My sister is pregnant, what are tips that she would follow to give birth to active, brilliant, color baby.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Ludhiana
Hi, character of baby depends on genes he/she get from parents but whatever mother eats & does also affects her baby. So mother must take care of her health both physical as well as mental. She must have healthy diet, sound sleep, stress free life, a disciplined cheerful life, do regular light exercise and meditation so har child will devlop good habits in the womb. Also she should take prenatal medicaction prescribed by her doctor, these are a great help for baby's development.

If a poison reaches its expiry date, would it be more poisonous or less poisonous?
Hello, its difficult to say though the efficacy would diminish but it will not be lost so a poison would still remain a prison even after expiry.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - Can STDs be the Reason Behind it?

MBBS, DGO, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MRCOG
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - Can STDs be the Reason Behind it?

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, also known as PID, is characterized by an infection that occurs in a lady's reproductive organs. Usually this occurs as a result of a complications arising from a STD. The disease causes severe damage to the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. It is one of the bigger causes of infertility in women.

Causes-

The cervix which is the entry to the uterus has the function of stopping bacteria that are present in the vagina from spreading to the other organs. Once infected by a STD, the cervix can no longer perform its function of preventing the bacteria from spreading to other organs. PID develops when the infection spreads from the cervix to the upper areas of the genital tract.

There are certain factors which increase the chances of being affected by PID:

  1. Being sexually active
  2. Already affected by STDs such as gonorrhea
  3. Past history of PID
  4. Having multiple sexual partners

Symptoms-

Women may experience pain while urinating and engaging in sexual intercourse, coupled with sore feeling in the stomach along with nausea. Abnormal vaginal discharge and a rise in body temperature are common symptoms as well.

Treatment-
Once the disease has been diagnosed by a doctor, a treatment plan is devised. The treatment options that you can avail of are:

  1. Medications: If the symptoms are mild, then the doctor will prescribe antibiotic medications. Usually the antibiotics are administered by mouth unless the symptoms are severe, when the drugs are administered intravenously. Your partner would also require medications if you happen to be diagnosed with PID, so that he/she does not catch it.
  2. Surgery: Surgery is recommended by the doctor in case of tissue inflammation and the presence of pus (abscess). The aim of surgery is to get rid of the abscess to prevent any further infection.

In addition to the treatment methods, there are certain precautionary measures that you can adopt to be safe:

  1. Have protected sex.
  2. Try and stick to one sexual partner.
  3. Visit your gynecologist for regular checkups.

U start ayurvedic medicines for irregular periods and for follicles if you and your partner are planning to conceive, you should start taking folic acid before you get pregnant. Folic acid helps to provide the best health outcomes for your baby when it is growing. Taking folic acid daily before and during pregnancy also prevents the occurrence of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in your baby. You? re most likely to get pregnant if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation (releasing an egg from the ovary). This is usually about 14 days after the first day of your last period. An egg lives for about 12-24 hours after it? s released. For pregnancy to happen, the egg must be fertilised by a sperm within this time. If you want to get pregnant, having sex every couple of days will mean there? s always sperm waiting in the fallopian tubes to meet the egg when it? s released. Any queries consult privately.

Hi lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. Sometimes delayed period also have symptoms similar to early pregnancy. If your test is negative its unlikely that you could be pregnant. If you still have doubts I suggest you repeat the test with an early morning sample of urine. If still negative then wait for another 3-4 days for your period. If they do not start then we can start you on medicines to resume them hope this information has been helpful. All the best.

Super Fact of the Day: Your ears don’t stop growing!
You didn’t completely stop growing at 18. The older you get, the bigger your nose and ears seem to be. Big ears are just not found on young people. Ears actually do grow as we age.

Dear lybrate-user, best is to wait. No periods for good 6 months, goes in favour of menopause. Lab tests are there but may be done only if there is anxiety.

While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, doctors believe that hormonal imbalances and genetics play a role. Women are more likely to develop PCOS if their mother or sister also has the condition. Overproduction of the hormone androgen may be another contributing factor. Androgen is a male sex hormone that women’s bodies also produce. Women with PCOS often produce higher-than-normal levels of androgen. This can affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Excess insulin (a hormone that helps convert sugars and starches into energy) may cause high androgen levels.

Over the counter pills like i-pill, unwanted 72 are available if the physical contact has occurred within 72 hours. If more time than that has passed, then you will have to wait till the time of next periods and check with a urine pregnancy test for pregnancy.
