Sir my TG level Is 228 & Uric Acid level is 6.9
my age is 22 years now. What kind of food should I avoid or to intake...
Your triglyceride level is high and your uric acid level is also on borderline because uric acid normal level is 3.5-7 mg/dl in male. The after effect of hiving triglyceride is to you may get hardening of arteries over a period of time which we call atherosclerosis and which means hardening of arteries, which causes hypertension. If you improve your HDL with certain, we can improve it like almonds and we have to correct fundamentally the lipid metabolism. You must work hard to have food on time as no medicine can ever help you to get rid of the bad effects of irregular lifestyle. Overall having a right constitutional homoeopathic treatment will help you to improve this situation in a great extent.

Your thyroid results normal because you are taking thyroid hormone if you stop taking your medicine your results will be more or less same as before. Hence please continue your medicines and get your TSH testing regularly. To reduce weight diet control you also necessary along with exercise. Your diet should be low calorie, low fat and high fibre. I am 27 years old with normal t3 and t4 but tsh is 13. I am gaining some weight for some time now. I know I am suffering from hypothyroidism. I have no medical history and I don't take any medicine. Sometimes I have high BP and since childhood I have joint pain. I have decided to go for morning walks and healthy food habits. Will it work or I need medicine for hypothyroidism. Are my tsh levels serious at this age?

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is good to know that you are aware of having hypothyroidism. This a hormone (Thyroxine) deficiency disease, hence there is a need for supplementation of that hormone on daily basis for lifetime. Adapting a modified lifestyle with regular exercise and proper die etc, is good but that will not "cure" hypothyroidism or even prevent t. There is no option but take levothyroxine tablets in a specified dose daily for lifetime. Otherwise all the problems associated with hypothyroidism will be troubling for the whole life. These include weight gain, swelling of face, lower limbs, sluggish heart rate, tiredness, fatigue, dry skin & hair, hair fall, muscle and joint pains, intolerance to cold, anxiety, difficulty in speech and in concentration and many more. So my suggestion is please initiate the treatment right away. Thanks.

My age is 60 years and I am suffering from diabetic. I want to know how can I take care of my body in diabetes.
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For a person with diabetes it is necessary to do things mentioned below: 1) First and foremost is to achieve a strict blood glucose control with FBG < 100 mg, PP 160 to 180 mg & HbA1c% < 7. 2) Take a restricted diet that meets exact caloric needs based on the ideal body weight, extent of daily exercise and blood glucose levels. 3) Avoid sweets, deep fired foods, junk foods, pastries, bakery items, foods made out of maida, colas, fructose corn syrup containing products. 4) Exercise regularly for at lease 1 hour a day, brisk walking is an excellent option. Maintain your weight near normal. 5) Increase the intake of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 g a day) 6) Refrain from alcohol and smoking. 7) Take the prescribed medication regularly without missing a dose. 8) Do a periodic check up of blood glucose, HbA1c% and lipid profile. If one follows all the above guidelines meticulously, then it is possible to live a fairly normal and healthy life with diabetes. If you have any questions do come back. Thanks.

Thanks for the query. It is good to know that you are looking for a baby. For that please understand that it is absolutely essential to achieve a very good control of hypothyroidism. Your TSh should be maintained around 2 mU/L, for conception to occur and even during the pregnancy too TSH has to be maintained around that, for proper development of the fetus and healthy expected out come of the pregnancy. So you will have to increase the dose of thyroxine to 50 mcg, then check TSH after 6 weeks. If it has come down o the level mentioned above, then it is good. If not there has to be a further increase in the dose. Simultaneously you need to exercise and take a restricted diet, so that you are able to loos at least 5 to 7 kgs of weight, before conception sets in. If you have any doubts please do come back. Thanks.

LCHF diet has been proved to be good for diabetes. However it needs close monitoring and expert advice from a nutritionist or dietitian because if done wrongly it can affect other organs of the body. There is also a need to go for carb cycling during this diet every once in 15 days. For further details you can consult me online or on private chat.

