6 Tips to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

6 Tips to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

We live in an age where every single individual, more or less, is exposed to the risk of cancer. It is probably an unfavorable lifestyle we lead that deprives us of good health. This might alarm many but considerable changes in lifestyle can help you realize cancer as a preventable disease. Cancer does not only make you undergo severe suffering but it also affects your friends and family. The pallor of misery spreads wider than you think.

  • Abstain from tobacco: Consuming raw tobacco or smoking tobacco can be equally detrimental to your health. Tobacco increases your chances of contracting the disease. As is known, passive smoking can also affect your health adversely. Tobacco can be the potential cause behind cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, lungs, oral cavity and even the pancreas. It might harm your kidneys and cervix. It is upon you to quit tobacco at the earliest possible. One should also try and persuade friends and relatives to give up smoking.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation: Complete abstinence from alcohol might not be possible if you have already been ushered into your work- life. The society might require you to be an occasional drinker. It is important to drink in moderation. Crossing the limit can propel consequences as serious as cancer of the stomach, pancreas, liver and the heart.
  • A balanced and nutritious diet: Deciding on a plant- based diet or a Mediterranean diet can aid your fight against the risk of cancer. A Mediterranean diet will involve green leafy vegetables, lots of fresh fruits, whole grains, mixed nuts, legumes and also the use of extra- virgin olive oil. Fish can be a safe bet but red meat should be avoided. One must also try to avoid processed meat as they tend to make you prone to the risk of cancer.
  • Immunization: Hepatitis B and HPV or Human papilloma virus vaccines are extremely necessary to protect you against the sexually transmitted types of cancer.
  • Sun protection: Caring for your skin doesn't arise from vanity. Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent kinds of cancer; the chances of this disease can be restricted by remaining in shade especially during midday, by wearing covered clothes and by using a good sunscreen lotion repeatedly while outside.
  • Exercise diligently: Did you think it was okay to have weaker muscles and bulging layers of fat? If yes, you probably have grown numb to the inadequacies you face in result. Unchecked fat can lead to obesity which further complicates health conditions. Metabolic activity differs from person to person. Regular exercising can help regulate metabolism according to the needs of your body. Physical exercise protects you against the risk of breast and colon cancer. Moderate or vigorous physical activity for 150 to 75 minutes a week respectively can reduce the risk of cancer. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

My mother had breast cancer and her left breast was removed due to this. What are the chances that I may have the same problem. I am 48 years old.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, FIAGES(Fellowship in minimal access surgery), FMAS (Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery)

hi. thats a very good question. see if first degree relative had breast cancer then your risk increases by 10 to 15 times. so do regular breast self examination and get a mammography done if you are above 40 yrs. Do not ignore symptoms like breast lump, irregular menstrual cycles , unprecedented wt loss or loss of appetite.

I am suffering with prostrate of 124 cc , doctor suggested for lazer surgery. is there any treatment other than surgery? I have problem in passing the urine. At preent I am talking urimax capsule in a day and feel relief.

MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Hubli-Dharwad
the most important thing is is the prostate enlargement is a benign one or malignant one , if benign one and you are ok with urimax then you can still pend surgery till mentally prepared, but if malignant then Radiotherapy is an alternative to surgery with same result. so cofirm me if biopsy is done and serum PSA is done?

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, not every acute pain, in and around anus, is due to cancer. I would advise that you consult a gastro-intestinal (GI) specialist or any general surgeon to clinically examine your condition and recommend treatment apropos. For the time being, ensure to have a healthy & balanced diet (preferably Mediterranean) including fresh leafy greens and fruits. Especially, fibrous foods help avoid constipation issues, if any. Also, stay well hydrated, exercise daily and relax. Take care to not strain while passing stool. Post going to toilet, you may sit for a few minutes in a bowl of clean and luke warm water to which a few drops of 'dettol' solution is added. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely,

My husband is 34, once, when he spit, he noticed a pinky substance coming out. Please tell whether it is a symptom of cancer ?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Needs to be screened by sputum analysis, chest xray and head and neck examination. Pinky sputum may indicate bleeding, from any site, may be bleeding gums, so go for evaluation before getting scared

My girlfriend had a severe pain in her left breast just upper left side of the nipple 1 year and 4 months ago. She consulted a doctor 4 months later. The doctor said that it may be a tumour and if not treated it could turn into a tumour and later breast cancer. So the doctor gave him some allopathic medicines and told that it would work and control the tumour. The doctor also suggested her mother to tie the knot as soon as possible. After marriage she will overcome this problem. But marriage is not happened. She took the medicine for 4 months. She got relief. But now 1 year later she got the pain again and severe pain. The tumour is hard and painful. It takes the size of a 5 rupees vaseline jar. Today the cold is enough and she has a lot of pain. Does it relate to her period?

