Hi, irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) is a chronic condition that manifests itself with abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. As partially digested food moves from the stomach through the intestines, the intestines squeeze and contract to move the food. With ibs, intestinal movement becomes irregular, causing food to move too quickly or slowly through the digestive system. When the food moves too quickly, the bowel does not have enough time to extract the water and the result is diarrhea. Food that moves too slowly causes the bowel to extract too much water, resulting in constipation. Increase the amount of soluble fiber in your diet to increase the bulk of your stool. Bulkier stool is softer and easier to pass through your digestive system. Be cautious with insoluble fiber, such as wheat bran, which can worsen ibs symptoms. Take lecithin. Foods rich in lecithin are egg yolks, soybeans, cow milk butter and animal brains. You can also buy soy lecithin granules in most supermarkets or health food stores. Lecithin helps restore the endothelium which is often damaged in irritable bowel syndrome (ibs). Caffeine and nicotine serve as muscle stimulants and may aggravate sensitive bowels, contributing to ibs symptoms. Alcohol is known to be a gastric irritant. Get regular exercise. Exercise helps your body to deal with stress and promotes good bowel function. Some people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome are lactose intolerant. Try avoiding all milk and dairy products for two weeks to see if your symptoms improve. If you have been diagnosed with ibs and have bad period pains with it, then ask your doctor if you can try buscopan cramps (tablets) they're not recommended for everyone but they do work for period and ibs issues and the cramps that you get with ibs. Peppermint has been thought to help ibs (constipation and diarrhea) as it aids healthy digestion and relieves abdominal cramps, it can be taken in many forms, for instance in capsules taken before or after meals, herbal tea's and fresh peppermint.

I go to bed at 10 pm but can' sleep after 2 or 3 am, it is continuing for last six moths after taking morning walk around 7 am again I am able to sleep for 2 hours.I don't have any other problem and don't take any medicine.please advise me what to do?

Many times when the sleep is disturbed it leads to many problems in the body and the mind. In today’s fast moving world sleep is disturbed by our surroundings and our activities. Here are some simple steps to improve your sleep. 1. Keep a fixed time to wake up every morning regardless of what time you go to sleep. 2. Use your bed/mattress only for sleeping. Better don’t use it for watching TV/browsing the net/chatting on phone. In case you haven’t noticed separate furniture are available for those activities.! 3. Avoid taking tea/coffee after 5 pm. No question of smoking or alcohol – these are sure fire ways to have a disturbed sleep. 4. If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed, walk out of the bed to a different room. Engage in some simple activity like reading a pleasant book/listening to some melody. 5. Don’t keep staring at the watch/clock while trying to fall asleep. 6. Try to unwind with a warm bath and gentle music before going to bed. Grandma would say drink a cup of milk. Listen to her.! 7. Sleep in a place which is not noisy/bright – pretty obvious isn’t it.?! Yet we ignore it too often. 8. Consult a psychiatrist for help if above methods fail. Please don’t self-medicate. We are here to help.!! - Dr.Parthasarathy,MBBS,MD.(JIPMER), Psychiatrist OMR Chennai ( Thoraipakkam)

If he is in his teens, there will be the influences of hormones that must be factored in. Due to his age I suspect that he is going through a spurt in the production of the male sex hormone, which affects him in three ways quite unknown to him or to you. First, there will be a sexual agenda that it will kick off, secondly, there will be aggressiveness and rebelliousness, and thirdly, he will suffer from acne and pimple problems. This is the effect of the hormone that has a duration of almost two years and he will have no control over it. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact his memory because of the chemical but also bring along some distractions that come with it. But he may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if he goes to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else he is doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that his brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Let him do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. He should have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. He needs to check out if he is stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if he combines the two modes, he will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When he gets bored, let him study by writing. If he repeats learning at least five to seven times, he will apparently remember for a longer time. He should sit comfortably but not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut the left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that his teacher will be able to guide him with. If home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect his memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

I am 19 years old. I have problem with my short term memory day by day its increasing. What should i do?

DM - Neurology
Neurologist,
I think you mean that you have a problem with your short-term memory (stm), that you are forgetting things, and you feel this is worsening day by day. At this point, this is a perception, and self-observed conclusions on our cognitive functions ('brain functions') are notoriously unreliable; anxiety, low self-esteem and other psychological factors contribute to this low reliability. Still, since this is a worry, it needs objective assessment: a neurologist, or a psychologist should perform a formal test, such as a mini-mental status exam (mmse) to confirm or rule out your suspicion. Any discussion on the reasons and about possible treatments and outcomes would only be meaningful after that assessment is completed.

