What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects?

Fellowship in Interventional Pulmonology, DNB (Respiratory Diseases)
Pulmonologist, Thane
Best medication for asthma is inhalers. Hardly any side effects as negligible amount is absorbed in the body. Few common side effects are throat irritation and tremors at times.

I am suffering from sinusitis. Is it safe to administrate xylometazoline solution for a long period. Kindly reply.

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
It is definitely not advisable to use xylomatazoline for more than 3 to 5 days. It will definitely give excellent immediate relief for short period but it increases swelling inside nose and worsens sinusitis.

Probably a disl prolapse instead which is giving pressure symptoms (pain radiation to leg) your both screning tests are negative and you have not being infected by tubercular bacterism so better think otherwise and consult an orthopedic surgeon.

I have too much giddiness pain in neck my head is heavy is this due to sinus take stugeron25 in morning lcant stand w...
Sinus generally do not cause neck pain and the headaches caused by it are frontal. Giddiness could be due to bppv (benign paroxysmal postural vertigo) which occurs when the neck moves or tilts in a particular direction and position. If the side on which this occurs can be known then the treatment becomes a little simple. Your neck pain may be due to cervical spondylosis. Avoid using pillows. Do not keep your neck bent on forward for long. Do extension exercises for neck. The special exercise for treating giddiness can be asked as a private question on lybrate.

I am 25 yrs old male, I am having cough throughout the year. What is reason n remedy for it. Please guide.

Firstly there's no lifelong cure for the common cold. Antibiotics are only effective against infections of throat and are of no use against cold viruses. Over-the-counter (otc) cold preparations won't cure a common cold or make it go away any sooner, and most have side effects. A saltwater gargle 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2tsp turmeric dissolved in a glass of warm water can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. To help relieve nasal congestion, try saline (pure salt water) nasal drops. If you have a throat infection, or a viral cold then I will prescribe appropriate meds based on your detailed assessment. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

BHMS, Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine
Homeopath,
Hello, according to me in asthma homoeopathic medicine are best, you can loose dependace on spray or corticosteroids easily. There are no side effects of natural medicine, it covers all symptoms with single medication. Act gently with quick relief even during asthma exacerbation. A case session of 15 to 20 min is required for the same.

Prventing COPD Exacerbations

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Prventing COPD Exacerbations

COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and is generally used to describe a broad category of diseases. These include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, non-reversible asthma as well as some forms of bronchiectasis. All of these diseases, however, can be prevented from getting worse by taking similar measures as the causes of these diseases are very similar.

Here are the ways to prevent COPD exacerbations:

  1. Cleanliness: It is crucial that you do not allow infections to set in. Infections are probably the worst type of exacerbation possible in COPD. All you need to do to prevent infection is to take a little care to ensure good hygiene. Wash your hands often and do not allow people with colds or flu to come close to you.
  2. Take vaccines: Make sure your flu and pneumonia shots have not been missed.
  3. Take medicines: It is crucial that medicines for your lungs are taken on schedule, if you have COPD. The possible medicines which you could take if your doctor prescribes it includes inhaled beta-agonists, steroids and anticholinergics.
  4. Spirometry: Doctors often recommend the use of the portable Spirometry device, Spirometer, in case of COPD. Spirometers check the condition of the lungs by measuring various parameters to see how well the lungs are working. Spirometers can easily measure FEV1, a parameter which measures how much air can you blow out in one second. This is especially great if you do not know whether your condition has exacerbated or not.
  5. Corticosteroid: It is another type of medicine used, which can prevent COPD exacerbations. In its place, even inhaled beta-agonists or anticholinergics can also be used.

I am suffering from cough from 30 days can you suggest me a medicine? And explain me the reason for it?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine), Certified in Evidence Based Diabetes Management, MNAMS
Internal Medicine Specialist, Kolkata
Thank you for the query first of all it is important to know whether you are having an infective or allergic cough. If the cough is dry, it is usually allergic (but not always). Infective cough usually has associated sputum and other symptoms like fever. Since your cough has been there for a month, it is advisable to get a chest x ray (pa view) done. I you are having sputum, please get a gram stain, afb (acid fast bacilli) stain and culture done. Steam inhalation helps in dry cough, so does anti allergic tablets. However, in an infective cough, antibiotics may be needed. A number of cough syrups are available, depending on whether your cough is dry or you are producing sputum. Please consult a physician for further advise and management. Regards.
