Best Flexibilty Exercises for Parkinsonism!

MAINTAINING THE FLEXIBILITY OF MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM IN PARKINSONISM

  • Flexibility of the musculoskeletal systems can be maintained by encouraging the patient to lead an active life. However passive exercise by the therapist or the relatives may be of help in maintaining or increasing flexibility. Passive exercise to the patient should be given at least 2 to 3 times in a day. As the patient has a predominantly flexed posture the mobility exercises should involve plenty of extension activity. Passive stretching should be given for all shortened muscles. Sometimes braces may be used for prolonged stretching of tight muscles. PNF technique of hold relax or contract relax can be used to bring about lengthening of contracted muscles and thus increase the ROM of various joint. PNF pattern of flexion abduction with elbow extension for the upper limb, extension abduction with knee extension for the lower limb and neck extension with rotation to either side should be emphasized to overcome the flexed posture of a Parkinsonism patient. During the extension movement the patient should be asked breath in. This will help in increasing the thoracic expansion of the patient.
  • Apart from passive exercise, the patient should be encouraged to maintain joint mobility through active exercises and auto stretching. Calisthenics exercises in supine, sitting or standing posture is of great use to patients of Parkinsonism. As there is an tendency in parkinsonism patients to develop overall flexed posture, this may be countered by various simple stretching programs like standing erect with arms in elevation against a wall or corner of the room, and the patient should try and stretch out his whole body. Also, the patient should be instructed to lie supine with a pillow under the upper thorax, which can play a significant role in stretching the upper limb and upper thoracic spine.

Do not take the advise of doctors lightly as they are very crucial. Lifting weights can cause serious cord compressions and permanant nerve damage. Kindly avoid heavy work as far as possible. Take care.

For back pain only sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. For emergency treatment contacts your nearest hospital or family doctor. I am 22 years old. I had migraine when I was 15 years old. Doctor prescribed me ct scan etc and medicines for 3 months regular. I took the medicine for 10-15 days after that it felt that pain is gone So I stopped taking medicine. But after that whenever I had headache it was always in some portion of head not full. Now a days I am again getting this type of headache. Is this due to the previous symptoms ?what should I do? And also I am always filled with anxiety and depression is this due to this? Kindly suggest me solution.

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
If you have recurrent attack of headache1. It could be a tension headache due to anxiety/stress, depression inadequate sleep, low bp/high bp, migraine, prolonged use of cell phone/computer, chronic anaemia, refractive error, chronic sinusitis, organic brain lesion 2. Avoid stress, physical and mental exertion, have adequate sound sleep for 7-8 hours daily in the night 3. Go for regular exercise 4. Practice yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercise to calm your mind, control your emotion and relieve stress 5. Check for refractive error, sinusitis hemoglobin, bp 6. Avoid prolonged use of cell phone/computer 7. Consult neurologist to rule out other causes of headache, if required take a ct scan /mri of brain to exclude any brain lesion 8. If it is migraine you have to take migraine prophylactic drug after consulting neurologist.

Most likely, the cause of your symptoms are disc bulge. The best treatment at this stage is physiotherapy. Medications such as pregabalin and gabapentin are also helpful.

I am 30 year old male working as Assistant professor in Computer science department and having epilepsy in the sense get jerks if I work in front of computer or got tensed. Tat jerk occurs and extends for just 2 to 10 seconds and leaves as it is. I use epitril Md in case if I got any symptoms. Please give me suggestions tat how to recover.

MBBS,J.R. Neurology
General Physician,
This seems to be a case of focal seizures and the triggering factor is either prolonged exposure to light or stress. Avoidance of the triggering factors is of prime importance. You have been prescribed clonazepam and that's quite apt. As said this is best cured by avoidance of precipitating factors and taking medications when they do occur. Take care.
