Voice Disorders - How Speech Therapy Can Help In It?

People’s inability to use their voices in an effective manner has the potential to create a major impact on careers, personal relationships and also on the overall quality of their lives. Some might opine that voice therapy is totally reserved for actors, singers, and broadcasters, as their careers are made through the voices but the reality is that almost everyone can garner the benefits out of voice therapy.

The speech therapists, better known as speech-language pathologists, who specialize in voice therapy, get involved in the diagnosis, assessment, planning and finally treating the patients suffering from voice disorders. These kinds of healthcare providers are trained to evaluate the usage of voice and vocal function to understand the causes behind the loss of voice and the best methods of treatment, which patients could undergo for improving their voices

Before looking into how exactly speech therapy can help in treating voice disorders, let us first understand what exactly voice disorders are, the manner in which they develop, their symptoms and causes:

Causes, Signs and Symptoms of Voice Disorders

Voice disorders deal with a variety of problems related to voice, which occur as a result of a wide range of causes.

Causes

Numerous circumstances can result in the loss of voice quality or complete voice loss. The causes which lead to voice disorders include:

  • If you frequently scream or raise the voice.

  • Allergies.

  • Side effects of medicines.

  • Viruses

  • Infections caused due to bacteria.

  • Neurological disorders.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms range from a persistent feeling as if something is stuck on the throat, to a feeling of strain on the neck and throat, leading to scratch voice.

People whose careers are dependent on voices like singers, motivational speakers and broadcasters, voice therapy might be used as a preventive measure.

Role of Speech Language Pathologist in Voice Therapy

The therapy consists of assessment and the implementation of two techniques, voice therapy and voice hygiene.

Assessment

A speech-language pathologist would look at various factors while making an assessment like:

  • Health conditions or medications, which might affect the voice.

  • Full case history

  • Patient’s self-assessment of the problem.

  • Conducting an oral-peripheral examination

After completion of the assessment, speech-language pathologists can diagnose a voice disorder, provide a clear description and assess the severity of their disorder, recommend interventions, look into appropriate treatments and if needed can refer to other professionals.

Vocal Hygiene

A speech-language therapist would encourage patients to make necessary changes in their lifestyles and maintain a healthy regime to make sure that he or she can maintain a healthy voice. This includes:

  • Period of rest to the vocal cord.

  • Complete avoidance of screaming or shouting.

  • Avoid clearing out throat.

  • Limited use of air conditioners during summer

Voice Therapy

This voice therapy involves changing up the biomechanics of voice production. Voice therapy’s goal is to bring improvements in vocal function and quality and carry out exercises aimed at achieving strength in the vocal cord.

Some of the voice therapy techniques include:

  • Physiologic Voice Therapy

  • Symptomatic Voice Therapy

Dear Lybrate User, In many of the cases stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ent specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

Stammering - 11 Homeopathic Remedies to Treat It!

Stammering or stuttering is a type of speech impairment where sounds or syllables are repeated involuntarily or there are unintended gaps in between words when the person is unable to make the desired sound.

People develop stutters due to genetic flaws, motor functioning defects, coordination problems or due to psychological stressors. The condition can result in anxietydepression and withdrawal from verbal communication.

How does homeopathy help?

A stutter can be practiced away or corrected by speech therapy but there is no specific medicine that can be used to cure stammering. Homeopathic medicines can provide relief from the symptoms by fixing flawed nervous functions, improve motor coordination and modify the vocal apparatus. Different homeopathic treatments can be used depending on the nature of the condition.

