Hi. Thankyou for the query. Rice khichdi with dal vegetables and pure ghee is healthy. Don't worry about fruits. Slowly the eating will change. Don't force feed. You could try to give fruits in different forms like milk shakes or custrads or fruit sheera or fruit lollys etc.

Hi sir I have a 4 month old daughter who is suffering from hydrocephalus what are the treatment and where it possible.
If tbe immediate neonatal period wss uneventful, it is more likely to be a congenital hydrocephalus. As the bairn is growing fast in this age. Hydrocephalus needs immediate surgical correction by a ventriculo peritoneal shunt.

She is taking milk from bottle since birth. She was properly sucking the bottle's nipple. But as she turned 1. She started holding bottle by herself and slowly stopped sucking the bottle's nipple. Now the stage is. She holds the bottle for 1 hour in her mouth and doesn't drinks even 30 ml of milk from that bottle. How should I again train her to suck the nipple. Please help.

Bottle feeding is not advisable at any age. Stop bottle feed rather to train her for bottle feeding. She is 1 year old. She can drink milk from gilas (tumbler). I hope she must have started complementary solids in her diet.

Taking kids to the dentist is necessary to keep their teeth healthy and promote excellent oral hygiene habits. But from a child's point of view, a trip to the dentist can be a scary event -- lying on a chair in an unfamiliar room filled with unfamiliar noises and objects, all while a stranger is poking cold, metallic, and unusual instruments in his mouth. Plus, as your child's teeth continue to fall out and grow, he may take at least 10 trips to the dentist before starting kindergarten. To help ease future visits for your child (and for the dentist!), follow these steps so that he will feel comfortable and more relaxed.

I am a mother of 2 months old baby and my milk supply is low. I started taking lactare tablets. initially I was taking 2 tablets daily, but now its not enough for me so I started taking 2 tablets twice daily. Is it safe? Will it harm my baby? How long I could take this tablet? Will my supply get improved?

Hi, you can take two tablets 3 times day. It is herbal- contains asparagus, fenugreek and ashwagandha mostly. You can continue till you are breastfeeding-will not affect your baby. You should also take plenty of fluids- up to 2 litres daily.

Breastfeed And Its Importance

How Long To Breastfeed To Get Benefits?

There is no fixed duration to breastfeed. When considering the duration you wish to feed your baby, do take note of the following points:

Exclusive till six months: Pediatric and medical experts throughout the globe recommend exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and then breastfeeding in combination with solid food for up to 12 months.
Continue after 12 months: The AAP recommends breastfeeding beyond the first birthday and encourages mothers to do so. A toddler may get most of his nutrition from solid food, but he still enjoys added benefits of breastmilk that contains unique substances such as antibodies.

Can extend to two years and beyond: The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends breastfeeding up to two years and even beyond if the mother and toddler wish to do so. WHO states that breastmilk is a “natural food”. Even when the baby is a year-and-a-half old, breastmilk is capable of providing a third of the toddler’s nutritional requirements.

What Are The Benefits Of Breastfeeding For The Mother?
Here are some scientifically proven benefits of breastfeeding a baby.

Health benefits:
While your baby benefits from the breastmilk, you gain health advantages as well.

  • Quick postpartum recovery: Mothers who breast-feed recover faster post-delivery even if it is a Cesarean-section. It happens because suckling of the nipples releases the hormone oxytocin, which speeds the recovery of the uterus, letting it regain its original shape.
  • Breastfeeding can help you lose pregnancy fat: Producing milk uses additional calories that body sources from the body fat accumulated during pregnancy. It means, mothers, who exclusively breastfeed, tend to return to their pre-pregnancy shape and weight faster.
  • Lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers: The chances of getting breast and ovarian cancers are lower in women who breastfeed. Researchers found that a woman can reduce her risk of breast cancer by 50% if she breastfed for two years in life. Other studies noted a reduced chance of having ovarian cancer if the mother breastfed at least for a year. These benefits last a lifetime thus making breastfeeding a form of natural health insurance for a woman.
  • Lowers the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes: Extensive research has proven that when you breastfeed, you invariably reduce the chance of developing hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, and type 2 diabetes.

My daughter is about 4 years old. She is around 10 kg in weight. I am giving her aptivate syrup for appetite but she in very loose in hunger. Please suggest what to do.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
your daughter is grossely undernourished (ideal weight at 4 yrs is 16 kg). She does not reqiure any appetite stimulants but sufficient diet given at frequent intervals in gradually increasing quantities.Appetite is a natural reflex in body stimulated by body requrements, but it is diminished in sickness & chronic malnutrition. She will improve if you feed her regular intervals in gradually increasing amounts. It may take around 6 months to catch up.Make sure she is not having any chronic illness.
