I feel extremely sleepy during afternoon and I don't sleep. Or try wake up before that sleep finishes. I end up having severe headache. I have my exams during that time only. I am unable to give my 100%in the exams. My brain is not working. Please help me know what my problem is. I am dreaming even during my exam. I sometimes feel that I have some mental problem. Dear , you do not have any mental problems. You are having stress disorder. You can't say you have presence of mind. You are sleeping in the afternoon and that is the cause of your head ache. My daughter suffers from schizophrenia age 39 she is functional but half the time she is lost in auditory hallucinations we had taken her to best psychiatrists but ultimately she is stuck with medication will her life be like this.

How To Deal With Someone Who Is Suffering From Depression

Depression is an addictive state, which is hard to get rid of. Everybody who suffers from it encounters it in an unexpected way, yet we all agree that it can be a major well-being issue. It makes a person miserable, disappointed, restless or numb for long and tedious timeframes, and is debilitating, particularly when you can't demonstrate your feelings and worries to anybody. It can meddle with your productivity and can become a concern not only in workplaces, but also in social circles.

So here's how to deal with a friend or family member in a depressed state of mind:

  1. Never Say 'You're Too Much': When someone with depression is told "you're too much," particularly by somebody near them, it can send them spiralling into blame and nervousness and bitterness. Being encouraging and empowering is likewise useful.
  2. Try not to Shame People for Being Negative: Dejection changes the world into a scene of pessimism. Discouraged individuals don't just focus on the negatives, but they also disregard the positives.
  3. Do Understand That Depression Doesn't Mean "Trouble": Melancholy is a condition with an assortment of side effects like exhaustion, confused mind state and rest issues. These are all side effects of melancholy. Crabbiness is an exceptionally basic side effect, which once in a while is encountered by many individuals, and can lead to an expanded sensitivity. Normally, it's difficult to be sympathetic with someone who is behaving grumpily. But you need to make a conscious effort to still see the positive in depressed individuals and lead them to hope.
  4. Do Validate: Approval can help manage a depressed state, and can wean a friend or family member out of depression. Remember that someone with dejection is not living in the same universe as you. The laws that oversee your universe don't exist in theirs.

Depressed individuals require your understanding, your empathy, and your affection,  considerably more when they are having a troublesome day, week or month. It is hard, but possible. Discouraged individuals value a positive backing in particular.

Hi sir I use to chew gutka for a long time what are the precautions should I take?

If it is Hans and gutkha products, they are both very dangerous. I am so glad that your intention is to quit these habits. There are no guarantees about stopping one’s addiction. But that does not mean we should not keep at it, over and over again until we succeed. Both are tobacco products and will therefore have addictive components to them. It may feel like you can’t stop but that it really not true. If you do not try, then it will never happen. You must try and try again until you succeed. The problem with addiction is that you have two products which are both conditioned to various events in your daily life and as such it will make it difficult but not impossible. You could work with an addiction counselor to help you process the rehabilitation. It is important to first find out about the ill-effects of tobacco use to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary and true. The nicotine in tobacco stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Nicotine also reduces the erectile capacity of your penis to hamper satisfying sex. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. You need to replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the tobacco drive reduces, substantially. Both will help but I am inclined to favor the gum because it is an oral habit and it will occupy the mouth just as though you were still chewing tobacco. When you want it will be easier to give up the gum. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-users for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit consuming Hans. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

M 27, I smoke once daily, m suffering from nose blockage, and my throat pains sometimes, nose block is a daily issue for me, I m not able to sleep in ac because my nose gets blocked.

Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, which can make cold symptoms worse drink lots of fluids such as water and clear soups. Fluids help loosen mucus. Fluids are also important because they help prevent dehydration. Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day to relieve a sore throat. Throat sprays or lozenges may also help relieve the pain. Avoid alcohol. Use saline (salt water) nose drops to help loosen mucus and moisten the tender skin in your nose.

