Ichthyosis - Homeopathic Treatment For It!

The skin is one the largest organs in the human body and is also one of the most affected parts. Ichthyosis is one such condition, which is a term given to a set of about 28 types of hereditary skin conditions. The common factor among all these is the scaly, dry, flaky skin which is where the name comes from (fish-like skin). The affected person’s skin resembles that of fish scales. The most common type if ichthyosis vulgaris. Since it is hereditary, it often begins in early childhood and continues through life.

Therefore, in addition to treating the condition, most affected people learn to modify lifestyle and skin care routines to ensure the condition is not aggravated.

  • Avoid hot baths or showers which will dry the skin out further
  • Use lukewarm or cool water for the bath
  • Avoid soap which can further dry the skin
  • Use Cetaphil lotion and cream which are available over the counter
  • Do not pat dry the skin with a towel.
  • Gently blot the skin and apply alpha-hydroxyl acid lotion, which can improve skin moisture content
  • If possible, consider living in a temperate climate

There is no cure for this condition, but ichthyosis can be managed with these above measures. In addition, even homoeopathy does not offer any particular cure, but there are some effective remedies which help the patients manage their symptoms better. Arsenic and Arnica have been shown to improve the symptoms but not well proven yet.

The right homoeopathy product would be prescribed based on
It is a life-long condition which can be managed or controlled in the best manner with homoeopathy. The scaling of the skin can be delayed with the use of homoeopathic medicines. This can reduce the dryness, cracking, and peeling off of the skin. The excess buildup of the scales on the skin can be reduced with homoeopathy medicines like mother tincture. The associated symptoms need to be assessed in people presenting with scaly skin.

  • Skin and scalp are affected, there are dry scales
  • Skin on the face is affected, scaly skin with whiskers
  • Skin on the chest is affected with scaly skin between the breasts

Overall skin is very dry
Outbreak on the skin, which are dry, crusty, rough, peeling off of the scales; or present as a combination of these. There are some homoeopaths who try remedies to improve the moisture content in the skin. However, if the patient does not respond to the treatment or show improvement in the symptoms, the treatment may be discontinued. If there are any signs of improvement of the symptoms, it can be continued for life as the condition also persists for life. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.

Most probably you might have developed the fistula, there is no role of antibiotic in it. You must go to the colorectal expert for proper diagnosis.

I want to use 0.5 mm derma roller at home. Can I use it by myself or I should consult a dermatologist first before using it?

Hello, Dermaroller can be done at home but effect of 0.5 mm on face is minimal. Also microneedling is a better option than dermaroller as it causes some skin damage due to oblique skin entry. Better to get it done with dermatologist with numbing cream and sterile environment.

Hello, lybrate-user to get rid of blackheads just use good quality scrub once in a week. And wash your face with water atleast two to three times a day so that oil secreation will be reduced so black head formation rate will become low.

Colorectal Surgery: What Should You Know About It?

MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Guwahati
Colorectal Surgery: What Should You Know About It?

Colorectal surgery deals with the disorders of the rectum, anus and colon. Another name of colon is ‘large intestine’. These three body parts form the last stages of the digestive process. When the human waste passes through the colon, its salt and water are extracted before it exits the body as human excreta.

Colorectal disorders

  1. Swelling and inflammation of the veins in the anus (also called as Haemorrhoids)
  2. Anal fissures- unnatural cracks and fissures in the anal area
  3. Fistulas or the unnatural connections between the anus and other anorectal areas
  4. Conditions of constipation
  5. Incontinence in passing of faeces
  6. When the walls of the rectum protrude through the anus- also called as Rectal prolapse
  7. Birth defects such as imperforate anus
  8. Anal cancer- this condition is rare
  9. Colorectal cancer- cancer of colon and rectum
  10. Any injuries to the anus
  11. Removal of any objects inserted into the anus

Bowel habits after colorectal surgery
Many patients report cases of diarrhoea, leakage of stool or gas, urgency to use the toilet and a feeling of insufficient evacuation of faeces. Relax; these conditions are not going to last forever. Your rectum and anus are adjusting to new conditions after this surgery. These organs may take six to twelve months to adjust to new bowel habits.

Is there a need to take a laxative or stool softener?
There is no need to take laxatives after a colorectal surgery. Drink lots of water to make your stool softer and easy to pass. If there is a water deficiency in your body, then it may lead to your faeces becoming hard. In that case, take milk of magnesium, colace etc.

Activities post surgery
You can continue with your normal schedule after this surgical procedure. Carry on running, jogging, exercising, climbing up the stairs etc. even after your surgery. Gastroenterologists recommend that patients should desist from lifting loads weighing more than 10 pounds so that there are no post surgery complications.

Diet after colorectal surgery
Avoid spicy and heavy to digest meals after your surgery. Once the intestines begin working normally, you can continue having your spicy food. Chew your food well to aid its digestion.

Returning to work after colorectal surgery
Most people are back to their work after taking a break of 2-5 days. If the surgery is pretty detailed, you may have to take a break of up to a month. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery may have to take a rest of 2- 4 weeks before they report back to work. Take it easy before slipping into your regular schedule. If working hurts after your surgery, don’t do it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Surgeon.
