I am 36 years male. I have hypothyroid from 10 years. I am using thyrox 150 mcg daily. I am feeling energy less feeling. I am taking amway protein supplement. I read your article about what not to eat who are having thyroid problem. In that you have mentioned do not eat soy bean n its related products. Amway protein made up extracted protein from soy bean. So pls suggest me whether I can take amway protein or not. And pls suggest can I take any supplements to control thyroid. Thanks in advance.

MS - ENT,MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
No you cannot take any soya product as it has nutrient blockers which will make your hypothyroidism worse. Please stop any source of soya protein. Hi  First : medicines are mandatory.  Otherwise you might have weight gain, muscle ache, sleep and anxiety issues as well as reproductive  and cardiac issues later. You need to get an USG neck done  and an FNAC USG guided of thyroid gland. FT3/FT4/TSH  If you have already done these tests Share on lybrate I can help you better. Any history of alcohol  intake /fatty food /sugary food How much exercise do you get done every day? Ideally you should be doing a good mix of cardio ,weights and crossfit  exercises to keep you healthy Together  with a balanced diet with optimum  healthy fat protein and carbs.  Avoid  deep fried fatty food and fast food. No soft drinks /sugary drinks. I am outlining  food you should avoid or restrict in Hypothyroidism. It's important  you maintain  your body weight exercise regularly.Weight gain increases thyroid hormone requirements.  Avoid cruciferous   group of veggies  like cabbage and broccoli. Avoid soya bean in all forms. No soya ,nugget, chunk, tofu or milk. Limit their intake: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy. Cooking the vegetables can reduce the effect that cruciferous vegetables have on the thyroid gland. Limiting your intake to 5 ounces a day appears to have no adverse effect on thyroid function. Decrease gluten  intake from processed  food. Always try whole grain varieties of cereals which is rich in fibres and help improve  bowels (Take your thyroid replacement  medicine several hours before or several hours after food rich in fibres .Otherwise problem  with absorption  of hormone. 20 to 35 gram of fibres daily from all sources. Avoid excessive fatty (deep fried)and sugary food as hypothyroidism  causes your metabolism  to slow down &weight gain. Avoid highly salted food, chips, pickles, sauces as they contain  large amount of sodium .Hypothyroidism  puts you at risk of high BP and excess sodium in salt aggravates Coffee  in excess. And coffee with thyroid hormone  replacement  can prevent absorption.  Alcohol. It is toxic to thyroid gland and prevents  hormone production and absorption. The problems of hypothyroidism  gets better with medicines, diet and exercise.  You will start  better as the levels of your hormone normalises.  Initially  you need to do the TSH test every 6 weeks till normal TSH then every 3 months Diet /EXERCISE/Medicines/Sleep/meditation :5 pillars of health needed to live the healthiest Hope this helps Let me know.  Take care Dr.Amrita Basu

My mom has got gall stones of 9x4mm. Some doctors advice me to remove my gall bladder but some doctors say that you don't need to worry. She is not having any symptoms so far. Which one should I go for?

Post Doctoral Fellowship in G I Surgery, MS - General Surgery

In the face of diabetes she should not wait and take a risk of developing infection in the gallbladder. My advice is she should get her gallbladder removed. It can be cone by laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery for Gall Stones

MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Delhi
Laparoscopic surgery for Gall Stones

What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is the technique of performing surgery by making small cuts (5-10 mm usually) over the abdomen and inserting special instruments through them. Hence the name 'keyhole' surgery. The surgeon performs surgery using these special instruments, one of which is a camera while looking at the image on a screen.

The advantage of this procedure over traditional surgery is that since there is the absence of a large incision, pain is much less, recovery is faster, the hospital stay is less, complications are less.

On top of this, there is a cosmetic benefit of absence of scar!!

Nowadays, we perform almost all abdominal surgeries laparoscopically including those for appendicitis, gallstones, hernia, GERD (reflux disease), peptic ulcers, achalasia cardia, spleen removal, pancreatic surgery, liver surgery, surgery for cancers of stomach, food pipe (esophagus), small intestine and large intestine (colon and rectal cancers), hysterectomy (uterus removal) and nephrectomy (kidney removal).