Hi. Recently, I got an extreme panic attack. Like sharp fear and pain in chest and light numbness in face and hands. This left me exhausted for 1 whole day. Actually from past 1 year I am suffering from severe anxiety, fear and depression. I am getting treatment from past 5 months. First 3 months I used to take betacap 40 and nexito 10 mg. And from past 1 and half month I am taking prothiaden 25 instead of nexito. I used to feel anxious and fearful sometimes but never got a panic attack this extreme that to in middle of my treatment. Is something wrong with my treatment? Is anxiety disorder curable? Please help I'm depressed.

Hi there ~ Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Panic Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, Prevention, and Treatment A panic attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear. Your heart pounds and you can’t breathe. You may even feel like you’re dying or going crazy. Left untreated, panic attacks can lead to panic disorder and other problems. They may even cause you to withdraw from normal activities. But panic attacks can be cured and the sooner you seek help, the better. With treatment, you can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of panic and regain control of your life. Understanding panic attacks In many cases, panic attacks strike out of the blue, without any warning. Often, there is no clear reason for the attack. They may even occur when you’re relaxed or asleep. A panic attack may be a one-time occurrence, but many people experience repeat episodes. Recurrent panic attacks are often triggered by a specific situation, such as crossing a bridge or speaking in public—especially if that situation has caused a panic attack before. Usually, the panic-inducing situation is one in which you feel endangered and unable to escape. You may experience one or more panic attacks, yet be otherwise perfectly happy and healthy. Or your panic attacks may occur as part of another disorder, such as panic disorder, social phobia, or depression. Regardless of the cause, panic attacks are treatable. There are many effective treatments and coping strategies you can use to deal with the symptoms. Signs and symptoms of a panic attack Panic attacks often strike when you’re away from home, but they can happen anywhere and at any time. You may have one while you’re in a store shopping, walking down the street, driving in your car, or sitting on the couch at home. The signs and symptoms of a panic attack develop abruptly and usually reach their peak within 10 minutes. Most panic attacks end within 20 to 30 minutes, and they rarely last more than an hour. A full-blown panic attack includes a combination of the following signs and symptoms: Shortness of breath or hyperventilation Heart palpitations or a racing heart Chest pain or discomfort Trembling or shaking Choking feeling Feeling unreal or detached from your surroundings Sweating Nausea or upset stomach Feeling dizzy, light-headed, or faint Numbness or tingling sensations Hot or cold flashes Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy Is it a heart attack or a panic attack? Most of the symptoms of a panic attack are physical, and many times these symptoms are so severe that people think they’re having a heart attack. In fact, many people suffering from panic attacks make repeated trips to the doctor or the emergency room in an attempt to get treatment for what they believe is a life-threatening medical problem. While it’s important to rule out possible medical causes of symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, or difficulty breathing, it’s often panic that is overlooked as a potential cause—not the other way around. Signs and symptoms of panic disorder Many people experience panic attacks without further episodes or complications. There is little reason to worry if you’ve had just one or two panic attacks. However, some people who’ve experienced panic attacks go on to develop panic disorder. Panic disorder is characterized by repeated panic attacks, combined with major changes in behavior or persistent anxiety over having further attacks. Signs and symptoms of panic disorder You may be suffering from panic disorder if you: Experience frequent, unexpected panic attacks that aren’t tied to a specific situation Worry a lot about having another panic attack Are behaving differently because of the panic attacks, such as avoiding places where you’ve previously panicked While a single panic attack may only last a few minutes, the effects of the experience can leave a lasting imprint. If you have panic disorder, the recurrent panic attacks take an emotional toll. The memory of the intense fear and terror that you felt during the attacks can negatively impact your self-confidence and cause serious disruption to your everyday life. Eventually, this leads to the following panic disorder symptoms: Anticipatory anxiety – Instead of feeling relaxed and like yourself in between panic attacks, you feel anxious and tense. This anxiety stems from a fear of having future panic attacks. This “fear of fear” is present most of the time, and can be extremely disabling. Phobic avoidance – You begin to avoid certain situations or environments. This avoidance may be based on the belief that the situation you’re avoiding caused a previous panic attack. Or you may avoid places where escape would be difficult or help would be unavailable if you had a panic attack. Taken to its extreme, phobic avoidance becomes agoraphobia. Panic disorder with agoraphobia Agoraphobia was traditionally thought to involve a fear of public places and open spaces. However, it is now believed that agoraphobia develops as a complication of panic attacks. With agoraphobia, you’re afraid of having a panic attack in a situation where escape would be difficult or embarrassing. You may also be afraid of having a panic attack where you wouldn’t be able to get help. Because of these fears, you start avoiding more and more situations. For example, you might begin to avoid crowded places such as shopping malls or sports arenas. You might also avoid cars, airplanes, subways, and