The following is a list of homeopathic remedies and lifestyle changes that can be used to address the problem:

  1. Foods rich in vitamin B6 like nuts, fish, bananas and chicken should be consumed regularly by children who have a stutter to help with motor functions.
  2. Adults should avoid caffeine, tobacco and other recreational drugs as they cause hyper-stimulation of the nervous system.
  3. Stramonium (jimsonweed) can be used when the stammering is violent and the person distorts the facial muscles heavily in order to be able to speak.
  4. Lychopodium (clubmoss) can be useful for stammering as well as depression, memory weakness and sleep problems. This is especially helpful if the patient struggles with the last few words of a sentence.
  5. Spigelia is beneficial for a mild stutter at the beginning of a sentence, often followed by undisturbed speech.
  6. Causticum is prescribed when emotional excitability causes stammering, twitching of the facial muscles or problems in the vocal chords.
  7. Staphysagria can aid in reducing social anxiety which often causes stammering i.e. the stammer only happens while interacting with strangers or authority figures.
  8. Nux vomica (strychnine) is the medicine to use when stammering is a result of extreme stress or over work.
  9. Fright or shock often causes speechlessness or stammering. Aconite can provide immediate relief in such cases.
  10. Lachesis is an effective homeopathic medicine when the patient stutters over specific letters or syllables.
  11. Gelsemium is used to treat stuttering after severe viral infections when the patient complains of a heavy tongue and lack of general coordination.

Tutlane Ka Ilaj!

Tutlane Ka Ilaj!

This is the number one fear of all people. Even the most successful speakers admit to this problem. In fact the first 90 seconds are most frightening. The heart beat races to doubles the normal: 144 times a minute. So you are advised to prepare a good opening sentence to launch you off to a good start. The fear is generally centered around rejection: am I good enough? Will people like me? Will people know more than me? Etc. A host of self-conscious comparisons that only make you feel inferior. When the whole world is in the same boat, take heart and learn some basic techniques to overcome this stage fright. Join a Toastmasters club in your town and develop your public speaking skills and experience. Also remember some little rules: look for some pleasant face in the audience, look over the audience, prepare yourself well, talk simply, understand that you can only talk on what you know not on some grand made-up design of yours, there are always others who are better than you, pray before you speak, and so on. Focus on the three areas of public speaking according to their importance: Presentation and appearance (20%), audience (30%), and content (50%). You probably have fear from childhood that has not been resolved. Please meet with a counselor to settle this matter. Talking to yourself is not good unless it is to motivate yourself. Talk to other people and clarify many of your doubts and feelings of inadequacies.

5 Reasons Why Language Therapy Is Crucial For A Non-Verbal Child!

5 Reasons Why Language Therapy Is Crucial For A Non-Verbal Child!

Some children find it too hard to communicate with others through speech. Thus it is imperative for them to learn how to communicate their thoughts and needs, make choices and interact with others. This is where a speech therapist can help. Here are some of the ways a speech therapist can help non-verbal children.

  1. Develop a better mode of communication: Speaking is not the only mode of communication. A non-verbal child can learn to communicate through gestures, sign language, vocalization etc. A speech therapist can also teach them how to control their facial expressions while communicating with others. They could also be taught to use pictures of single button voice output devices.
  2. Language Development: It is a misconception that speech therapy restricts itself to speech. Language development is a crucial part of speech therapy. Along with developing a vocabulary, a speech therapist will also be able to target concepts such as actions, sequencing, grammar, the use of pronouns, comprehension, categorization etc.
  3. Improved Social Skills: If a child cannot communicate with others, he may withdraw into himself. Thus, finding a way to express himself and communicate with others is crucial to developing social skills. Non-verbal children often find that their pragmatic language skills are delayed or disordered. A speech therapist may use various tools such as role-playing, video modelling, social stories and specific apps designed for speech therapy to help the child develop these skills. When combined with aided communications, this can help the child develop social skills.
  4. Better Reading: Literacy and communication go hand in hand. Nonverbal children may be taught to communicate through typing. This improves their spellings and in turn, helps improve their vocabulary and makes reading easier.
  5. Enhanced Alternative Communication: As mentioned above, we do not communicate only through spoken words. Gestures, sign language, vocalizations and approximations are important modes of communication for non-verbal children. A speech therapist can work on these communication strategies and help develop them. For example, a child could make hand gestures to eat or drink or tap a person to get their attention. Some children have a limited ability to create certain sounds. These sounds can be made meaningful. For example, if the child can say ‘aa’ he could be taught to make that sound when he is hungry. The key here is to understand what are the aspects important to the individual and developing a mode of communication through sounds according to them.
