam.
4. Pulileham: Pulileham is administered to new mothers from the third week onwards for about a month and half.
5. Shatavari: Shatavari herb is mixed with boiling milk to improve the production of breast milk and avoid post partum depression. It is also useful for normal involution of the uterus.
6. Musta: Apart from improving breast milk production, musta herbs also relieves clogs in milk ducts and inflammation.

Last night me and my girlfriend had oral sex, I fingered her and she's just 16, in the morning she's feeling some pain on left side little bit above from vagina, is it a serious problem?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fellowship in Infertility (IVF Specialist)
Gynaecologist, Aurangabad
Hi lybrate-user it could be due to local irritation or some infection. Please visit gynaecologist for internal examination to rule out infection. If is releived in 2-3 days then don't worry. But if persistent needs evaluation.

I am 22, years old. I m suffering from irregularity of menstrual periods. What's the reason of it?

DGO, MD, MRCOG, CCST, Accredation in Colposcopy
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
Usually hormonal imbalance. If you are overweight it would help to reduce weight. I would advice you a course of pills for three months like femilon and see if that helps.

Alzheimer's Disease: How It Affects The Body?

MCh, MBBS, MRCS (UK)

Alzheimer's Disease: How It Affects The Body?

Alzheimer's Disease is a neurological problem that is characterised by a cognitive decline and memory loss. It is a type of neurodegenerative dementia. The symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease include not being able to absorb and retain new information, lack of reasoning and judging, not being able to take on complex tasks, impaired visuospatial abilities, problems in reading, writing and speech, among many others. If a person has at least two of these symptoms in a debilitating manner, then the diagnosis can be made in favour of Alzheimer's Disease. The main causes of Alzheimer's are shrinkage of the brain size and death of the brain cells. The immune system is also said to trigger this neurodegenerative disease.

Let us find out what medical science has found so far:

  1. Connections: Many a times, in Alzheimer's disease, the memory and behaviour of the person changes because the brain is unable to make proper neural connections which can lead to memory loss of how a person behaved and the elements that formed the basis of the patient's cognition. Apparently, the immune system behaves in the same way within the brain and blocks the connection. This happens because there is constant communication between the brain and immune system along neurological lines, which is where the disease first emanates.
  2. Inflammation: The brain is prone to inflammation or swelling that is not the normal kind. This inflammation happens as a result of the activation of the infection fighting neurotransmitters and the chemical changes that happen in the brain when an infection strikes. The inflammation usually happens in the plaques or clumps which the brain tries to protect. These clumps are made up of a protein called Amyloid. The immune system is responsible for creating this inflammation in the brain of the patient.
  3. Pattern Recognition Receptors: Many of these receptors work in different manners and cooperate with each other to create a response in the brain. These PRRs can be found in the brain plaques, and they develop the signs of danger which further fuels the inflammation in the brain as a matter of protection.
  4. Activation of Cells Linked with the Immune System: When the PRRs begin to respond, it basically activates the immune system and the cells of the same. This is the basic reaction that causes the changes in brain which then leads to the attachment of the protein to the tissue that is diseased, in which case Alzheimer's Disease starts. The inflammation that we had spoken about earlier basically happens in the nervous tissue.

It is important to recognise and act on the initial signs of Alzheimer's Disease before it progresses beyond one's control. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurosurgeon.

It's great to lose weight and there is no problem trying to conceive while doing that. However heavy exercises and strict dieting should be sopped as soon as pregnancy is detected.

Hello sir, I am 19 years old, suffering from pcos disease and gaining weight so please give me a solution to get rid of it soon.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hi, thanks for the query. For a pcod condition there is no specific or special food. And it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the hormone levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Reduce your main meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar if having insulin resistance. Avoid junk foods. Weight gain is due to hormonal imbalance and stressed lifestyle. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out pills or medicines as you could upset the hormonal levels. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline. It's all about improving the hormonal vibrancy.

Hello lybrate-user 1. You have an active sex life with your partner and it shows that there is nothing to worry about future sex life. 2. Discharge of liquid from breasts while sexual arousal is very normal things, if its normal way, as its not paining, Pus formation or not have discharge without sexual arousal or involvement. 3. Discharge from vagina while sexual foreplay like kisses over the area is really good and normal, else its needed for next sexual act. 4. We can say that this is perfect and normal healthy sex life as you both have satisfaction form it.
