No need to worry dear. Your mother needs rest. She should do some quadricep exercise. Better to take hot water fomentation. Slr. Knee banding. Quadricep strengthening exercise. Twice daily.

Know the Causes and Treatments Available for Lower Back Pain

Lumbago or Lower back pain is a condition that is characterized by mild to serious pain or uneasiness in the lower back region. Lower back pain is more prevalent among the youth whose work includes physical exertion or sitting for long hours and is also common in individuals belonging to the 'retirement age' because of their sedentary lifestyles. The pain might be acute (sudden and extreme) or chronic if it has been endured over a span of three months. 

The most common causes of lower back pain are: 

  1. Overuse of the muscles and includes strains or sprains of soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments and vertebral compression fractures. 
  2. Pressure on the roots of nerves due to conditions such as spinal canal stenosis (narrowing down of the spaces within the spine) or herniated disc (a condition of the rubbery disc present between the spine bones (vertebrae)). 
  3. Osteoarthritis is a condition wherein the shock absorbers, found in the joints, progressively break down. 

When it affects the spine, the condition causes back pain by stiffening the spinal joints. Symptoms of Lumbago (Low back pain) include: 

  1. Stiff back 
  2. Numbness in the legs 
  3. Loss of weight 
  4. Difficulty in urinating 
  5. Sciatica, which is the pain running down the lower back to hips, legs and thighs. This occurs due to a compression by an intervertebral disc in the back, which leads to a pinched nerve. 

How to diagnose lower back pain or a slip disc?

Some methods that can be utilized for diagnosing back include Xray, CT Scans, Myelogram and MRI scans. 

Treatment options available -
Exercises along with correction of bad posture for relieving back pain are a common component of any treatment plan. Factors such as type and severity of the pain as well as the patient's history can help in determining the type of treatment that can be administered. In most cases, the recovery time is usually six weeks without surgery. Typical treatment of back pain includes use of muscle relaxants, painkillers and physiotherapy. Surgery is suggested in severe cases. Some other treatments are discussed below: 

  1. Rest: A period of rest and inactivity would help the injured tissues to recuperate and relieve back pain. However, extended periods of rest lead to weakening of muscles and hence might prolong the existing back pain. 
  2. Heat and ice packs: Both heat and ice therapies are used according to the patient's preference to reduce inflammation. 
  3. Medications: A large variety of prescription and over-the-counter medicines are available. Some reduce back pain caused by inflammation and others prevent the pain signals from travelling to the brain. Examples would include acetaminophen, celecoxib and diclofenac. 4 Best Dynamic Chiropractic Chest Stretches for Golfers

I  Forward Lunge with Open Torso

Oblique flexibility is important for good posture and back function. When your obliques aren’t active, more stress is placed on the lower back. This stretch lengthens the oblique muscle and improves flexibility.

1.Engage your core to stabilize the spine and pull your shoulder blades together.Step forward with your left leg and keep a slight bend in the right knee behind you. Slowly shift your body weight onto the front foot and find your balance without wobbling. 

2.Raise your right arm high overhead. Avoid driving your hips forward Lower your hips toward the floor. Continue lowering your body to a comfortable position,or until your thigh becomes parallel to the floor. Return to the start position by firmly pressing off with the front leg.Repeat on the opposite side.

II  Triangle Pose

This basic yoga pose builds strength, stability, and balance. Don’t be intimidated by the degree of movement—it’s best approached as an ongoing experiment.Focus your mind on the steadiness of the feet and legs, the expansion of the torso, and the evenness of the arms and legs.

1.Begin with your feet about 3 feet apart.Turn your left foot in slightly to the right and your right foot out 90 degrees. Keep the center of the right kneecap in line with the right ankle. Raise your arms parallel to the floor,shoulder wide, palms down.

2.Exhale and extend your torso to the right directly over the leg, bending from the hip joint, not the waist. Rest your right hand on your shin or ankle. Stretch your left arm toward the ceiling and let your eyes follow the left hand. Stay in this pose for 30 to 60 seconds and repeat on the opposite side.1 2

EASIER: Use a block or stack of blocks along the outside of your foot for a more comfortable bend at the waist.

III   Side Overhead Reach on Stability Ball

The stability ball not only adds a balance component to this stretch, it allows you to create a greater angle along the entire side of the body you’re stretching.Use the stretch to add a bit of a challenge to your flexibility routine.

1.Lying on your right side on a stability ball, place your right hand on the floor beside the ball. Reach your right leg behind your torso with the outside of the foot on the ground. Cross your left leg over your right,and with a bent knee, place your left foot flat on the floor.

2.To move into the full position, reach your left arm up over your head.Straighten your left leg out and reach upward to feel the stretch along the left side of your torso. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds and repeat 3 times before switching sides.

IV  Dynamic Chest Movement

Dynamic movements prepare your joints for activity. The repeated muscle stretch and contraction provides a thorough warm-up through a wide range of motion. 

Golfers and racket sport players will appreciate the feel of this stretch.

1.Start with your feet shoulder width apart and your arms extended in front and parallel to the floor

2.Keep your arms extended and pull them back as far as possible. Return to the starting position to complete the movement. Repeat 8 to 10 times with a minimal pause between each change of direction.

CAUTION: 

It’s important to maintain good posture through out this exercise.Keep your eyes forward and your ears over your shoulders to avoid a forward head thrust.Perform before other chest stretches or in sequence with other dynamic movements

Quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day.
