Acute Respiratory Infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
Acute Respiratory Infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Recent years have witnessed the severity of acute respiratory infections. The main cause is exposure to more of respiratory Infection causing microorganisms. Everyone is at a high risk of exposure. The infections can affect all age groups equally. Therefore, you must know all about acute respiratory infections.

Acute respiratory infections may interfere in normal breathing. The infection often starts as a viral infection in the nose, trachea (windpipe) or in the lungs. In cases of non treatment, the infection spreads to the entire respiratory system. The infections are transmissible.

Causes:
There are many respiratory infections of which causes are unknown. However, a few known viral causes are as follows:

  1. Adenoviruses: These viruses are known to have over 50 different types of viruses causing common cold, bronchitis as well as pneumonia.
  2. Rhinoviruses: These viruses cause common cold. Those individuals, be it young or old, who have a weak immune system can have an acute respiratory infection.
  3. Influenza virus: This is also known as Orthomyxovirus with six types of viruses, such as Type A, B and C, Isa Virus, Thogoto Virus and Coronavirus. Out of these, Type A is known to cause a severe disease.
  4. Enterovirus: This virus is associated with several human and mammalian diseases, including acute respiratory infection.
  5. Respiratory syncytial virus: This virus causes respiratory tract infections in the lower respiratory tract.

Bacterial causes are as follows:

  • Bacillus anthracis
  • Bordetella pertussis
  • Corynebacterium diphtheria
  • Pneumococcus: It is a cause of meningitis and Pneumonia.
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Haemophilus influenzae

Symptoms:
Few of the prominent symptoms are as follows:

  1. Itchy, watery eyes - Soreness behind eyes and often conjunctivitis
  2. Nasal discharge and congestion
  3. Sneezing
  4. Having Sore throat
  5. Coughing
  6. Severe Headache
  7. Fever
  8. Malaise
  9. Fatigue
  10. Muscle pain
  11. Diagnosis

The first thing that the doctor tends to check is the breathing pattern of the patient, followed by a number of checks:

  1. Fluid and inflammation in the lungs
  2. Nose and throat checks
  3. X-ray or CT scan would be required to check the condition of the lungs in advanced cases

There could be complications such as respiratory failure, respiratory arrest or congestive heart failure

Treatment:
Ideally for viruses, there isn't any cure. Medications that are prescribed are for the symptoms.

  1. Cautious use of antibiotics for the symptoms can reduce adverse effects as well as decrease costs. It will also reduce drug resistance.
  2. A single oral dose of nasal decongestant used in common cold could be moderately effective to aid congestion in grown-ups for a short period.
  3. Alternate medications, such as the use of vitamin C help in the inhibition and cure of upper respiratory infections.

Prevention:

  1. Probiotics and vaccination are available for certain infections such as URTIs, Adenoviruses and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  2. Best prevention is to boost your immune system. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated? What exactly is a spine block injection? Will it work long-term for low back pain due to disc problems? What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

Depends on what medicine you are taking. But generally there are no long term effects of adhd medicines. Atomoxetin can effect liver function tests but it is reversible on stopping the medicine. Methylphenidate is safe and has no long term effects. Regarding spine block injections kindly discuss with an orthopedic surgeon.

What Is Bronchitis?

BHMS, Diploma in Dermatology
Sexologist, Hyderabad
What Is Bronchitis?

What is Bronchitis?

A cold or the flu runs its course in a couple weeks if you’re lucky. After that, you’re back to normal. But sometimes you may get bronchitis, too.

That’s when your bronchial tubes, which carry air to your lungs, get infected and swollen. You end up with a nagging cough and a lot more mucus.

Types:

-Acute bronchitis: This is the more common one. Symptoms last for a few weeks, but it doesn’t usually cause any problems past that.
-Chronic bronchitis: This one is more serious, in that it keeps coming back or doesn’t go away at all. It’s one of the conditions that make up what's called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Causes:

  1. Most often, the same viruses that give you a cold or the flu also cause bronchitis. Sometimes, though, bacteria are to blame.

  2. In both cases, as your body fights off the germs, your bronchial tubes swell and make more mucus. That means you have smaller openings for air to flow, which can make it harder to breathe.

  3. If any of these things describe your situation, you have a bigger chance of getting bronchitis:

  4. You have a weaker immune system. This is sometimes the case for older adults and people with ongoing diseases, as well as for babies and young children. Even a cold can make it more likely since your body’s already busy fighting off those germs.

  5. You smoke or live with a smoker.

  6. You work around substances that bother your lungs, such as chemical fumes or dust. (Examples: coal mining, working around farm animals).

  7. You live in or travel to a place with poor air quality or lots of pollution.

Symptoms:

-Cough and production of mucous or sputum are the two most common symptoms of bronchitis.
-Due to excess production of mucous within the bronchial tubes, the cough reflex is induced in a bid to get rid of the mucous. The mucous is usually whitish in colour.
-Often patients feel shortness of breath. This shortness of breath is aggravated on any physical activity like walking, running or climbing stairs.
-There may be wheezing in the chest while breathing. A sensation of tightness or heaviness in the chest may be felt.
-Exercising or running or climbing stairs is often difficult as the compromised lungs are unable to meet the increased requirements of oxygen.

Diagnosis:

Your doctor usually can tell whether you have bronchitis based on a physical exam and your symptoms. She’ll ask questions about your cough, such as how long you’ve had it and what kind of mucus comes up with it. She’ll also listen to your lungs to see whether anything sounds wrong, like wheezing.

That’s usually it, but in some cases, your doctor may:

-Check the oxygen levels in your blood. This is done with a sensor that goes on your toe or finger.
-Do a lung function test. You’ll breathe into a device called a spirometer to test for emphysema (a type of COPD in which air sacs in your lungs thin out and are destroyed) and asthma.
-Give you a chest X-ray. This is to check for pneumonia or another illness that could cause your cough
-Order blood tests.
-Test your mucus to rule out diseases caused by bacteria. One of these is whooping cough, which is also called pertussis. It causes violent coughing that makes it hard to breathe. If your doctor suspects this or suspects the flu she'll also take a nasal swab.

Role of Homeopathy In Bronchitis:

When it comes to treating bronchitis, Homeopathy is very effective. In fact, it is the most promising system of medicine for the treatment of bronchitis. Here one must mention that the preventable or avoidable causes of bronchitis should be and must be removed. It is very important that one should stop smoking if the patient is suffering from bronchitis. Any sort of pollution should also be avoided. In homeopathy, I have seen pretty severe cases of bronchitis getting cured.

Diet and Non-Diet Food:

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You can also eat meats low in fat, chicken, fish, and low-fat or nonfat dairy.

Get a urine routine micro investigation to rule out any urinary bleeds. If the baby is asymptomatic then you can wait and watch for another day. If the baby cries during urination or has fever, cries irrtiable then get the investigations of urine and blood as soon as possible with a sonography. Kindly meet your pediatrician for further managment.

As far as possible you should try to breastfeed. If not at all possible you can give top feeds with cup and spoon. Bottle feeding has got many side effects. If you want to stick on to bottle feeding you must boil bottle at least for 15 minutes before each feed.
