How To Nurture Healthy Eating Habits In Toddlers?

DDPHN, M.Sc.(Food and Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Bangalore

In most instances it has been found that the habits we inculcate during childhood  are carried to adulthood, so, it becomes all the more  important in parenting to nurture good eating habits and expose toddlers to healthy foods. Being a parent we can inculcate healthy eating habits in our children. For this you can try these:

  • Check the refrigrator: Try your best to keep only healthy snacks/foods so that even if the child  opens the fridge his choice is healthy .Avoid keeping excess cold drinks, chocolates etc.
  • Be a role model: Always set a good eating example for your child to copy ,share the meal time and eat the same healthy food. Try to avoid foods in front of children that you don’t intend to give them.
  • Make boring food interesting: Try to make daily routine food interesting for the toddlers ,for example one can make a cute smiley on the vegetable sandwich you intend to serve to your child.
  • Awareness: Parents must be aware about the food available in market. You must be in habit to read labels before buying. Take your child to grocery shopping and inculcate habit of reading labels in them also, make them aware of importance of these labels.
  • Involvement of child: Involve your child in preparing meals as they may be more willing to eat or try foods that they help to prepare.
  • Food as reward or punishment: Try not to use food as reward or punishment for your child. Like sending your child to bed without dinner as a punishment may make them to eat whenever they get a chance, similarly sweets or dessert should not be used as reward for finishing vegetables as child may assume that these foods are more valuable and this will unknowingly sent wrong message .
  • Eat meals together often: Make meal times pleasant with conversation and sharing, not a time for scolding or arguing.
  • Encourage: Encourage your child to eat slowly this will give brain time to register fullness.
  • Free your child: Sometimes or on occasions, festivities as you are restricting them on a daily basis, you only worry about daily routine and not holidays.

Hi Sir, My baby is 10 month old ,he was suffering from cold and vomited 5 times in past 2 days, and suddenly his eyes...
Hello lybrate-user, The symptoms you have described certainly point towards a neurological problem. Repeated vomiting is often caused by increased pressure around the brain (Medical term- Intracranial Pressure) and leads to 6th nerve palsy, which means squinting of one or both eyes towards the nose. Patching is done so that child does not suffer from double vision. Spectacles have no role in this. In most conditions, These nerve palsies recover spontaneously in few months without squint surgery. However, you need to keep a close watch on the child's general condition. In case of any abnormal behaviour, consult a neurologist/ pediatric neurologist. Feel free to contact me in case of any doubt. I would like to see the child's photograph before and after developing the squint to guide you better.

Better to stick on to breast feeding. Sometimes babies pass stools once in 4-5 days especially if fed with artificial milk. No need to worry for 1 day.

Common Allergies in Children That You Should Know!

Common Allergies in Children That You Should Know!

A rash on your child’s body or their regular cough bouts can sometimes be triggered by an allergy. We can excuse it by calling it a common flu or a heat rash, but the reason behind it might be something you are not aware of. Your child might be allergic, and it is imperative for you to find out that exact thing your child is allergic to, it can be dust, nuts that you may think is beneficial for your child’s health or even the fabric of the clothes you put on them. Allergies are caused when children come in contact with allergens, which can he inhaled, injected or even eaten unknowingly. If you see any of the symptoms of allergies, consult your doctor at the earliest and do not treat it lightly.

Some common triggers for allergies

These are divided into four groups

  1. Foods: Certain foods like peanuts, eggs, milk and it products which you feed your child might be triggering their allergy.
  2. Outdoors: When kids play outside pollens from trees or flowers might causes allergies. Even insect bites and stings are a major trigger
  3. Indoors: Animal fur or hair and even dust mites and mold that exist in your house can trigger an allergy
  4. Irritants: Common irritants like cigarette smoke, perfumes or even car exhaust should be watched out for.

Symptoms of common allergies

  1. Nasal Congestion: It is referred to as stuffy nose, which is very common in kids. Allergies are the most common cause of chronic nasal congestion (a stuffy nose) in children. Sometimes a child’s nose is congested to the point that he or she breathes through the mouth, especially while sleeping.
  2. Allergic rhinitis (hay fever): It is also common and its symptoms include a runny or itchy nose and constant sneezing. A child with allergies may also have itchy, watery, red eyes and chronic ear problems. Even though it’s commonly known as “hay fever,” allergic rhinitis isn’t triggered by hay and doesn’t cause fever.

If you suspect your child has an allergy, make an appointment to see a specialist. Start a diary before the appointment and keep track of what symptoms your child experiences and what you think causes them.
