Nutrition and Dental Health

Almost everything you eat and drink has an impact on your oral health, especially your teeth. This impact is not just due to the food's nutritional value, but also because parts of the mouth come in direct contact with the food that is taken. For example, if the teeth come in contact with a compound that has a pH value lower than 5.5, the enamel of teeth can get softened.

The following is a list of the foods, which are good for your teeth:

  1. Dairy products: Milk and most other dairy products are rich in calcium and protein. The cells called osteoblasts absorb calcium and create the protein tissues, which are the building blocks of the skeleton. An added advantage of these foods is that they are low in sugar content, which is beneficial for the teeth.
  2. Water: Fluoridated water is extremely good for bone and dental health. Minerals like chlorine, calcium, phosphorus and fluorine can prevent damage caused by acidic foods.
  3. Dry fruits: Most nuts are protein rich. The processes of biting and chewing also stimulate the salivary glands and saliva helps to clean the mouth and maintain oral health.
  4. Meat: Meat is also high in protein content and so it helps to protect the teeth and replenish the dissolved enamel. Fish and eggs are similarly helpful.

Here is a list of things that you should consume in regulated quantities to maintain dental health:

  1. Citrus fruits: Fruits like lemons, oranges, grapes etc contain citric acid. Acidic foods erode the tooth enamel and so these kinds of fruits should be included in your daily diet in small portions.
  2. Carbonated drinks: Most soft drinks and beverages contain large quantities of sugar. The sugar can be used by the dental plaque (mass of bacteria growing on the inside on the mouth) to produce acids and over time, which gives rise to a thick yellow layer on the teeth, damaging them.
  3. Candied sugar: Foods that are sticky can remain stuck in between the teeth for a very long time and cause decay of the enamel and harm the gums.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. May be viral pharyngitis. If so, there is no specific treatment for viral pharyngitis. You can relieve symptoms by gargling with warm salt water several times a day (use ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Taking anti-inflammatory drugs or medications, such as acetaminophen, can control symptoms.

The simplest method of removing minor surface stains is polishing, or micro-abrasion if staining is more intrinsic. Provided that your discolouration is not due to inadequate enamel exposing the dentin, tooth whitening (bleaching) is often the most effective treatment for yellow stained teeth. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply snowdent paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min. Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results.

I had RCT for right side lower teeth 5. After one month, I started feeling extreme bad pain which was not fully going even after painkiller. I immediately visited dentist who said a rice size extra small teeth between teeth 4 and 5 is giving me the pain so he extracted that. Next day he released pressure of RCT tooth. It kept paining so today he removed crown and have appointment for tuesday that he will remove RCT material and leave tooth with medicine. Immediately after cap removal, I got a lump behind the teeth which kept increasing in size and right now it's a pea size. I need to understand the reason of this lump which came within last five hours immediately after crown removal. How it will be treated? Do I need to redo RCT or just pus drain or extraction or just antibiotics will help.

Hi lybrate-user, I can understand you had gone through a lot, but don't worry this infection is gonna subside. Mostly after root canal treatment a patient complains of pain due to two reasons either failed root canal or food impaction due to defective crown. The way you described the pain, I mean the intensity of pain suggests failed root canal, may be due to missed canal or due to improper sterilisation. This swelling is due to accumulation of pus, and most probably a gingival abcess due to some calculus or the cement with which the crown was fixed has gone in between the gums and teeth. Well xray would have given a clear picture, though I would say go for re-rct with a course of antibiotics. No need to drain the pus, swelling will subside after the course of antibiotic. Hope this helps.

How do Advance Technologies Help Manage Dental Phobia?

Hi, this is Dr. Amit Chavan from Smile Again Dental Clinic. Myself a periodontist and implantologist. My core areas are gum surgeries, flap surgeries, implants and laser dentistry. I have an experience of about more than 7 years and have been practicing from Smile Again for more than 5 years now. Our dream of having this practice was to have everything under one roof basically to have the cutting edge technology that includes dental laser, OPG machine, VistaScan which is the low emission radiation under one roof so that the patient doesn’t have to go anywhere outside. That was the idea, and that is what we have been implementing. Our main vision for this practice was to get the dental phobia out of the patients.

