No usually painful breasts is not suggestive of cancer. Usually it is related to hormonal changes and occurs before periods. However, if it persists then you need to see a gynaecologist for evaluation and treatment.

I'm 62years lady. Just diagnosed with 2A stage cancer in one breast n going to remove that breast. Please suggest is chemo compulsory in cancer for permanent cure.

MBBS, MS- Surgery , M.Ch - Surgical Oncology , FIAGES
Oncologist, Delhi
Treatment for breast cancer is multimodality. Surgery is mainstay with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy, targetted therapy, radiation therapy and/or hormone therapy depending on individual case risk factors. Mastectomy: most commonly modified radical mastectomy which removes breast tissue along with lymph nodes in the axilla. After mastectomy whole breast reconstruction is and immediate or delayed option. Breast conservation surgery: involves removal of tumor along with surrounding tissue to completely remove the tumor. Axillary lymph nodes are addressed through separate incision. Sentinel lymph node biopsy/ axillary sampling: to decrease morbidities of lymph node dissection first draining lymph nodes only are removed in patients with clinically negative axilla. If negative on frozen section further axillary dissection is avoided.

My cousin had noticed that he has cancer at stage of 3. The doctor planned to give radiation therapy. After that, a surgery to keep colostomy bag. He is 23 years old. Doctor asked him to save his sperms for future. Is there any possibility to avoid keeping colostomy bag?how long will he lead his life?

UICC International Fellow in Oncollogy , ESTRO certification in Head and neck oncology, MD - Radiothrapy

He might be having ca rectum. If sphincter saving is possible after radiation, colostomy can be avoided. Sperms should be preserved in sperm bank. Please send ct scan / pet scan report and biopsy report.

Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution - Understanding The Risk!

MD - Oncology

Lung Cancer and Outdoor Air Pollution - Understanding The Risk!

Lung cancer is the cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S. When you think of risk factors for lung cancer, what comes to mind? Most of us think about the risk associated with smoking cigarettes, but did you know that air pollution can also cause lung cancer? Overwhelming evidence shows that particle pollution in the outdoor air we breathe—like that coming from vehicle exhaust, coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources can cause lung cancer. Particle pollution increases the risk of dying early, heart disease and asthma attacks, and it can also interfere with the growth and function of the lungs.

What is particle pollution?

Particle pollution is a mix of tiny solid and liquid particles in the air and can be made up of a number of components, such as acids, organic chemicals, metals, soil and dust particles. It can be emitted directly from wood stoves, forest fires, vehicles and other sources, and it can also form from other types of pollution that come from sources like power plants.

Why does particle pollution harm our bodies?

While breathing in larger sizes of particle pollution can be harmful to our health, smaller particles are more dangerous. Bigger particles can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, but our natural defenses help us to cough or sneeze them out of our bodies. Unfortunately, those defenses don't keep out smaller particles, which get trapped deep in the lungs and can even get into the bloodstream, causing damage to our health.

Who is most at risk?

As for who is at risk for health problems from breathing in particle pollution. Those who live where particle pollution levels are high is at risk. Some people face higher risk, including children, the elderly, people with lung and heart disease and diabetes, people with low incomes, and people who work or exercise outdoors.

How do we protect ourselves from particle pollution?

Check the air quality index forecast for the day and limit your activity if pollution levels are high. Avoid exercising along heavily traveled highways regardless of the overall forecast.

As individuals, we can play our part in reducing air pollution levels by trying to avoid creating more of it. Choosing ‘active travel’ options where possible, like walking and cycling, can help reduce pollution levels from transport and is also a great way to be more active, which is linked to a reduced risk of cancer and other diseases.

Dear Sir/Mam Which types of diet is good after or in between chemotherapy. Please suggest me all the food supplements.

MD PHYSICIAN
General Physician, Delhi
Choose whole grain breads and cereals. Drink 100% fruit or vegetable juices. (Make sure they are pasteurized because you may be more susceptible to germs while you’re getting cancer treatment.) Fill half of your plate with vegetables and fruits. A few times a week, choose meatless meals such as vegetarian lasagna or vegetable stir-fry. Have a leafy green salad with dinner unless you have been told to avoid raw foods. Limit sugary foods -- the kind with lots of calories but very little nutrition. Pick lean meats and fish over fatty red meat and processed meats. Conquer constipation by drinking water and eating high-fiber foods like beans, lentils, vegetables, and fresh or dried fruit. Drive away diarrhea with bland foods such as rice, bananas, and apples. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Protect mouth sores and manage dry mouth by grinding or pureeing foods to make them easier to swallow. Or eat foods that are already soft and mostly liquid, like soups and milk or yogurt shakes. Nix nausea by choosing bland foods and foods without strong odors. Steer clear of greasy foods. Go easy on your stomach by eating small meals throughout the day. Drink plenty of water even if you are vomiting.