In addition, we also perform specialised surgeries like those for morbid obesity laparoscopically. One of our award winning videos has been for sympathectomy for excessive sweating over palms, axilla and feet.

So, welcome to the world of Minimal Access Surgery.

Advantages of keyhole surgery:

Cosmetic
Minimal pain
Fast recovery
Shorter hospitalization
Faster return to daily routine
Earlier return to work
Less wound infection complications
Fewer chances of postoperative chest infection

Mr. Lybrate-user, if one is on treatment for hypothyroidism, then to achieve proper control of all symptoms tsh level should be maintained between 3 to 4 milli units/ l. So if tsh level is high, then you may have to increase the thyroxine dosage. And check tsh level after 6 weeks to see that dose has been helpful or not. Take care, thanks for the question.

If it is small you can wait upto 6 months, meanwhile avoid weight lifting//constipation and cough. As it can increase hernia. Final treatmebt for hernia is only operation.

I don't know your location so I can't suggest a surgeon. It will be decided by your surgeon how much rest you need. In general recommended time of rest should be followed as proper healing is a must to prevent recurrence.

If the stone is causing pain by obstruction at the bile duct, If stone has caused deep jaundice or tests show Chronic inflammation of Inside lining A general surgeon may advise you removal . There may be stones but are not causing any problem like silent stones. They can be left alone. Repeated stone formation, repeated pain and repeated surgery is unlikely. Consult General or Gasto - Int estinal Surgeon for advice

Hello I have been suffering from piles. I have reverse pain and its is very worse while motion. I taken Himalayan Pilex. Blood is also coming while motion. Pls advice medicine for immediate relief.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Piles is a tough situation. If neglected, it worsens too much. First of all constipation should not be there. Take max fibers. Take max fruit pulp. Remain light on diet. Fresh chhachh i.e. buttermilk should be maximum in day time. Stool should be soft. If you inform history and extent of piles and if there's any investigation report, pl let me know. For the time being pl get Bermuda grass (doorva) and extract juice ( whatever little you get) and try to drink daily. Take Dried alum powder 1/2 gm with water every eight hrs for checking bleeding. Proper medicines will be advised on getting info.

My son is 4 Year old. He was suffering from thyroid (Only TSH was high). We gave him Thyronorm 12. 5 mg for two month. After 3 month when we checked thyroid then it was normal. Please suggest what should we do now.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, You will have to continue giving same dose of thyronorm tablets and keep checking TSH level periodically, that is once in 2 to 3 months. Since it is a hormone deficiency disorder, regular supplement of thyroxine is necessary for lifetime. Please do not stop giving the hormone tablets as well as checking TSH periodically. If you have any doubts please come back. Thanks.

Diet and exercise are important parts of managing PCOS Avoid foods such as bread, pasta, rice, and cereal, most snack foods (such as chips, cookies, and candy), sugary drinks such as soda and juice, as insulin level in your blood goes up after you eat these foods, PCOS often have higher levels of insulin (a hormone) in their blood, and many have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. You can take: Fresh fruits or frozen/canned fruit without added sugar, or unsweetened applesauce Non–starchy fresh vegetables or frozen/canned vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, and carrots Whole grains such as whole wheat pasta, brown rice, oats, and whole wheat bread High fiber cereals such as Kashi, shredded wheat, (Look for cereals that have at least 5 grams of fiber per serving or sprinkle ½ cup of bran cereal or unprocessed bran on a low–fiber cereal to increase the fiber) Water or seltzer, flavored with fruit if desired, unsweetened iced tea High fiber baked goods made from whole wheat flour and oats Crackers and snacks with fiber such as Triscuits, Wasa, or popcorn. Also quit coffee. Start doing some workout daily, some yoga, gym, dancing, swimming etc. You will feel energetic and your cycle will also be regularized with this.
