Arthritis is painful inflammation of the joints caused by excessive amounts of uric acid in the blood. This causes friction in the joints and may cause inflammation among muscle tissues. This is a very painful condition and may even be debilitating for many people. One of the methods used to provide relief from arthritis pain is the hot and cold therapy. Let’s have a look at it in detail.

How does hot and cold treatment work’s?

The hot and cold treatments work on various joints or muscle areas and are very effective in lowering pain as well as providing more mobility to the affected areas. Both these therapies try to enable the healing forces within the body and hence improve on the conditions which cause arthritis pain.

Heat treatment therapy: Heat therapy uses the principle of the expansion of material when warmer. If heat is applied to an affected area, it dilates the blood vessels, improves and stimulates blood circulation and also reduces muscle spasms. Heat treatments are very effective in soothing stiff joints and tired muscles as they encourage the flow of blood to the areas being treated. Some of the options available for heat treatments would be:

1. Heats patches that are disposable

2. Heating belts made for specific parts of the body

3. Moist heating pads

4. Simple hot water in a tub

5. Paraffin wax and Mineral oil

6. Hot oil massages

7. Warms showers or baths

8. Warmed towels or clothes used as a hot compress

Cold treatment therapy: Cold uses the very opposite principle of heat therapy to provide pain relief to arthritis patients. Cold has the properties of being able to constrict blood vessels and slow the flow of blood, thus resulting in numbing the area and reducing pain. Cold treatment is also very effective in reducing swelling as it can fight inflammation very effectively. It is mostly useful in cases of acute and chronic pain and is a very good pain reliever. Some of the options available for cold treatments would be:

1. Cold compress by using ice in a waterproof bag with a towel covering it to protect the skin.

2. Buying a medically manufactured ice pack or bag

3. Buying ice gel packs from the medical store which can be frozen and then used

4. Making ice packs at home by mixing water with rubbing alcohol and then freezing it

5. Taking ice bath by pouring ice into the bath tub.

My mom has a gap in one of her knee she walks little twisted whenever she takes a stair case & has pain in both of her knees its been more thn 2 years now.

My wife is having knee pain in right leg for some days. Rubbing pain relief gel but is gives relief for some hours only. She is 50 is does not get periods from last two years. Please suggest.

Hi looking to the age of your wife the knee pain could b because of arthritis nd as she doesnot get periods so she must be having osteoporosis also. So she need to take calcium along with vit d for osteoporosis. And for arthritis you can take some medicines for which you need to consult me privately. And if the arthritis is sever than you have to undergo knee replacement.

I have injured last week during playing. And my knee is paining too much. So what can I do in future for good fitness.

Respected sir, I am 35 years old, and I have pain problem in back and in knees. And one more thing is that I when I come from outstation then there is big pain in my head and then vomiting and after some time I get relief from my head pain if more then I go to doctor then they give me injection and I get relief, they tell me this is due to food those I have eat out of station. Hi, for back acke and knee pain you can take tab muscalt forte 2-0-2, tab kanchnar gugglu 2-0-2 and for you stomach upset yes definitely you r traveling and outside food you can take madiphala rasayam 2tsp-0-2tsp before food you can consult me further if the need be.

My mom age 48 weight 65 she has rhemutoartharitist since past 6 years she tried everything to be get cure. She has Ra+ and uric acid level is also high. She tried homeopathy homeopathy allopathy. at this age it would be due to arthritis. Avoid sitting on the floor and squatting. Reguar quadriceps strengthening exercises can help. if the pain persists and xrays show severe arthritis then knee replacement can be done as a last resort

Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Hi thanks for your query. I am dr akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. That' s not good to hear, but you can do following things: 1) to turn in bed every 2 hours and not allow pressure to stay at one particular point for a long time 2) use of air mattress at home 3) high protein diet 4) there is a dressing which comes from smith & nephew which is very useful for this. Take tab. sinarest it contains ( Acetaminophen+ Pseudoephedrine+ chlorpheniramine). Acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine, and pseudoephedrine is a combination medicine for throat infection and treat headache, fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and sinus congestion caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu. Do gargle with warm water thrice a day. Drink warm water also. Take plenty of water, liquid diet, dalia, green veg., orange. avoid cold things, avoid cold drinks. Avoid Oily foods. If symptoms are from more days or again persist then do few tests for confirm causes of it.. i.e. CBC. welcome in lybrate.

Rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed in dec15 and allopathy treatment was started with suitable medicines then. But considering the treatment of 1.5years shifted to ayurvedic treatment from jodhur ayurvedic University karwar but pains have started frequently almost daily and RA factor rising from 115 to 149. Should I continue ayurvedic for my wife or shift to allopathy.

Dear lybrate-user, namaskar, you should not leave allopathic treatment at all. However you may continue ayurvedic treatment at the same time. Because no pathy could claim cure of ra. This disease may need a life long treatment. Take care.

May right knee feel pain. Visit a doctor. Also done mri. Doctor told ligament is very thin and weak. He suggest only a sachet collaflex pro. I do not walk on staircase. Please suggest.

Also start with quadriceps drill for which you can meet a physio. I think the doctor is talking about your cartilage not ligaments.

My mother aged 70 years suffering with knee pain from last 4 yrs. Her x-ray shows degenerative osteo-arthritis change in both knee joint. Presently she is taking tab. Diclogetic, panspeed-40, hemitrol kit, mavistin-250mg, joincerin & inj. Dm in both knee from last six months but pain & stuff in joint knee still persist. Her medical report as follows: hb-12.4, tc: 11, 800, esr-20, t3-1.32, t4-8.6, tsh-1.46, sub-5.27 I shall be thankful if you suggest some medicines for her treatment. Whether tab. Neucoxia may be given to her during the excess pain or not.

How to Stop Knee Pain With Strengthening Exercises

The knee is one of the largest and most important joints of our body. It is also susceptible to wear and tear as well as injuries. Knee pain can occur due to a variety of reasons starting from conditions like arthritis problem and osteoporosis as well as injuries that can affect the ligaments, the joint, the menisci and femur. These are the various parts of the knees, which can suffer from degeneration or even injuries. The best way to combat chronic knee pain is through rest, ice compress and with the help of pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medication. 

While rest and ice compress for chronic knee pain and pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medication are the best ways to combat knee pain, orthopaedics also recommend the use of various strengthening exercises which can alleviate knee pain. Here are a few of the best ones!

  1. The Towel Hook: Lie down flat on your back and raise one leg, Hook a towel under the foot and press it against the towel as you pull both ends downwards, creating slight pressure. This can be done for a few seconds at a time. Remember to do this at least ten times for each foot and increase gradually. This exercise helps in strengthening your entire leg from the calf to the knee and even the thighs so that the pain subsides.
  2. Towel Roll: In towel roll exercise, after pushing knee, should do dorsiflexion and hold for 20 seconds.. Hamstring exercises are also given by placing roll towel under your feet, push down, dorsiflexion and hold for 20 seconds Adductor exercises are also given by placing small ball between your legs just above the knee joint, press and hold for 20seconds.
  3. Swing: For this exercise, you will need to sit down on a chair. Now take one leg and swing it up until it is in line with your hip. Hold it out like this before you slowly bring it down again. Do this at least twenty to thirty times for each leg and gradually increase the frequency and the number of seconds for which you hold the knee. This will also help in pain management.
  4. Knee Marches: You can also do knee marches by sitting down on a chair. You will need to march each knee up and down at least twenty to thirty times. You will need to do this for a few minutes every day and you can easily do it twice a day even when you are at work, sitting in front of a desk. You must ensure that your posture is straight and upright for this exercise.

* walking regularly at slow pace without unduly straining helps as it improves blood circulation around knee and eases the joint. *you can use mustard oil for massage which is good in winter season for relieving pain. Eucalyptus oil is also good homoeopathy has a good treatment for this without adverse effects. Take bryonia 200---twice daily morning and evening and give feedback after 7 days

My knees are paning while I am using stair. What is the reason behind these. Is this vitamin d3 deficiency.

You did not tell your height. Vitamin d3 deficiency can be a reason for this pain. Besides if you are overweight then this can also be a reason. If there is any history of injury on your knee it can also be a reason get your serum calcium, vitamin d3 an serum iron and ra factor checked. Hope it ll help you.
