Reasons Behind The Lumbar Disk Pain

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Reasons Behind The Lumbar Disk Pain

There are many structures in the lumbar spine that can cause pain. Any kind of trouble to the nerves and veins that goes through the spine, joint issues, the disks themselves, the bones and the muscles - would all be able to act as a cause behind the pain.

Numerous lumbar spine conditions are interrelated. For instance, an unstable joint can lead to disk degeneration, which can put weight on the nerve roots and cause the disk to collapse at times. The following are the main reasons behind the lumbar disk pain:

  1. Problems in the muscles: The biggest reason behind lumbar disk pain is muscle strain or other muscle issues. Strain because of truly difficult work, twisting, or different activities that can put pressure on your spine like heavy lifting, cause the disk to rupture or slip at times.
  2. Disk degeneration: Intervertebral disks are pads that are spongy and act as shock absorbers. This can cause pain in your disk. This condition can be referred to with many names, however, is famously known as degenerative disk disease.
  3. Lumbar Disk Herniation: Herniated disks are most common reasons behind the lumbar disk pain. A herniated disk may be caused all of a sudden because of damage to the spine or truly difficult work or happen gradually as a form of general wear and tear in the spine. Leg pain (sciatica) is the most widely recognized symptom of a herniated disk.
  4. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: The sacroiliac joint, which attaches to the base of the lumbar spine and the tip of the tailbone, can cause lumbar disk pain or even sciatic pain if there is any kind of fracture in the joint that allows for movement or rather, limits any particular movement.
  5. Spondylolisthesis: Spondylolisthesis happens when one vertebra slips behind the other or underneath it. The slip most normally happens in the lower lumbar vertebrae (e.g. L4 –L5 or L5 – S1). In case that the slipped vertebra presses the nerve root at that point, it can bring about shooting leg pain and gradually foot pain as well.

There are certain ways in which this problem can be treated to a certain extent. These methods are as follows:

  1. Common medications: Muscle relaxants. This solution works as an anti-depressant of the nervous system and expands as well as relaxes the tense muscles, easing pain from muscle stiffness or fits
  2. Back supports: A few patients find that a back support can be used to bring comfort and gradually diminish the pain. There is some proof that using a brace every day, can speed up the healing process and lessen the pain. A back support may likewise be useful after back surgery.
  3. Back Braces: Epidural steroid infusion. This infusion includes a steroid inserted specifically into the external piece of the dural sac, which surrounds the spinal chord. An x-ray, called fluoroscopy, is utilized to control the needle in the right area. The objective of the infusion is to soothe the pain by decreasing irritation around a compressed nerve root.

5 Ways To Get Quick Relief From Neck Pain

5 Ways To Get Quick Relief From Neck Pain

Do you suffer from neck pain? Do you sit for long hours without backrest and are used to terrible pains in the neck at the end of the day? Neck pains are very common in people of all age. Though they have various reasons for developing, their solutions can be sometimes the same. If you are suffering from neck pain, then you can try these simple methods and ease it.

  1. Drink lots of water: This is quite interesting. Not many know that a person is born with their spinal cord made of eighty percent water. As we age, the water content reduces and the spinal discs regenerate. For those who have neck pains originating from the spinal cord, they should particularly drink lots of water to maintain a hydrated body.
  2. Use Mobile Phones Cautiously: Sometimes we are unconscious of the fact that we support our mobile phones with our neck to keep our hands free. This puts a strain on our neck causing it to ache very often. In fact, it also affects the muscles of the neck. This can be a serious cause of chronic neck pain and thus it is advised that one keeps track of how they are holding and using their phones, especially during long conversations.
  3. Visit a PhysiotherapistVisiting a physiotherapist is one of the earliest treatments that you can undertake to get quick and easy neck pain relief. The physiotherapists have lots of tricks up their sleeves to provide a quick remedy for your pains. Their treatment also helps in strengthening the neck muscles apart from reducing pain.
  4. Ice-Therapy: Usually when it comes to pains, we think of using a hot water bag to soothe the pain. But, interestingly, at times ice-therapy might also help in reducing pains. You can take some ice cubes, crush them and put them in the bag and hold it against the affected area or use an ice bag directly. This helps in calming the muscles and reducing your discomfort.
  5. Acupuncture: It is a very advanced and critical form of alternative treatment. Acupuncture must always be undertaken by professionals. Administered in the correct manner, it would help you. But if something goes wrong it can lead to dire consequences.