other forms of travel. In more severe cases, you might only feel safe at home. Situations or activities you may avoid if you have agoraphobia: Being far away from home Going anywhere without the company of a" safe" person Physical exertion (because of the belief that it could trigger a panic attack) Going to places where escape is not readily available (e. G. Restaurants, theaters, stores, public transportation) Driving Places where it would be embarrassing to have a panic attack, such as a social gathering Eating or drinking anything that could possibly provoke panic (such as alcohol, caffeine, or certain foods or medications) Adapted from: American Academy of Family Physicians Although agoraphobia can develop at any point, it usually appears within a year of your first recurrent panic attacks. Causes of panic attacks and panic disorder Although the exact causes of panic attacks and panic disorder are unclear, the tendency to have panic attacks runs in families. There also appears to be a connection with major life transitions such as graduating from college and entering the workplace, getting married, and having a baby. Severe stress, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or job loss can also trigger a panic attack. Panic attacks can also be caused by medical conditions and other physical causes. If you’re suffering from symptoms of panic, it’s important to see a doctor to rule out the following possibilities: Mitral valve prolapse, a minor cardiac problem that occurs when one of the heart’s valves doesn't close correctly. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) Stimulant use (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine) Medication withdrawal Treatment for panic attacks and panic disorder Panic attacks and panic disorder are treatable conditions. They can usually be treated successfully with self-help strategies or a series of therapy sessions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cognitive behavioral therapy is generally viewed as the most effective form of treatment for panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the thinking patterns and behaviors that are sustaining or triggering the panic attacks. It helps you look at your fears in a more realistic light. For example, if you had a panic attack while driving, what is the worst thing that would really happen? While you might have to pull over to the side of the road, you are not likely to crash your car or have a heart attack. Once you learn that nothing truly disastrous is going to happen, the experience of panic becomes less terrifying. Exposure therapy for panic attacks and panic disorder In exposure therapy for panic disorder, you are exposed to the physical sensations of panic in a safe and controlled environment, giving you the opportunity to learn healthier ways of coping. You may be asked to hyperventilate, shake your head from side to side, or hold your breath. These different exercises cause sensations similar to the symptoms of panic. With each exposure, you become less afraid of these internal bodily sensations and feel a greater sense of control over your panic. If you have agoraphobia, exposure to the situations you fear and avoid is also included in treatment. As in exposure therapy for specific phobias, you face the feared situation until the panic begins to go away. Through this experience, you learn that the situation isn’t harmful and that you have control over your emotions. Medication treatment for panic attacks and panic disorder Medication can be used to temporarily control or reduce some of the symptoms of panic disorder. However, it doesn't treat or resolve the problem. Medication can be useful in severe cases, but it should not be the only treatment pursued. Medication is most effective when combined with other treatments, such as therapy and lifestyle changes, that address the underlying causes of panic disorder. The medications used for panic attacks and panic disorder include: Antidepressants. It takes several weeks before they begin to work, so you have to take them continuously, not just during a panic attack. Benzodiazepines. These are anti-anxiety drugs that act very quickly (usually within 30 minutes to an hour). Taking them during a panic attack provides rapid relief of symptoms. However, benzodiazepines are highly addictive and have serious withdrawal symptoms, so they should be used with caution. Self-help tips for panic attacks and panic disorder When it comes to panic attacks, professional treatment and therapy can make a big difference. But there are many things you can do to help yourself, too: Learn about panic. Simply knowing more about panic can go a long way towards relieving your distress. So read up on anxiety, panic disorder, and the fight-or-flight response experienced during a panic attack. You’ll learn that the sensations and feelings you have when you panic are normal and that you aren’t going crazy. Avoid smoking and caffeine. Smoking and caffeine can provoke panic attacks in people who are susceptible. As a result, it’s wise to avoid cigarettes, coffee, and other caffeinated beverages. Also be careful with medications that contain stimulants, such as diet pills and non-drowsy cold medications. Learn how to control your breathing. Hyperventilation brings on many sensations (such as lightheadedness and tightness of the chest) that occur during a panic attack. Deep breathing, on the other hand, can relieve the symptoms of panic. By learning to control your breathing, you develop a coping skill that you can use to calm yourself down when you begin to feel anxious. If you know how to control your breathing, you are also less likely to create the very sensations that you are afraid of. Practice relaxation techniques. When practiced regularly, activities such as yoga, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation strengthen the body’s relaxation response—the opposite of the stress response involved in anxiety and panic. And not only do these relaxation practices promote relaxation, but they also increase feelings of joy and equanimity. So make time for them in your daily routine.