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help for your girlfriend. Well, did she undergo any diagnostics including a mammography / biopsy? What do the diagnostics say? Should it be a fibroadenoma, it is advisable to get it removed before it causes other complications down the line. I would advise that you consult a breast oncologist this time for a second expert opinion, and deal promptly as the situation demands. For the time being, should the pain be unbearable, she may apply an alternating heat and cold treatment for couple of minutes that may alleviate pain. She needs to stay well hydrated, and take 'Amla Churna' (Patanjali) & 'Bael Churna (Patanjali- 1/2 tsp each with warm water, preferably before lunch daily for next 1 month. Simultaneously, keep her diet and lifestyle streamlined, she can take tomato soup to which fresh herbs like garlic, turmeric, black pepper, ginger, coriander leaves and oregano has been added, once daily. Her doc shall be able to advise further on, in particular, once he/ she gets to clinically examine her in person once more. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely

It is not cancer, as it has pain with menstruation it is most probably fibroadenoma, a benign tumor. Do not worry about that as it will be got reduced in future.

Cancer Treatment Through Alternative Medicine!

Cancer Treatment Through Alternative Medicine!

Cancer is becoming the disease of modern times as with changing lifestyles, more and more people are developing this disease. Research has shown up multiple options, but these options are not without side effects. Cases of immunosuppression, weight loss, hair loss, etc., are just a few of them. Therefore, there is constant work being done to identify alternate methods of arresting cancer and preventing it.

While these alternate methods do not help in curing cancer, they definitely help in managing the signs and symptoms of cancer. This makes a lot of sense as even with conventional treatments, beyond a certain point, chemotherapy only helps in palliation and is not a complete cure.

  1. Acupuncture: This practice of inserting needles at specific points in the body helps in relieving nausea caused by cancer and also helps improve pain to a large extent. However, this should not be used in people who are on anticoagulants and have poor platelet count. Getting an experienced person to do it is also very essential.
  2. Exercise: The chronic fatigue, which sets in with cancer, can be greatly reduced by regular exercise. Talk to a private physician to identify what would work for you, taking into account overall status and plan accordingly. This will also improve sleep patterns and your overall quality of life.
  3. Hypnosis: For extreme stress and anxiety induced by cancer, hypnosis is a good option. It helps calm the mind and soothes the body to relax completely. It also helps in reducing the nausea and vomiting that is often associated with chemotherapy.
  4. Ayurveda: Ayurveda has multiple proven substances, which are known to detox the system and control cancer growth cells.
  5. Massage: Superficial and deep massage have definite benefits in chemotherapy. This relieves the muscle tension and stress associated with chemotherapy. Specific conditions like bone condition, pain type, etc., have to be taken into account before planning for this. Also invest in a good experience personnel to do this, as wrong hands may cause more damage.
  6. Meditation: The deep breathing and relaxation that happens with meditation helps control stress and anxiety in people with cancer. The advantage is that it can be done by the person at any time, anywhere, without investing in any equipment.
  7. Yoga: By combining body movements with relaxation techniques, yoga does wonders for the body. It improves agility, improves mental alertness, controls anxiety, improves metabolism, and is an effective detoxification method. A good yoga instructor can help in designing the right program to get the maximum benefits.
  8. Music therapy: Whether it is simple listening to music, writing songs, or playing an instrument, music has its healing powers. Having a group also helps as a form of supportive therapy. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Homoeopathy for Cancer

Cancer is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. Cancer is classified according to the organ affected (e.g. Prostate cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer etc) or type of tissue or cells involved (e.g. Adenocarcinoma of lungs, astrocytoma, osteosarcoma) or according to the stage of disease (usually stage I to IV). The prognosis and treatment of different types and stages of cancer varies.

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine which has been used by many practitioners to treat cancer patients. There are historical accounts about homeopathy treatment of cancer and modern literature also gives several case studies of homeopathy for cancer treatment.

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic remedies for cancer are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions. The homeopathic remedies for cancer given below indicate the therapeutic affinity but this is not a complete and definite guide to the treatment of this condition. The symptoms listed against each remedy may not be directly related to this disease because in homeopathy general symptoms and constitutional indications are also taken into account for selecting a remedy. None of these homeopathic remedies for cancer should be taken without professional advice.

Homeopathic remedies for cancer

Following is the list of some common used homeopathic remedies for cancer.

Calcarea flour, conium, lapis albus, hecla lava, silicea, phytolacca, condurango, baryta carb, baryta mur, mercurius, carcinocin, schirrinum, thuja, hydrastis, plumbum iod, arsenicum album, phosphorus etc.

If you have any questions about the treatment, ask me by clicking on consult.

My father is suffering with neck cancer, he has gone through radiation 7 chemo last year, but 3 months after completing the radiation he had breathing problem and thus has gone through trachestomy, but since trachestomy has been done he is suffering with lots of pain in the neck and we also have to do suction every hour or so, can you advise some medicines or device which can reduce his pain & problems.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
What is the status of disease post chemo-radiation, have you got a direct laryngoscopy done to know the cause of breathing difficulty and what is thestatus of lungs. If both are disease free then tracheostomy can be closed once radiation edema settles down with steroids, nebulization and steam inhalation. If residual disease then he would require further treatment. Pain should be managed with good analgesics.
