General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40, In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 31st May is “World No Tobacco Day” Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40. However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality. Research-based strategies to boost your memory and keep it strong 7 Strategies for Remembering 1.Become interested in what you're learning. We're all better remembering what interests us. Few people, for example, have a difficult time remembering the names of people they find attractive. If you're not intrinsically interested in what you're learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so. 2.Find a way to leverage your visual memory. You'll be surprised by how much more this will enable you to remember. For example, imagine you're at a party and are introduced to five people in quick succession. How can you quickly memorize their names? Pick out a single defining visual characteristic of each person and connect it to a visual representation of their name, preferably through an action of some kind. Remember: Memory is predominantly visual. 3.Create a mental memory tree. If you're trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts (" leaves") should be logical. 4.Associate what you're trying to learn with what you already know. It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we'll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics. Write out the items to be memorized over and over and over. 5.When reading for retention, summarize each paragraph in the margin. This requires you to think about what you're reading, recycle it, and teach it to yourself again. Even take the concepts you're learning and reason forward with them; apply them to imagined novel situations, which creates more neural connections to reinforce the memory. 6.Do most of your studying in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a" morning person" or" evening person" at least one Study. Suggests your ability to memorize isn't influenced as much by what time of day you perceive yourself to be most alert but by the time of day you actually study—afternoon appearing to be the best. 7.Get adequate sleep to consolidate and retain memories. Not just at night after you've studied but the day, you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam.

I am engineering student I have a bad habit of smoking but I want to leave it so please give the suggestion.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Yes, you should give up this bad habit. You have made a very good decision and you will never regret it. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

Dear lybrate-user, congratulations for quitting cigarettes. The earlier you decide to quit, the easier it is. Just as you did it now, start watching out for relapsing situations, like with smoking friends, parties, exam time, result time, loneliness etc. Whatever you are thinking about recovery method are good for your age. Before you overdo it, why don't you get x ray chest, ecg and pulmonary function test and post a question online to doctor all the best and congratulations once again.

This is not a mental disease but it does seem to cripple you. I am afraid that you may be suffering from the rejection issue wherein you feel unwanted and also abandoned, and suffer separation anxiety. This can complicate your whole life. There must have been some incident in your early childhood that may have provoked this feeling: be it true or not. It is however possible to resolve this by learning to accept yourself and love yourself. The rejection issue will make you feel like you do not belong, although externally there may be all the signs that they do love you. It is your perception based on some incident in childhood that is influencing this feeling. The perception is more important than the actual event. You must do all kinds of loving things for yourself. That includes respecting your life, health and well being. Do not frequent people or places or situations where you are not wanted. You must exercise daily, eat a good diet and sleep well. Your identity is also something to work on. In the meantime, do a personality development course; attend workshops and conferences and talks to further your growth. The more educated you become, the more confidence you will develop. Generally meet more people and gradually learn to dispel all fear around them: they are also sometimes equally afraid of others!

Excessive attachment in any form is harmful for any human being. Loving someone doesn't mean you don't love yourself or stop making yourself a priority. At such a young age, love seems to be the only need in the world. But as you will mature, you will realsie that the most important thing for a person is to be financially and emotionally independent. Only a human who is independent gets the deserved respect in any relationship. Follow your dreams, follow something which excites you and attain financial independence. Next is emotional independence. If you are unable to achieve this, there is no harm in taking professional help from a counceller or psychiatrist. You have your whole life ahead of you. Don't waste it for someone who doesn't respect you as much as you do. Good luck.

Dear lybrate-user, feeling of imbalance and headache may cause you problems. I need to know the extent of those problems, like what all routine activity you are not able to do. After that diagnosing appropriately is important, both hypertension and its tablets may cause problems. It is good that you quit smoking. In cold turkey way, you may get few withdrawal symptoms. For controlling them you may need for few weeks, may be 12 weeks, nicotine replacement as gum or patch. Pain in head may be a withdrawal of nicotine. But imbalance is not a usual withdrawal symptom.

Hi lybrate-user, Getting easily agitated and angry is not only troublesome for you, but harmful for relationships. Your underlying cause can be unraveled by a competent counselor/doctor. Do not expect that with time this will disappear on its own. It can only aggravate with time. Either meet a counselor personally or at least seek consultations on phone at the earliest. Best wishes

You could be in a mild depression and must seek help for that. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. As regards the concentration you are sure to have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it; together with depression I can imagine your problems. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

Your advice to a person who want & is trying hard to quit tobacco since last 2 years .

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Just keep at it till you succeed. Your willingness and desire to want to stop is a huge plus point in your favor for overcoming this malaise. Quitting smoking is very difficult but not impossible due to the following reasons: smoking has certain conditions for the urge to be stimulated. These can vary throughout the day. You need to de-condition around the habit. There is a physical and psychological craving that has to be countered. There are some medicines that ease the craving, for which you will need to consult a doctor. Some measures you can take are: avoid people, activities, and places where the need to smoke is highest. There is also the time of day when the urge is greater; occupy yourself with planned, alternative, and interesting activities. During all these times do deep breathing exercises. Buy some chewing gum or nicotine gum or nicotine patches to tide over the urge. Replace the conditions or associations with new behaviors to affect the drive. Frequent ?no smoking zones? when in need. Tell the whole world that you have given up smoking, and ask for support from all of them. Your oral need may increase so ?pacify? it by indulging in eating, drinking health beverages, sucking on hard candy etc. Persevere in very difficult moments by sticking to your resolution because the impulse will disappear pretty fast. Get the support of an addiction counselor to process the resolution. For a price of Rs.250/- I can send you my book on addictions with free postage.

Dear, as you are already aware smoking is dangerous. Apart from the nicotine related addiction and health hazards, you inhale more than 4000 carcinogenic chemicals when you smoke. There is also a high risk of developing these problems to other people near you through passive smoking. Awareness is the basic for quitting smoking. Awareness provides will power. Know more about tobacco smoking health effects. For craving or withdrawal symptoms you can use nicotine chewing gums or nicotine patches. There are other way by gradual reducing and keeping some promises. Promise yourself, that you will not smoke in office, at home, in front of family members and dear friends etc. Never buy cigerettes in packets. Whenever you feel like smoking, go to the shop and buy one. Keep these promises strictly and you will see the quantity reduces drastically. Then you can stop it gradually. Take care.

I lost my friend last year in a accident. From then I feel very depressed. Please help me
I am sorry to hear about your friend. An untimely and sudden death is extremely traumatic for the survivors. It must have been very difficult for you to bear the shock of your friend's sudden death in the accident. Give yourself more time to come out of this trauma. At the same time please understand that no one has control over" death" mostly it is seen that a person who is destined to die, dies somehow and another person may live a long life in spite of many odds. So it appears to be more of destiny or a chance whatever you may call it. You friend probably had to die. You may try to explore the meaning of death and/or what happens after death, as per your belief, you may find some solace there. Right now, try to meet other friends, and try to follow your usual routine. Your life will never be the same again but you have life ahead. Try to remember the good times you shared with your friend. Share your sorrow with his family and other close friends. Together, you all will find support in each other. Take care.
