I am a male of 47 years and suffering from serious emotional eating disorders. At times, I just walk down the stairs leaving my work to find something to eat and take an aimless stroll. Am I going to depression? I am having serious differences with my children as I try to steer them clear of the hardship of lives. They think that I am over reactive, hotlar type and thus do not have any respect for me.

I am a male of 47 years and suffering from serious emotional eating disorders. At times, I just walk down the stairs ...
First, let me address your emotional eating disorder. You need to identify the emotion that is behind the excessive eating: are you sad, angry, afraid or happy that you tend to want to eat every time? when you have done that it is as simple as addressing the feeling that feeds into the over-eating and you will cease to have a problem. This can be done with a counselor, ideally. Many of us over-eat when emotionally distraught. You are already over-weight and for some people weight gain is a side effect of the medication. Apart from that it is likely that your metabolism might have reduced considerably making you susceptible to gain weight even with small quantities of food. If you still want to eat (i mean healthy food of course), you can consume more, if you did some noteworthy exercise, after getting approval from your doctor. Exercise boosts your metabolic rate. Foods also boost metabolism: egg whites, lean meat, water, chili peppers, coffee, green tea, milk, whole grains, and lentils. Cucumber is a zero calorie food and takes long to digest and much metabolism too. If you have it before each meal and any amount too, it will curb the amount of consumption. Even so, the addictive aspect of eating involves the obsession and compulsion i. E. Your mind will be always thinking about food and then it will feed into a compulsion to consume something. So, if you occupy yourself, (not busy) then the mind will not think too much on food and therefore it will negate the compulsion. Now all these measures will have a positive effect on your bp. Regarding gaining the respect of your children, it is true that people who are losing control over their own habits, like in an addiction type of circumstance, tend to be too protective and restrictive towards their children. You need to trust your children by giving them more freedom. You can trust your children more by giving them the right values in childhood and then you can relax because it acts like a vaccination. Your role as a parent is to offer them good role models and to give them useful information to help them handle life. If they mess up, it is still okay, but the great advantage you have is to know that you had told them and now it is their responsibility, not yours.

Sir, I have been smoking from 2 years and my age is 20 I have quieted smoking from last one month and feeling better now. My question is what should I do to make my lungs healthy?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Congratulations on your success with quitting smoking. This is incredible and you must keep it up under any circumstances. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself.

Hi I am 22 years old first of all I was in seminary frankly I was more worried about my families financial condition ...
Dear Lybrate User, You are very young and are not sure about what to do with your life. This is quite natural at your age. It appears that you either have low self confidence or anxiety because of which you hesitate to talk to people. Anger is not bad but what makes you angry and how you react when you are angry is to be looked into. You say that the Psychiatrist has informed you that you are in depression, but it seems that he/she has put you on any medication (you have not mentioned it). In this situation, in my opinion, it would be very helpful if you approach a Counsellor. The Counsellor will help you to understand and manage your anger, will help you to reduce your anxiety. The Counselling process will give you more clarity about life and yourself, hence you will be able to chose what you want to do with your life. The Counsellor also will help you in understanding your depression and may refer you for further assessments. Kindly consult a Counsellor as early as possible. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. Kidneys are the organs that help filter waste products from the blood. They are also involved in regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and red blood cell production in the body. There are many causes for kidney problems. Three of the main reasons are lack of blood flow to the kidneys direct damage to the kidneys themselves urine backed up in the kidneys cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. Alcohol is a poison. Alcohol damages your liver, nerve cells and brain. Quit liquor. Take care.

Dear , the best method to improve your concentration, memory power and recollection etc is to use your brain creatively again and again. Doing number puzzles, creative hobies like painting, games like chess etc can sharpen your brain and improve concentration. Exercise plays an important part in sharpening the brain and in many aspects of memory. Nutritious food including green vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals and pulses are beneficial. Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, coffee, red meat etc are not that good for sharpening brain and memory power. Being happy and cheerful also contributes positively. Take care.

Dear, tension means anxiety. Anxiety is fear about unknown happening or fear about future. Anxiety about things which we do not know or anxiety about things we are not experienced are common. Please tell me what makes you anxious- past? present? future? career? economic status? health matters? anything else? let me know. Take care.

Dear lybrate user, the medicines will certainly give some relief to your wife. But it will be symptomatic. The moment the effect of the medicine wears out, she might get the same feelings again. If she is feeling very sad and axious, please take her to a counsellor. She will be able to relieve her stress by talking to the counsellor and the counsellor will help her to modify her thought processes. Once she expresses her feelings, her anxiety will reduce. If any further assessments are required, the counsellor will guide you. Take care.

Hello! My cousin has been diagnosed with brain tumour which isn't malignant (age-15) He finished his radiation 3 months ago. Now he's facing problems like forgetting people and forgetting what he's doing and speaking unrelatedly. Here doctors say that that's because of edema and will subside within 3-4 months. Is there anything to worry?

Masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology

At this point I would suggest that you just encourage him to do memory exercises. Do questions and answers. Play games like scrabble, word games. Singing and listen to music. Writing is also good exercise. Take medicines prescribed.

I'm very tense for my husband because he is alcoholic from last six year . Main problem is after having 4 pegs he will not have any sense to talk and he start abusing language and after me.He had gastric bypass in 2006 after his surgery he became wild and arrogant . Plz help me out . He is diabetic also

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Your husband is complicating matters by consuming alcohol after this surgery and also being a diabetic. You must take him to his doctor and find out from him how dangerous alcohol is for his condition. It seems that he has a strong oral issue which has switched from heavy eating to heavy drinking, after the surgery. This may indicate some issue stemming from his early childhood ? normally some deep pain that he is smothering by intoxication. He will need to be hospitalized to detoxify him and then for some extensive addiction counseling to resolve this for good. You could then both go for AA meetings and Al-anon support groups: the former for your husband and the latter for family members of alcoholics like you. You could also contact me for the book on addictions, for a fee of Rs. 250/- only.
