Lybrate-user, if hypothyroidism is not in control then various symptoms keep disturbing, plus weight gain also continues. So it is essential o bring tsh level down to 3 to 4 milli units/l. Then all symptoms will disappear plus efforts to control weight also will be successful. Thanks.

What are the symptoms of hernia and how ti diagnose it ownself? Are there some home remedies to prevent it?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
It may appear as a new lump in the groin or other abdominal area. It may ache but is not tender when touched. Sometimes pain precedes the discovery of the lump. The lump increases in size when standing or when abdominal pressure is increased (such as coughing). Adults may be able to prevent a few hernias or prevent a hernia from recurring by following some of these suggestions: avoid becoming overweight. Being overweight creates greater abdominal pressure and increases your risk for developing an inguinal hernia. Stay at a healthy weight through diet and exercise.

What is the reason behind black stool? It started when I started taking supplements of medisyskart for gaining mass? Is black stool a indication that the supplements are working ?if not then, what can be the treatment for it?

MD - Homeopathy, BHMS

What is the reason behind black stool? It started when I started taking supplements of medisyskart for gaining mass? ...
No it is not an indication of the medicine working or not.. Black stool must be evaluated properly as it may be Malena ( bleeding inside the intestine.) Or because of the color in the food or drink you are taking.... so please consult for pysical examination...

I have a thyroid problem from 13 years I am using thyronorm 100 mg tablets. If I decrease the dose then my thyroid level is increasing. Now I am married I want to know that in pregnancy I will face any problem and also I want to know that I can eat everything or else some of the food items I should not prefer.

DM - Endocrinology
Endocrinologist, Ahmedabad
If you keep your TSH level in the normal range in pregnancy, there will not be any problems. But, otherwise it can cause complication to the pregnancy or the fetus. Try to avoid raw food items like (cauliflower, cabbage). You can eat them in cooked form.

My aunt suffering from thyroid? Whats it's major cause and what's its precautions? We can cure from that or not?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Cetificate Course In Thyroid Disorders Management (CCMTD)
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, by saying" suffering from thyroid" are talking about hypothyroidism? if so then the treatment is to give correct dose of thyroxine tablets daily. Dose will depend upon body weight and tsh levels. Plus patient has to avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Use whole grain flour for making chapati and roti, avoid refined flour like maida. Plus should exercise daily for at least 1 hour. This is a thyroxine deficiency disorder, hence supplement of that hormone is required daily, so there is no cure. Tablets have to be taken for lifetime.

Mr. Lybrate-user, if you are having hypothyroidism and on treatment then tsh level should be between 3 to 4 milli units, then only efforts to reduce weight will benefit.

Can Skipping Meals Actually Put You At Risk of Gallstones?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, DNB - General Surgery, Fellows of The Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS)
General Surgeon, Pune
Can Skipping Meals Actually Put You At Risk of Gallstones?

Gallstones are actually hard deposits or lumps that are formed in gallbladder. Gallbladder is a pear shaped, sac-like structure that is located in the upper right part of the abdomen that stores bile. Many people have gallstones present in their bladder but they never know it. This can be an alarming situation for people who have it.

What Causes Gallstones?

There may be several reasons, including:

  1. Your genes
  2. Your weight
  3. Problems with your gallbladder
  4. Diet
  5. Bile can be part of the problem. Your body needs bile, but if it has too much cholesterol in it, that makes gallstones more likely.
  6. It can also happen if your gallbladder can’t empty properly.

Who Is at Risk for Gallstones?
While your body produces cholesterol naturally, you can also take in excess cholesterol through your diet. Many risk factors for gallstones are related to diet. These include:

  1. being overweight or obese
  2. eating a diet that’s high in fat or cholesterol
  3. rapid weight loss within a short period of time
  4. eating diet that’s low in fiber
  5. having diabetes mellitus

What are the treatments available for this?

  1. Surgery: One of the famous treatments include surgeries. The famous surgery is Cholecystectomy (Removal of gallbladder) that further includes Laparoscopic surgery and Open cholecystectomy.
  2. Medications: The patients who cannot undergo surgeries can also use drugs like ursodiol and chenodiol . But this can take months or years to remove stones from bladder.

You can reduce your risk of gallstones if you:

  1. Don't skip meals. Try to stick to your usual mealtimes each day. Skipping meals or fasting can increase the risk of gallstones.
  2. Lose weight slowly. If you need to lose weight, go slow. Rapid weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones. Aim to lose 1 or 2 pounds (about 0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity and being overweight increase the risk of gallstones. Work to achieve a healthy weight by reducing the number of calories you eat and increasing the amount of physical activity you get. Once you achieve a healthy weight, work to maintain that weight by continuing your healthy diet and continuing to exercise. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

I am having umbilical hernia abt 8 mm I saw an grocery product in Google without surgery within 6 months hernia is totally cured, is it believable to use this.

PGD Maternal Child Health, MBBS
General Physician, Akola
Can't vouch for online product you mentioned but the size of your hernia is less than 1 cm, so with the help of abdominal belt and abdominal muscle exercises this can be kept under control. Avoid anything which increases intra abdominal pressure like weight lifting, straining in toilet if constipated, coughing without proper treatment etc. Obesity predisposes for hernia so keep weight under control.