Basically, whenever a dental patient walks into the dental practice, he has the fear of unknown. So, basically we have made sure that we remove that fear present with the best cutting edge technology and the best specialist dentist that is associated with us. Basically, when the patient comes to our clinic, the first thing that he will be greeted with a very warm and welcome smile from our receptionist and the staff is present. The waiting area is specifically decorated to provide relaxing oasis of calm and tranquility to create an environment where dentistry is the last thing on your mind. We are keen to make an environment that is more than welcoming for the patients.

Smile Again is spread across 1500 sqft and with four separate operatory chambers ensuring complete privacy and absolute comfort to each patient. The first cubicle is for diagnosis where you will be meeting with the dentist and this will be the one which is designed exclusively to create a relaxing environment. This is where we do the initial diagnosis keeping in mind the chief complaint of the patient and we discuss the different types of options that are available to the patient according to his need and the required treatment. In the second operatory, the basic treatment is carried out such as filling, scaling, and the root canals that is what is carried out.

Then comes the third operatory where in which only the cosmetic procedure carried with the consultation given to the patient and explaining him what are his aesthetic demands and accordingly doing the treatments. Operatory 4 is basically is a exclusive surgical unit where minor surgical procedures and dental implants are placed and this is basically done so that no cross contamination of infection is done. We have a dedicated centre where we conduct courses for newly passed out doctors and we are also in touch with the latest advancements that are present in the dentistry.

There is a gap between my two front teeth .this gap was not there before 1 month but I do not know the reason of this gap. I want to know the cost of removable braces for upper teeth?

There is a gap between my two front teeth .this gap was not there before 1 month but I do not know the reason of this...
The gap in between the two teeth is a common phenomena. Do not worry. If your teeth is pushed outside it may need braces. Most often it can be corrected by simple removable braces which will cost within Rs. 5000 / If at all the tooth is inside but gap alone seen. Then many different types of gap closure can be done either with Crowns or tooth colour filling materials. The fees will be again from Rs. 2000/ to 8000/

You can go for scaling followed by teeth whitening (bleaching). If that does not help then, veneers are the ultimate option, they are like permanantly making your desired smile as how you want it to be. Get in for a check up.

Do not wear your denture for few weeks until healing. Eat lot of fruits & green leafy vegetables & drink plenty of water. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with t. Rebagen 10, morning one tab & one at night for 5 days, c. Becosules 5 cap, for five days in the morning after meals. Hexigel ointment on the area of ulcer. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

About The Root Canal Treatment

Certified Implantologist, Aesthetic , BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Play video

Hello, everybody, I am Dr Priyanka Puri. I am an Implantologist and a cosmetic/ aesthetic specialist. I have been practising for the past 12 years now. Today we are here to discuss some common topics which everybody faces in dental. First, I would like to talk about the root canal.
A root canal is a simple procedure. Basically, in a root canal procedure, we make the tooth non-vital and in the procedure basically, there is 2-3 part of the procedure.

  • The first part involves the opening of the tooth.
  • The second part involves cleaning of the tooth nerves and the third part involves filling it with an artificial material which is bio compatible with the tooth structure and facing a cap over it for strengthening it.

And now, with latest technologies, a root canal can be done in single sitting also. When it is single sitting, the important part of single sitting is that your bone should not have any abscess or any pus discharge there. If it all it is there, then you will not probably want to finish it in a single sitting. And apart from that, the patient fears like how long the tooth will be there, how long the treatment will last for me and all those things. If you take good care of your root canal and if you maintain it well, the tooth is going to last you lifelong.

There is no issue that a patient should be facing with a root canal and then you are on your antibiotics and pain killers while you are going for a root canal procedure.

There are some symptoms which are very specific for a root canal like recurrent pain in mouth while eating, while not eating, while sleeping having shooting pain. Lot of pain while eating hot food or hard food probably that side will not be functional for the patient. So, all these symptoms also guide to a large extent that a patient is requiring or a tooth is requiring a root canal treatment.

A simple cavity is very different from a root canal with the symptoms itself. A simple cavity would not have all these symptoms aligned with it and root canal would be having these symptoms aligned with it. So, I should request all the people that you should be aware of the dental hygiene and in your mouth, if you see some cavities starting up, you should always get the preventive treatment done.

You should not wait for the decay to convert it to a root canal. Because then the tooth will be non-vital and will not help you with the preventive treatment.