Hi my mom is having diabetes. She was on medicine. She was having Glynase -MF 1 and half tablet twice a day. But from last few days she is having a lot urine at night. She is having a loss of weight as well. If there is any cut or injury its taking a lot of time to recover and heal. We did the fasting and blood test. Test results:- Haemoglobin= 11.5 gms% = 78%(By Hellige Method) True Glucose (Fasting):- 260 mgm% We are not sure about the type of diabetes. She is herself a nurse. Help me with a suggestion what should we do? Should we do a C-peptide test first? Before taking any medication. Suggestions please.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Since she has been taking oral anti-diabetic drugs for controlling blood glucose, it has to T2 diabetes. In T1 only Insulin Injection has to be given. No other drug works. She now has an uncontrolled diabetes that is the reason for excess urination at night and weight loss, because more of glucose is being lost in the urine. She needs to achieve a strict blood glucose control with FBG < 100 mg, PP 170 to 180 mg & HbA1c% <7. That means there has to be a change in the current treatment. New drugs have to be added or Insulin may have to be started. There are other options also, but in this communication we are supposed to give general guidelines only. No prescriptions are allowed. If you are keen for improving her blood glucose levels and achieve better control, please come in a private conversation with following details: FBG, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary pattern extent of exercise or physical activity, lipid profile, BP readings. Based on those details I will be able to guide specifically and help improve the condition. There is no need for C- peptide testing. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. There is really no food item or fruit is actually banned for a diabetic person. But certain foods which have a high glycemic index, meaning they convert to sugar (glucose) rapidly in the gut, are to be avoided. Plus it is always good to consume complex carbs as those take long time to get digested to glucose, hence cause a slow increase in the blood glucose levels. Peanuts are good enough about 30 g plus can be taken per day. Good in protein and fats. Beet Root is comparatively sugar rich root vegetable. Should be taken sparingly. Small banana once a while may be fine. But it is converted to glucose very rapidly, hence better to be avoided. Carrot about 50 to 100 g a day may be fine. Not more. Thanks.

I have hashimoto thyroiditis. Total thyroidectomy 3 years ago. My tsh is 180 and stays that level. Feel awful and er does not seem to care. Im on synthroid 200 mcg. Is something I should be worried about?

MBBS, MD

Usual requirent of thyroid hormone is less than 200 micrograms for hypothyroid. And it seldom requires 300 micrograms or more, and in that situation one should look for malabsorption, drug interaction or poor compliane as the cause. Please consult an Endocrinologist.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Diabetes means excess blood glucose. It needs appropriate drugs and diet control plus regular exercise to achieve strict blood glucose control. There are really no health drinks that I can think of. Protein powder with no sugar with milk can be a good heath support drink, that too after strict blood glucose control. Eating a balanced diet is best nutrition. Increased intake of green leafy vegetables and permitted fruits (100 g a day) is good. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Diabetes does spread in families. There is a definite familial trait. If one of the parent has diabetes then 50% of the offsprings are likely to get it. So if there are two children then one of them may or mostlikely to get it. However, it is (T2) a preventable condition. That is if a person adapts modified lifestyle, by maintaining normal weight, exercising regularly, avoiding too much of sweets, then junk foods, pastries, bakery items, colas, foods made of maida, refrains form alcohol and smoking then diabetes can be prevented Thanks.

Infertility - Ayurvedic Herbs For It!

Infertility is a medical condition which is characterised by problems in successful conception, even after prolonged and frequent unprotected sex amongst a couple. Infertility may occur due to problems with either the male, the female partner and in many cases both of them. This condition can cause much strife in a relationship not just within the individuals but also be a cause for social embarrassment. The causes of infertility could be-

  1. Testicular injury or deformed testis,

  2. Irregular menstrual periods,

  3. Problems with erections,

  4. Uterus is ill-shaped,

  5. Premature ejaculation,

  6. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome,

  7. Pelvic inflammatory diseases caused by Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia,

  8. Scanty sperm count,

  9. Thyroid disorders,

  10. Blockage of the fallopian tube.

Other lifestyle related reasons could be excessive alcohol consumption, aging, diabetes, obesity, high pressure and as a side effect of radiation therapy or other medications.