Divorce is very difficult for both the adults and worse for the kids. So it is quite understandable that you are depressed. If the divorce was granted on valid grounds you need to accept the verdict as final and move on. I am sure there will be lessons to learn and that is really important when moving on. You should meet with a counselor and talk about all your feelings and mistakes you have made that had contributed to this failure in your marriage. There is nothing wrong about being honest and open, now that your divorce is through, but it really helps to frankly look at the errors or willful behaviors that were the cause. Do not talk ill of your ex, even if it is very tempting but neither should you hesitate to speak the truth. The companionship, the good times, and good memories will tend to bother you, but if you are mature, you will let them be positive, especially if you talk about it in your sessions with the counselor. You will need a good listener more than anything else. Quickly get back into circulation, mix around, and get into occupying activities: you are a free man after all. Avoid getting into another relationship right now until much of the baggage is sorted out. Life is precious and any time lost in brooding will disturb your personality irreparably and cause unnecessary heartburn and permanent disturbances to your equilibrium. It is a lot easier for a man to get over divorce for various reasons and so you must act rather than wallow in self-pity. I recommend that you resettle down with another woman if you are so inclined, subject to having learnt your lessons!

Dear, at your age, memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

It is possible she is having migraine, as the symptoms like one sided headache and nausea/vomiting are going towards that. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist for further management. Consider getting a CT or MRI brain done to rule out other things.

Hi. Here are few asanas which will help you in reducing the anxiety problem. -Sit in the meditation position (cross-legged or heel seat) and put the hands in the lap. The back is straight and the belly relaxed. Stop one minute every thought. Then remain in meditation, thoughts can come and go as they please. All feelings of anger, fear and grief appear and dissolve by themselves. -Dhanurasana: Lie on your stomach with your feet hip-width apart and your arms by the side of your body. Fold your knees and hold your ankles. Breathing in, lift your chest off the ground and pull your legs up and back. Look straight ahead Keep the pose stable while paying attention to your breath. Your body is now taut as a bow. Continue to take long deep breaths as you relax in this pose. But don’t get carried away! Do not overdo the stretch. After 15 -20 seconds, as you exhale, gently bring your legs and chest to the ground. Release the ankles and relax. -Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Begin focusing each body part and relaxing it, then moving on. Keep the mind focused on relaxation, the breath should be normal. Relax the whole body. (The mind and body are deeply connected. If the mind is occupied by thoughts and worries then the shavasana will be unsuccessful. Therefore one has to acquire the stability of the mind along with the stability of the body.) Anuloma involves inhaling through both nostrils together and exhaling each breath alternately between the left and right nostrils. The thumb of the right hand is used to manipulate the right nostril, while the pinky and ring finger are used to control the left nostril. There are many other poses of yoga like Balasan, Setu Bandha Sarvangasan, Uttanasan, Garudasan, Savasana, Triconasana, Viprita Karani, Marjaryasana, Dhyana, Bhujangasana, Anulom-Vilum, Pranayam, etc. Another stress-buster can be getting involved in any of your hobbies (may be a childhood hobby which you used to enjoy a lot!) - dancing, singing, painting, listening to soothing music, playing musical instruments, etc. (Believe me, you would really enjoy doing this alone as well or may be with your friends, kids). Medication: Take homoeopathic medication - Schwabe's Bacopa Monierri 1x/ thrice daily and Kali Phos. 6x/ once at night - take them for 4 weeks. Revert.

You could be under some form of stress. If you meet with a counselor and get that taken care of a lot of hair fall may diminish. Anyway, everyone one of us will lose hair to the extent of 75-100 per day, whether we like it or not. They are however also constantly replaced as you keep growing. There are however some bad habits that we do as youngsters that may increase hair fall: like combing your hair too often, pulling at your hair too strongly, shampooing everyday especially with strong and highly chemically based shampoos, improper diet, stress, not massaging your scalp (you need to gently do circular massage with your finger-tips everyday to strengthen the roots), is natural cleansers like shikkakai powder, liquids etc. Less exposure to direct sunlight, less use of hairsprays, hair gels, styling creams, and so on. You could also have a genetic factor inherited from your parents that will cause excess hair fall and baldness. You must also exercise regularly, sleep adequately, and eat well from the list below of good food for prevention: carrots, prunes, green peas, oats, shrimp, walnuts, eggs, chicken, low-fat dairy products, spinach, sweet potatoes, lentils, strawberry, oranges, papaya, blueberries, lime, kiwi fruit, mango, melon, broccoli, winter squash apricots, green and red peppers, millet, barley, wheat, cucumber, rice, bean sprouts, asparagus, black sesame seeds, garlic, cabbage, onions, turnips, lettuce, brussels sprouts, kale, seaweed, dry fruits, liver, salmon, tuna and oysters. Wow, that is indeed a good and exhaustive list.

People start smoking in teen age. How could we prevented them as we know it is an adolescence related problem.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
It is true that people get habituated to smoking in teen age or adolescent life due to peer pressure or media temptations. Please remember that smoking is toxic to your body, mind and well-being. The earlier you can stop this habit, the healthier it can be for you. The lower taste and sinful habit of smoking can be stopped by replacing it with the higher taste. Simply read nice books which give you a higher meaning to life than chemicals in smoking. In place of smoking, spend your time by doing yoga and chant the names of god who you have faith in. It has been scientifically proved that by doing yoga and chanting, the habit of smoking can be stopped. By chanting with love, soon you would be swimming in an ocean of pleasure which is million times greater than flickering pleasure of intoxicants like tobacco, nicotine etc in the smoking, and automatically the attraction to the low taste of smoking would stop.
