6 Signs of Avoidant Personality Disorder, 2nd Most Common Psychiatric Disorder

M.Sc - Disaster Mitigation, MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
6 Signs of Avoidant Personality Disorder, 2nd Most Common Psychiatric Disorder

Feelings of inadequacy for long durations and being extremely sensitive to what others think of you is a disorder called avoidant personality disorder symptom. Such feelings of inadequacy in turn push the person to become isolated from the society and the person avoids people, work, and other activities. Social and occupational functioning is affected as the person is extremely sensitive and has very low self-esteem. Symptoms of avoidant personality disorder are:

  1. Avoiding social interactions: people suffering from this disorder avoid almost all sorts of interpersonal contact since they lie with the fear of rejection, disapproval and criticism.
  2. Avoiding risks: they avoid taking personal risks or being involved in activities which seem new, because they fear that they will embarrass themselves.
  3. Socially unplugged: they are not willing to get involved with individuals unless they are absolutely certain of being liked by the person.
  4. Preoccupied with negative perception: the idea of being criticized or rejected in social functions is so deep within their psyche that they are often preoccupied with only this thought in their minds.
  5. Inferiority complex: people suffering from avoidant personality disorder consider themselves as good for nothing, unappealing, and inferior to everyone else.
  6. Avoid intimacy: they are always reluctant to get into intimate relationships because they feel that they will be shamed and ridiculed. Because of such fears, they let go of relationships where they would have been genuinely cherished too.

The only treatment possible for this disorder is psychotherapy. While some people opt for long term therapy, most people usually visit a psychotherapist only when they feel overwhelmed with their fear and emotions.

I have problem of phobia and fear, my thoughts come mostly negative, I goes to depression suggest cure.

I have problem of phobia and fear, my thoughts come mostly negative, I goes to depression suggest cure.
Fear and anxiety often times go together. At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Dear lybrate user, Anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Take care.

I have a relative who is 38 years old and seems to be suffering from bipolar disorder. He is not ready to visit any doctor and day by day his condition is worsening. Can you please guide us if you could be of any help in this case.

Dear lybrate-user, Usually bipolar disorder persons don't like to be treated. That is only in manic phase. In depressive phase Saurabh wants to feel better and he may want treatment though you may find him fine. Mostly in the normal phase, psychiatrists counsell him for regular long term mood stabilisers. As a relative, you can consult the psychiatrist who has diagnosed him as bipolar - even without Saurabh. He may give you some suggestions. Or, wait for the phase to change by itself when he will be co operative. Alternately, if he is suicidal or homicidal, you can seek the help of magistrate to treat him without his consent.

How Can I Get Relief From Family Stress? Is there any medicine or meditation to remove the stress that I can feel I am trying bt could not able to get myself out from it.

How Can I Get Relief From Family Stress? Is there any medicine or meditation to remove the stress that I can feel I a...
The stress that you feel is not dependent on the stressor i.e. the family. It is entirely dependent on your perception of stress. Life is difficult no doubt, as a general rule, but what we do adds to the stress in our response. We add to the stress of life instead of reducing it or learning to deal with it. Many of us follow a policy of avoidance. We cannot do that all of our lives. So the first thing to do is to change your perception. For example, look at it as a challenge that you would like to meet with a positive outlook. See everything as a gift from God to perform as though you are doing it for Him. God never gives us stress-related stimulus beyond our capacity. If you look at opportunities with spiritual eyes, you know that it is ultimately given by God. Secondly, build a good constitution mentally, emotionally and physically to combat stress. Eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise regularly. Talk about your emotions regularly to a good friend every day. Learn stress management techniques. Do Yoga and meditation. Pray every day to God to give you the strength, and offer your response as a prayer to Him – you will give your best and you will feel so satisfied when you do it well. You could also talk to yoru family members either by yourself or seek the help of a respected elder. You never know when someone else speaks on your behalf, they may just about succeed.

I am 89 year old & tired with life, I want to end my life. Suggest some easy way to end the life with one stroke only ?

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
In india, it is not yet legal to help in euthanasia. I doubt, if anyone will suggest anything in this regard. Yet, I do suggest that whatever days of your life are left, live it with an attitude, that this life will never come back again. Have an attitude of gratitude and remember all those things that were good in your life. People who were good to you, you were good to some people etc. Try to give back a little to the society, because this brings a happiness, which no amount of money can. This make your last days more peaceful and happier. If you have any queries, please contact me on private chat. Take care.

Bipolar Disorder - can anyone tell me what is the most effective and least amount of side effects?

MD-PhD, FIPS, Fellow of Academy of General Education (FAGE), DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Ludhiana
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition. It runs an unpredictable course of ups and downs. When left untreated, these ups and downs can be devastating. The recurring manic and depressive episodes that characterize the disease make it difficult to lead a stable, productive life. In the manic phase, you may be hyperactive and irresponsible. In the depressive phase, it may be difficult to do anything at all. Early diagnosis and treatment can help you avoid these problems. Successful treatment of bipolar disorder depends on a combination of factors. Medication alone is not enough. In order to get the most out of treatment, it's important to educate yourself about the illness, communicate with your doctors and therapists, have a strong support system, make healthy lifestyle choices, and stick to your treatment plan. Recovering from bipolar disorder doesn?t happen overnight. As with the mood swings of bipolar disorder, treatment has its own ups and downs. Finding the right treatments takes time and setbacks happen. But with careful management and a commitment to getting better, you can get your symptoms under control and live fully.