Ayurveda and Infertility-

According to Ayurvedic scriptures, infertility occurs when there is a deficiency of nutrients in the Shukra Dhatu of an individual. This might occur as a result of indigestion and excessive toxic content in the human body. This could be caused due to excessive consumption of spicy foods or if they have chronic stress or anxiety. The Ayurvedic remedies boost the nutrition of the Shukra Dhatu in order to boost fertility. The most potent Ayurvedic herbs which can cure infertility are as follows:

  1. A prescribed consumption of the powder of dried banyan bark along with sugar might help to cure infertility.

  2. The inclusion of cumin and turmeric powder in regulated dosages in your daily food might also help to facilitate fertility.

  3. A consumption of the root of the herb Ashwagandha for 3 times a day has also been shown to be beneficial.

  4. A daily consumption of the powder of Vanari Kalpa in warm milk might help in curing any problems related to the ejaculation of semen.

  5. Consuming a mixture of the powder of Vrushya vati in warm milk, it might help to increase the sperm count.

  6. The consumption of Ayurvedic preparation of phalasarpi (a mixture of the herbs Kustha, manjistha, Triphala, tagara, haldi etc.) might help to deal with the problems of infertility in women.

  7. Yoga also has many effective asanas or poses which help boost both male and female fertility and thus may help in correcting infertility caused due to physical factors such as injuries or deformities.

  8. Changes in lifestyle also have to be brought in such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption among others.

Effects of Diabetes on Kidneys: What Are The Difference Between?

MBBS, CCEBDM
Diabetologist, Bangalore
Effects of Diabetes on Kidneys: What Are The Difference Between?

Each tiny action we commit involves the risk of a condition, disease or disorder. For instance, sneezing a bit too hard can rupture an eye vessel, or having your face right up against the wind in a moving bus can expose you to germs. Diabetes is as prevalent as common cold in every household and there is no end to the list of causes that can make you suffer from it. While regular check-ups, medications, insulin shots can help you cope, there are certain measures that if followed, can enable you to avoid the risk of secondary yet fatal diseases. Diabetic nephropathy is one such condition.

When Kidney is affected to the extent that it cannot perform its functions(like excretion of wastes in urine, filtering blood from waste, maintaining electrolyte balance, etc.) properly, it is called as Nephropathy. The reason behind kidney damage could be many, but if diabetes is the prime cause, it is known as diabetic nephropathy in medical terms.

A few features of this disorder are as follows:

  1. The kidneys comprise of several small blood vessels, which perform the function of sifting waste from your blood. Diabetes at an advanced stage can impede smooth functioning of these vessels. As a result, the kidneys malfunction or a person faces kidney failure.
  2. Nephropathy brings along some other health issues as well. A person's blood pressure may increase as a result, thus making him or her prone to heart attacks and strokes. Sharp rise in cholesterol and triglyceride levels has also been noticed.
  3. A doctor will check for the presence of a protein called albumin in the patient's urine to know if you suffer from nephropathy or not. Other tests to determine the functioning of kidneys are - S.Creatinine, eGFR, Albumin/Creatinine Ratio (ACR), 24 Hour Urine Protein, Renal Function Tests, etc. A diabetic person should therefore go in for yearly tests.

In a given situation such as this, dialysis or kidney transplant comes to your aid. Both are done when kidney functions are irreversibly damaged. Dialysis can be of two kinds; Hemodialysis or Peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis (also called as Renal Replacement Therapy) remedies kidney damage and kidney failure by using a machine to extract salts, wastes and other fluids in excess from the blood to let your blood have a healthy composition. Dialysis should only be done under the supervision of an experienced nephrologist for best results.

Hi
Diet chart for diabetic patient.
1) can diabetic patient take fruits and fresh fruit juice 2) others items please.
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. To give a diet chart I need to know following details: Weight, height, diet pattern, blood glucose levels & HbA1c% and extent of exercise being done daily. Because diet is a specific individualised thing. As regards foods to be avoided: sweets, junk foods, deep fried foods, pastries, bakery items, foods made form maida. Fruits which can be taken include papaya, guava, apple, orange, sweet lime, pomegranate, pear & water melon. Only about 100 g per day should be taken that too with strict glucose control. Mango, grapes, banana and chikkoo should be avoided. Use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Thanks.
