My right ear half gone as per audiometry test, now managing by left ear. Some docs say to continue like this so long it is manageable, some suggest to be on trial by hearing aid. My question will the left ear be damaged while other one takes the load?

Both the ears are equally contribute at the level of brain in normal people. In yo case left ear is doing his own with little extra effort for right. So it vl gradually deteriorate in future may b with a balance problem. God has given two ears for the holy purpose, if one is damaged supplement it. Go for the latest hearing test and use digital programmable hearing aids.

Conductive Hearing Loss - How It Can Be Treated?

Conductive Hearing Loss - How It Can Be Treated?

The ear has three parts – outer, middle, and inner – through which sounds waves pass through. On reaching the inner ear, the sound waves are transmitted through a fluid medium which is carried through to the brain to produce “sound.” Hearing loss can be due to problems anywhere in this circuit – from the outer ear to nerve issues in the middle ear.

There are two main types of hearing loss
Conductive hearing loss, where problems in the outer or middle ear cause problem conducting sound waves into the inner ear
Sensorineural hearing loss, where there is a problem in the nervous portion of the hearing process

Causes

Conductive hearing loss occurs due to poor conduction of sound waves to the middle ear, where it is processed to perceive the sound. Conductive hearing loss can happen due to the following reasons:

  1. Wax: Excessive wax accumulated in the outer ear can prevent passage of sound into the middle ear
  2. Infection: The outer or middle ear could be infected, affecting passage of sound waves
  3. Tear in the eardrum: The eardrum is a membrane through which sound waves pass. A tear due to trauma or injury can hamper this process, leading to hearing loss.
  4. Impact: When there is a bang on the head, there could be temporary hearing loss due to disruption of the hearing system
  5. Hereditary: A lot of times, hearing loss is hereditary and an exact cause may not be traceable
  6. Ear tumor: Middle ear tumors can also cause conductive hearing loss
  7. Abnormal growth: Abnormal bone growth in the middle ear can cause blockage, leading to hearing loss
  8. Post-surgical: The ear is a highly complex structure, and while surgical corrections are being done to treat a condition, it is very likely that other parts can be damaged

Symptoms

In most of the conditions mentioned above, there are some sound waves which pass through, so conductive hearing loss is often partial, wherein the person can hear but it is faint. Very rarely, it is complete where the person goes completely deaf.

Management

This would depend on the cause of the hearing loss.

  1. Clearing up the wax can lead to improved hearing
  2. A tear in the eardrum or fluid buildup would need surgical repair to restore hearing
  3. Infections might require treatment with antibiotics and pain killers
  4. Tumors or bone growths would also require surgical correction for restoring hearing
  5. For outer ear blocks, audiometry is done only after the blocks are cleared
  6. If post correction, the hearing is not completely restored, hearing aids can be used, which often results in complete restoration. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.

I suffered from Sensori-Neural Hearing loss in left ear last year in October due to viral infection. I got treatment with Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and steroid injections. I recovered only partial hearing. Is there any possibility of complete recovery. I am suffering from tinnitus since then. Is there any scope of recovery?

MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Recovery after sudden sensory neural hearing loss is usually not complete and residual hearing loss is common. If tinnitus persists try tinnitus masking devices.

I have some hearing problem I can hear sound but can't understand what they are telling.
Hi generally we understand hearing in frequencies and hertz. Our day to day activities includes different sounds in which speech is one of the important things we hear. Different sounds are at different frequences. So if we have hearing with in that range of these sounds only then we can hear these particular sounds if not we miss them or sometimes we even miss particpular words or sounds in the spoken speech. You seem to have hearing loss. Consult an audiologist who would assist you with the tests required and may explain you in detail about your hearing.

Hello, you recently got tinnitus problem in both ear, and your audiogram suggests mild cond. Hg. Loss, ok. Tinnitus may be seen in normal individuals and patients with hearing loss and its actual cause is unknown. Chronic noise exposure plays a vital role in tinnitus problem. It can only be prevented by relaxation therapy, living stress free whole day, you can also listen to slow music to reduce your perception of tinnitus sound etc.

Hearing Aids - How Can They Improve Quality of Life?

Hearing has a deep impact on your life. It determines the kind of life you are going to lead. It has been found by various studies and surveys that hearing aids drastically improve the quality of life you lead. It is the much needed relief to a life, burdened by the stress and strains of living with hearing impairment. The hearing aids are not just instruments. This is a way to live a life of dignity. According to the Evaluation of the Social and Economic Costs of Hearing Impairment report, hearing loss leads to socio and economic stress in ones’ life in major continents like Europe, Australia and the United States.

A research conducted by the National Council on Aging found that over 2,000 people living with hearing impairment or loss experienced positive changes in their respective lives after using hearing aids. They experienced improvements in social, emotional, psychological and physical spheres of life. Furthermore, a US study claims that nine in ten people using hearing aid say that their life has changed for the better after using the aids. It can also be said that hearing aid users lead a better life than non-users of these aids.

How these aids better your life?
Hearing aids gift you a life of expressions and dignity. They can connect you to the rest of the world and empower you to maintain your individualism. You are empowered to make your point in front of others and understand their perspectives too. Here’s what a hearing aid can do for you:

Users of hearing aids have a better life as they have improved cognitive functioning. The family members claim that the users of these aids become more interactive. They are lesser of an introvert than the non-users.

  1. It improves the social life of user. He or she can participate in group activities and their family and other ties or relationships go smooth. There is no communication gap.
  2. Hearing aids build up your confidence. You regain your lost dignity and faith on your abilities. Hearing loss kicks you to a life of loneliness, alienation and leaves you with low confidence levels.
  3. It helps you in having better psychological functioning. It keeps you away from psychological problems like depression, personality disorders and over-all absurd behavioural changes.
  4. It improves the understanding in closer or personal relationships. The warmth in a relationship is regained or bettered with effective communication. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.
