I have a depression and stress and some physical problem like sleep to much and don't want to eat. Other people said me why you haven't a job and you are lazy. I can't work in any type. I can't study well and can't do exercise.

I have a depression and stress and some physical problem like sleep to much and don't want to eat.

When one is in a depression, he feels like he 'can't' do many things. This, of course, is not true but due to lethargy, which is different from laziness, causes a sense of inertia. Under the influence of lethargy you will not feel like doing things, getting up from the bed, working, and even the effort to put into thinking, etc. Laziness is as a good as a choice and has more to do with unwillingness. Even so, you need to fight this condition. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Dear sir, I am a 46 years old guy. I am jobless for quite some time. I find myself thinking. Too.much about my past or future and neglect. My present. I mean to say I am over thinking. How do I reduce the number of thoughts or over thinking. I would not prefer meditation as I have no interest doing it. I would prefer homeopathic medicine. Rgds, Monty.

You probably have an overactive mind that fantasies easily on any possibility. This is a non-productive way of living. You must ground yourself to reality. The following will help if you did them meticulously: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

The psychologist who told there is no medicine to cure anxiety is a quack (non-medico), trying to portray he knows everything. It s easy for you to google and find there are wonderful medicines for anxiety, but should be taken with psychiatrist advise only. Anxiety occurs due to reduced Serotonin levels/ transmission in the mind (brain), when SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are given, this is restored and the symtpoms resolve in 2-6 weeks. Kindly do not consult many quacks (non-medical, yappers) in this forum and in reality, who know nothing about medicine, but use prefix as doctors and behave like medical doctors advising innocent people like you wrongly.

I have smoking habit and now I am planning to quit smoking suddenly on one day. Quitting smoking suddenly on a day is good choice or quitting it slowly by reducing the number of cigarettes preferable? One of my friend said that one should not quit smoking suddenly on one day we need to slow down smoking day by day. Is that true?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Stop it immediately for success. Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40.

Dear , this seems to be a pattern since your younger days. You need to address that part of your personality who is insecure and need the attention in negative manner. Identify the reasons behind your insecurities and work to inculcate faith. It does take time.

Hello doctors! I'd like to ask how does one remain "stress free" There's always something perpetually worrying me. How does one force themselves to think positively when nothing's going right? I'm diagnosed with anxiety and I'm not in a position to consult someone. I'm unable to enjoy food like I once used to since I'm slightly nauseous almost all the time and feel jittery 24x7. I'm told to meditate (I've tried this a few times doesn't work much), replace negative thoughts with positive ones (only if it were this easy) and I'm frustrated with my condition so much so that I cry sometimes to let it out temporarily. Are there any actual, practical ways to control this? Thank you.

Hi lybrate-user! I can understand that you are not abrle to overcome this problem after undergoing suggestion. Actually you need to change your attitude, the way you perceive, your mindset etc. You need to be strict in following the counseling advices given to you. You actually do not know how to carry out. It would be better if you could seek a Professional Psychologist at your locality and undergo treatment for the same, since you are unable to carry. Be relaxed With regards

Dear lybrate user, I can imagine how sad, frustrated and hopeless you might be feeling presently. At the age of 25 if you have incurred loss, then that means you started you business at a very young age. And that shows that you are courageous. Unfortunately you have incurred loss, but that is part and parcel of having your own business. Do not get discouraged. Try to find out what went wrong. Make a note in your mind, not the repeat your mistake. Please understand that you are an engineer. Use your knowledge and skill to think about various options. Keep trying harder for job. At the same time, keep dreaming about having your own business again. Take calculated risks. Take some guidance from experienced people. We all go through ups and downs in life. Use your courage to bounce back. Remeber, life keeps changing constantly. These difficult days will pass. Keep trying harder till you succeed. You are only 25. There is whole life ahead of you. Take challeges head on. All the best.

5 Reasons Why People Get Addicted To Drugs

D.P.M, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
5 Reasons Why People Get Addicted To Drugs

Nowadays, drug abuse is a universally condemned action such that selling certain drugs are illegal. Children are not allowed to take drugs until they reach a certain age such as 21 for most states in India. Lots of problems start occurring when you are addicted to a certain drug. It is also nearly impossible to stop since the nerve cells change the way they function due to drugs.

These nerve cells overstimulate the 'reward circuit' of the brain. This means that your brain constantly needs to be 'rewarded' and this reward comes in the form of drugs. There are many reasons why people become addicts and here are some of them.

  1. People want to get high: This is perhaps the most common reason why people become drug addicts. The moment they take in one drug, they love the feeling they get so much that they keep wanting to go back to it.
  2. People want to fit in: This is also a very common reason. When all your friends and perhaps even your bosses and other superiors are taking drugs, you do not want to feel left out or ostracized by your friend group. This is why many people start taking drugs.
  3. Unintentionally taking drugs due to injuries or medical conditions: Sometimes a doctor prescribes a medicine for a certain time period but it does not work or works too well and so you keep taking the drug so that you will feel better. This happens more often than you think.
  4. People take drugs to relieve stressThis is another very common reason why people take drugs. You may easily rationalize with them thinking that taking drugs is a good way to relax from work and family pressures. However, the long term effects of taking drugs are much worse than the stress.
  5. Boredom from daily life: In young teens and adolescents especially, life can be so boring that they want to try something new and thus resort to drug abuse.

While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.