Top 5 Ways To Survive Chemotherapy

MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Top 5 Ways To Survive Chemotherapy

If you are undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment, it is likely for you to experience and feel its ill effects on your body. Chemotherapy refers to the use of several medicines and drugs which are used in cancer treatment. Although chemotherapy is considered to be effective for improving cancer, it is associated with fatal side effects on the body. There are certain practices to follow in order to get through and survive chemotherapy, thereby inflicting less harm to your body. They are as follows:

  1. Drink fluids: You need to drink large amounts of fluids at a rate which you think is beyond your body’s capacity. This helps in flushing out toxins from your system quickly, which will make you feel better. If you have a hard time drinking water, you should opt for fluids such as popsicles, broth, fruit juice and ginger ale.

  2. Consume bland food: During chemotherapy, your craving for food and your appetite reduces. However, you can make a difference by eating. You should try eating bland and mushy food items, such as pudding, oatmeal, white potatoes, white bread and yoghurt. Do not eat fruits for the first few days after chemotherapy.

  3. Find an outlet for your pain: You should find out vents or outlets for the pain and misery you are going through. Some people like to write about their emotions and feelings in the form of online blogs. By doing so, they get to share their feelings with other people online, which is a good form of support.

  4. Dress comfortably: It is sometimes difficult for you to accept that you are a patient. You may want to avoid looking like a sick patient and want to get dressed up. However, this is kind of ridiculous and you should try to dress comfortably instead of trying to cover up your condition. Bring a blanket to the chemotherapy room and wear socks.

  5. Exercise: Although you will not feel like working out and straining yourself because of weakness, exercise is very important for you. It helps in making you feel better as your blood circulation gets regulated properly, which results in the faster elimination of toxins from the body. You should try yoga or at least walk for 30 minutes regularly.

It is also very important for you to take your medicines properly. This will help you get back your strength and energy. You should be gentle with yourself and believe that you will be able to survive what you are going through. Give your body the time to heal.

Radiation Therapy for Tumor Patients - All You Need To Know!

MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Coimbatore
Radiation Therapy for Tumor Patients - All You Need To Know!

Radiation therapy is used for destroying the brain tumor cells, and relieves the symptoms of discomfort and pain caused by the tumor. Radiation is usually used after biopsy or resection of the tumor. This is done to destroy the microscopic cells of the tumor which have been left behind. Sometimes this is also an option for unresectable brain tumors or the metastatic tumors which spread to the brain from other parts of the body.

The radiation therapy is planned on several factors like the size and type of the tumor and the extent to which it has spread. Usually external beam radiation is used for the brain cancer and the area radiated involves the tumor and the surrounding area. In case of a metastatic brain cancer the radiation is given to the entire brain. People who have lung cancer receive radiation in the brain as a preventive therapy in order to stop the metastatic cancer from developing.

Side effects of brain cancer radiation
Depending on the site, dose, and other factors the radiation therapy when given to the brain might cause side effects. Hair loss, fatigue, edema, skin irritations are a few common side effects of brain tumor radiation. In some cases some people might develop swelling of the ankle, foot, calf and blood clots in the leg.

What is radiation therapy?
Radiation therapy is basically the use of targeted energy like X-ray and radioactive substances to kill the cancer cells, or shrink them or change the symptoms related to cancer. This therapy might be used as:

  1. Primary treatment for the destruction of the cancer cells
  2. In combination with other ongoing treatments to inhibit the growth of the cancer cells
  3. Prior to another treatment to shrink the cancer cells
  4. Post some treatment to stop the growth of any cancer cells that have been left behind
  5. To relieve cancer symptoms

Types of radiation
Some of the radiation methods commonly used are:

  1. External beam radiation therapy: In this the radiation is directed from outside the body on the cancerous cells in the body. Some examples of this are IMRT, TomoTherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, 3D conformal radiation therapy and IGRT.
  2. Internal radiation therapy: In this the radioactive substance is placed close to the tumor with the help of a catheter or some carrier. Examples of this are high-dose rate brachytherapy.
  3. Systemic radiation therapy: In this a radioactive substance is injected or swallowed, which further locates and destroys the cancerous cells. Example of this is radioactive iodine therapy.
  4. Managing radiation side effects: Radiation therapy in some cases can cause unpleasant side effects like fatigue and nausea. Thus it should be kept in mind that maximum radiation doses should be given with less or little impact on the healthy tissues. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Oncologist.

Are there screening tests that can find lung cancer early? How many people get lung cancer?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, early diagnosis of lung cancer can be made by screening chest xray, but it shouldn't be done very frequently as there is risk of radiation exposure so annually once is fine unless there is some problems like cough, blood in sputum, voice change, breathing difficulty etc. Lung cancer is the most common cancers relatrd deaths amongst males and the incidence is amongst males in nearly 7percent of all cancers.

My question is that have any doctor came across a person who masturbated more than 5 times a day for more than 5 years. And he got any type of urological or adrenal gland cancer. If there please tell me.

BHMS
Homeopath, Raebareli
My question is that have any doctor came across a person who masturbated more than 5 times a day for more than 5 year...
Please note that 5 times a day for continuously 5 years is close to impossible. Secondly even if what you say is half correct then surely he is going to have ed/pe/enlarge prostate. However cancer is not possible by excessive masturbation.
