Tonsillopharyngitis since 20 days. Medications taken: Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid taken for 5 days BD next course ZOCEF CV 500 BD for 8 days levocetirizine 5 mg OD at night from last 15 days And Betadine gargle thrice a day (Both levo and gargle, I stopped 3 days earlier.) Yet I can see vesicles on my Thorat. What should be my management now?

MBBS, M.S. General Surgery
Podiatrist, Kochi
If after taking antibiotics for 13 days, and doing betadine gargle 3 times a day, still you can see vesicles in the throat, you need to take a swab for bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity, and take culture specific antibiotics. Please consult an ENT surgeon who will do the needful in this regard.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Early symptoms of smoking r dryness throat. It is a natural phenomenon. If you want to get rid of this problem then slowly try to quit this habit nd try with applying glycerine with johnson bud on the back part of your tongue at bedtime. It will relieve you somebut.

I am suffering from sinusitis. Is it safe to administrate xylometazoline solution for a long period. Kindly reply.

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Ahmedabad
It is definitely not advisable to use xylomatazoline for more than 3 to 5 days. It will definitely give excellent immediate relief for short period but it increases swelling inside nose and worsens sinusitis.

All About Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Delhi
All About Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is among the common causes of vertigo. It is the sudden sensation of the spinning of your head which occurs with the change of position of your head. It is a disorder of the inner ear. It occurs when calcium carbonate crystals accumulate in large numbers in any one of the ear canals and stimulate abnormal fluid movement in the inner ear. This sends false signals of head movement to the brain. This can also crop up post head injury. Rolling over the bed or quick head movements like when sitting up in bed can also trigger this condition.

The common symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are as follows:

  1. Vomiting and nausea
  2. Vertigo blurred vision
  3. Intense dizziness
  4. Loss of balance

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo may be treated in the following manner:

  1. Medication to get relief from the spinning of your head.
  2. Epley's Maneuver involves transportation of the calcium particles to a different part of the ear which will no longer cause any problems.
  3. Brandt-Daroff exercises.
  4. Sometimes watchful waiting can help a person to recover without having to undergo any other treatment but it is a long process and often involves risk factors.
  5. Surgery: This option is used rarely when other treatments fail.

A very important thing to remember is that vertigo can lead to falls and driving should be avoided. The patient will need support during an episode to avoid injuries. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ENT specialist.

I am 49 years obese person having ht. 5'9" and wt. 103 kg. Fat deposited primarily around neck and belly. I am suffering from the problem of snorring, even while travelling in day time. Another person cannot sleep and even travel with me. Pl. Suggest- 1. How I can rid off from snorring. 2. How can I reduce my weight. Regards

MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Rajkot
It may be due to overweight, nasal blockage, low soft palate or enlarged tonsils. So for proper diagnosis you are requested to send photos of nose and throat as shown on entrajkot. Blogspot. Com. Mostly people having snoring, have also sleep apnea, so you must go for a test called sleep study, by which we can diagnose a disease called sleep apnea send me the report of sleep study, so I can guide you further. You must consult dietician and also do walking and some exercise to reduce weight.

What is the reason for infection on parotid gland? How we can cure and prevent this?

MBBS, M.S. (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Pune
Hi. Thank you for your query. 1. Parotid gland infections can arise due to viral, bacterial (dental), infections, decreased immunity, autoimmune diseases, blockage or stricture of the ducts and so on. 2. Get a USG Neck done to confirm the diagnosis. MRI dialogs physical is useful in recurrent cases. 3. Medication can help decrease the infection. 4. Salendoscopy is a new option. Regards.

HI Bharat, No, there is no natural way to cure a ranula. Ranula is a type of mucocele present on the floor of the mouth. It is present due to the collection of mucin from ruptured salivary gland caused by local trauma. Its best treatment is surgical removal.

When I lean down my nose starts bleeding. Frequently. But not always. Consulted an e. N. T, suggested plain ct scan of paranasal sinuses. Findings are 1) nasal septum deviated to right 2) hypertrophied bilateral inferior turbinates wih edematous nasal mucosa s/o sinonasal inflammatory disease all other things are noted normal in d report. Can anyone one tell me what does this mean? do I have sinus. But I do not have cold or something. But sometimes blockage of one hole sometimes other. But no breathing trouble.

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
The ct scan indicates a deviated nasal septum. That could account for the nasal blockage. If the bleeding is from the right side, it could account for the bleeding as well. Because you get frequent nose bleeds, your next step should be to undergo a nasal endoscopy followed by cauterization of the bleeder if possible. Regards.
