How Diabetes Can Affects Your Eyes?

MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS, FRCS
Ophthalmologist, Gurgaon
Play video

I am Dr Neeraj Sanduja, I am a retina specialist working at Fortis Hospital Gurgaon. And I got my home Centre Viviana and Retina centre in Gurgaon. Today I will be telling you out on a very important disease, diabetes and its effects on eyes. Diabetes can affect your eyes in 3 ways, it can affect your retina the back part of the eye or it can lead to early cataract or it can lead to glaucoma, kalamotia. Majorly I will be telling you upon how diabetes affects your eyes leading to loss of vision. Diabetes, high blood sugar level can damage our retina by making our blood vessels weak and give some blood to the retina leading to diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to vision loss in the significant proportion of patient if they don’t control their diabetes. Even if your blood pressure is high along with the high blood sugar it can affect your diabetic retinopathy in a very bad manner. Patient with diabetes may not be known whether he is having retinopathy or not. So, it is very important as soon as you have diagnosed you have diabetes you should go to a retina specialist for complete dilated fundus examination which includes retina examination and your eye protection checkup and your even vision checkup also. Retina specialist checks the retina and tells you whether your retina is affected by diabetes or not. In case you don't have any in Diabetic retinopathy, then we will call you after 1 year, in case diabetic retinopathy is there, it can be a mild type of diabetic retinopathy or it could be a severe type of diabetic retinopathy. So depending on the condition of the retina the treatment will be given as a diabetic, you may not have any symptoms initially because unless the central part of the retina maqualising valve your vision will be good or unless your blood vessels they start rupturing and bleeding inside the eye, leading to flashes and floaters inside the eye you may not know something is going wrong. So going to a regular check-up to an eye doctor is very important. Once as the retina specialist will see that diabetic retinopathy is there, we offer treatment in form of some special types of injection like anti-VEGF injection within the eye to reduce the swelling in the retina or even treatment is given in form of laser photocoagulation to stop the bleeding vessels from rupturing. Sometimes the bleeding is so extensive within the eye that, we may have to offer with track me surgery to take out the blood. First and foremost thing is that you need to control your blood sugar that is the only way you can get relief from diabetic retinopathy because if the diabetic retinopathy sets in your eyes, it's like a termite, it's like a deemak. So you have to live with that whole life and with timely treatment and prevention, you can get away from this problem.

Thank you very much.

I have myopia and it amounts to -2.25 in both eyes.
I want to reduce it as much as possible.
Please suggest some tips.
Homoeopathic medicine PHYSOSTIGMA Q ( SBL) Drink 20 drops in 20 ml fresh water 3 times daily NATRUM MUR 6X ( Dr Reckeweg) Chew 4 tab twice daily Preferably Early morning EYE BALL ROTATION EXERCISE 20 times clockwise nd 20 times Anticlockwise completes one cycle.Repeat cycles at least 5 times in start reaching upto 20 in 3 months. You can do this eye exercise any time during the day but morning time while seeing towards the red light of Sun when it is not completely risen,is the best time, dont see directly towards Sun. Diet for EYESIGHT Lutein and zeaxanthin are both important nutrients for eye health,6 as both of them are found in high concentrations in your macula—the small central part of your retina responsible for detailed central vision. More specifically, lutein is also found in your macular pigment – known for helping to protect your central vision and aid in blue light absorption—and zeaxanthin is found in your retina.Estimated daily dose of lutein is 10 mg per day, and at 2 mg/day for zeaxanthin. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are primarily found in green leafy vegetables, although zeaxanthin is far scarcer than lutein. Kale and spinach are two of the most lutein-rich foods, but you'll also find it in carrots, squash, and other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids called xanthophylls, which give plants and vegetables their yellow-orange color, and the name "lutein" comes from the Latin word "luteus," which means "yellow." If you remember this, it may help you pick out vegetables that are likely to contain higher amounts of these two nutrients. Egg yolk is another source of both lutein and zeaxanthin that is well absorbed by your body Most of the dark green leafy vegetables, previously recommended for a higher intake of lutein and zeaxanthin, have 15-47 percent of lutein, but a very low content (0-3 percent) of zeaxanthin. study shows that fruits and vegetables of various colors can be consumed to increase dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthi It is also important to note that lutein is an oil-soluble nutrient, so if you eat the vegetables without some oil or butter your body can't absorb the lutein. Adding a little bit of healthy fat, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or raw organic butter, will maximize your lutein absorption. Lutein content in food Food Mg / serving Orange ( Raw) 0.2/1 large Egg 0.2/1 large Spinach (cooked) 20.4 / 1 cup Papaya(Raw) 0.3/1 large Turnip greens (cooked) 12.2 / 1 cup Green peas (cooked) 4.1 / 1 cup Spinach (raw) 3.7 / 1 cup Corn (cooked) 1.5 / 1 cup Broccoli (raw) 1.3 / 1 cup Broccoli (cooked) 0.8 / 1/2 cup Green beans (cooked) 0.9 / 1 cup

Find the cause whether it is due to night time awakening or some cosmetic you are applying under eyes or it is just effect of light (Tyndall  effect) or it is hereditary. Take plenty of fluids, sleep at night at right time. Apply cetaphil moisturing cream around eyes in day time & Fixderma under eye cream at night on dark circles for 3 months. 20 % to 80% improvement depending on the cause. If there is no improvement ,consult dermatologist with MD or DNB Dermatogy qualification.

You may do daily oil massage over your whole body every day one hour before bath. It will help you from dryness and depression through moisturizing your body. Drinking sufficient 3-4litter water every day stop night awakening. Wake-up early before sunrises and go for a morning walk every day.