Thus, these are some of the quick and easy ways to reduce your neck pain discomfort. However, it is recommended that if the pain persists one should go and visit a doctor.

My anty has been fall from 8 feet long stair and get D12 fracture in her back as per the reports of X-ray and CT scan. The doctor gave DLSO belt for the back and arm pouch. The doctor also said that there is a chance of getting good recovery with the DLSO belt without surgery. Is the doctor correct?

Hello Dr. , It looks like your aunty has a compression fracture of D12 vertebra, usually happens in elderly people who have osteoporotic bones. Most of the times it does not require any surgical intervention. DLSO belt will prevent from worsening and over time the pain will come down. AS of now no surgery required.

Hello Dr. Shyam Bhairi here. The information about the knee which has been given, clearly points towards Osteoarthritis of knee joint which is very common at your age. The question is how bad the pain is, if it is bad enough to hamper your daily activites then you have to under go knee replacement surgery. If the pain is bearable then knee strengthening exercises done daily twice will gradually help reduce the pain. Newer modalities include radio-frequency ablation but it's a temporary treatment.

I met an bike accident some days before. When I visit to an orthopedics he suggest me to do x-ray. After x-ray doctor found that minor injury is there in the knee so he suggested me for MRI. Today I got the MRI report and there it mentioned:- 1-Marrow edema with fracture is noted in lower end of femur and upper end of tibia. 2-Partial tear of anterior cruciate ligament. 3-Moderate joint effusion Kindly suggest me whether it is normal or I should go for surgery.

Hello Dr. Shyam Bhairi here. It pretty unfortunate that you met with an accident, regarding your MRI report I will be in a better possible to answer if I have a look at the MRI films, but with the present info I can tell you the following facts 1) Marrow oedema is usually seen in case of moderate to severe injuries usually they will reduce with proper rest and medication 2) Fracture of of femur and tibia of undisplaced then no need for surgical intervention 3) ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) tear generally won't heal. It is very important ligament for knee joint stability, which is of utmost importance in sports person. In a normal person, if there is instability (sense of giving away of knee, not stable while getting down the stairs) then it needs to be reconstructed by arthroscopic surgery. Generally that decision is not made immediately. You can wait for 2-3 weeks if you have symptoms of instability then you have to under go arthroscopic reconstruction.

Hello, From the information what you have given it looks like you have vertebral disc prolapse. I can confirm once you get an MRI scan of lumbar spine and after seeing the MRI SCAN films and report. Till that time do back strengthening exercises and take the following medicine 1) Tab Zerodol-TH 8 mg daily twice after food for 10 days 2) Tab Pan-D daily once before breakfast for 10 days 3) Tab Nervijen-NP daily at 6 in the evening for 30 days. Please get an MRI SCAN and upload the reports and film so that I can confirm and give proper treatment.

I had ACL reconstruction 4 months back. Physiotherapy is completed. Physio asked me to do certain exercises which I am doing on daily basis. However, for last few days I am getting pain just above and below the knee cap. Physio said that muscles are very weak. Do you suggest taking creatine for muscles. Will it help in anyway or suggest any other medicine for the same.

Hello, For your height you are a bit over weight (adorns 20-25 kg more). Now to balance your own weight the muscles around the knee need strength. Strength in the muscles can be increased by exercises. Creatine will help you exercise for longer time (as in muscle fatigue will be slightly delayed) which inturn will strengthen and bulk up your muscles. It will be beneficial only if your exercise routine is very vigorous and of high intensity. Taking creatine and not exercising won't help.