Am 40 female having the problems like getting tense on minor issues, or feel sometime very low and feel like crying, can't concentrate on NY studies, it seems as am unable to understand a single word from a book, and Forget whatever I study for exams, it seems as if my memory is getting fade day by day. I guess i am suffering from depression. My work is suffering as i tend to take off frm office every now n then and all i do at home is sleep. Often i cry as i feel upset without any reason. I have a good job and life just facing some troubles in love life though oj thinking i dont find them that big. I do self counselling it do works but not for long time. I try going out and being with people as much as possible to feel happy. Dont know what else to do

You seem to be stressed out about some past issues. Self counselling doesn't help much if you are not self aware. Visit a professional counsellor who will help you to gain self awareness and insights into your problems and behaviour patterns. Trouble in love life is a good enough reason to feel depressed but that doesn't mean that you can't deal with it or cope effectively.

You can eat raw carrots at any time for maximum benefits. These foods are also good for your brain: MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week For your sleep problem, it looks like you are under some stress and you can follow the suggestions given below: In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep. Meet a counselor if these techniques do not give you the desired result.

Death is inevitable in human life, no doubt it is painful but one has to accept this reality. There is no point in remain in grief and keeping away from others, this will make you mentally weak. Be happy and remain in good relatives, friends company. Do some yoga and meditation, visit near by religious place to get mental peace. Time is god a great healer, every thing will be alright, wait and watch with calm and cool mind.

Dear lybrate-user, it is not proved that smoking causes tb but it definitely weakens your chest and may lead to many chest problems and even tb if already there may be aggravated.

I want to study till late hours for my board exams preparation. Please give me some tips on how can I study for a long time?

It is not the best time for long study because you will deprive yourself of sleep which can cause a lot of other complications apart from loss of memory. Some people have gotten used to night study and it may be, for some only, suitable. So even if you still want to do late study have a very light dinner of proteins, catch an afternoon nap of not more than 45 minutes, having proper lighting so that you do not strain your eyes, drink black coffee or tea, if you feel drowsy (though I prefer that you sleep if you do feel slumber catching up with you), study by writing whenever sleepiness overcomes you, and do not study lying down in yoru bed, ever. A cold shower will also awaken you and if need be some exercise will help too. Short duration for each subject will make it easier to spend long duration of night study. Do not deprive yourself of sleep for a long period of days.

I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to handle fear, to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. Issues that crop at this time may be coming up from childhood experiences that were not dealt with adequately. Take your parents along and meet with a counselor to identify these influences and sort them out. This is the last time they will come up looking for a resolution and if not dealt with, you will suffer a permanent negative feature around fear that will get worse over time. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. Eat healthily, sleep well and deal with your emotions. Yoga and meditation will help tremendously. You may also Google EFT (emotional freedom technique), and learn of a very effective tool to sort out your anxiety.
