My daughter is 34 Years old and schizophrenic for 14 years. Is this curable?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist,
Hello, I believe you might be knowing a lot about schizophrenia after being a care giver for your daughter. But let me start with what it is all about, schizophrenia is a disorder of brain that affects the thought process & most commonly appears in late teens or early adulthood. The symptoms might vary from hallucinations to delusions( positive symptoms ) or irritability to anxiety or intense fear. These are relatively easy to to treat. Early intervention might always give or yield good results, but in people with long standing illness there are greater chances of developing a deficit syndrome or negative symptoms. That are lack of initiative or drive to do any activity, indifference towards people or surroundings, decreased responsiveness & decreased self care. These symptoms lead to deterioration of the personality of the individual. Dealing with this syndrome is a great challenge for the treating doctor & is equally or more difficult for the individual & care givers to overcome it. Drugs alone would not help alleviate this condition & a combination of medicines & psychological measures with a persistent effort from the care giver is required. Now coming to your question is it curable? the answer is. It is treatable. Treatable here means controllable or transformable, like in an individual with diabetes, the blood sugar levels can be controlled with some measures, here the symptoms can be controlled to restore a normal life or based on the severity can be managed to improve the quality of life & performance levels of the individual. Please discuss with your treating psychiatrist about the various aspects influencing the treatment. Starting with the patients understanding of her problem, the need to adhere with the treatment protocol, the improvement which is acceptable or achievable & various factors influencing the outcome in your daughter. This would help the doctor individualise the treatment & also will help you in improving the functionality of individual. Which will in turn contribute to a better quality of life.

Anxiety, tiredness in day time, no concentration, depression, bad mood, memory loss what I have to do for this problem.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Hyderabad
Hello , all the symptoms that you have described are suggestive of a depressive disorder. When left untreated it might last form a few months to an year or more. Mood invariably influences your thought process & that might lead to development of depressive cognitions & usually the performance levels tend to become less satisfactory. Coming to your query of memory loss. It is usually a result of decreased concentration that in turn affects the process of memory formation ( happens in three steps registration, retrieval & recall ) the first step registration does not happen in a proper way & this manifests as memory deficit. Please consult a psychiatrist to evaluate the severity of the condition, based on his or her evaluation your condition you would be suggested an appropriate way of managing the condition both pharmacological( if required ) & behavioural.
