Hii Doctor, I have a problem I was very shy from childhood and never talk to any person by eye contact specially stranger but now the problem is that I can not talk any female by eye contact my eyes goes to wrong way like her breast so this way I can not go for a interview but I am not that kind of person who think about sex, I can not face any female by eye contact, my eye divert to her body part so that make me feeling strange, that insert some negativity in my body and I can not keep any female relationship, how can I uproot this problem, so that I can talk any female eye to eye with positivity, should I concentrate in mirror and see my own eye.

you are preparing you mind is like that. if we have also dreams. but we dont care. dont recollect dreams. dont give suggestion to mind that i get dreams. if you give suggestions like that mind is also working like that. when you feel relaxed you are not thinking about any dream. no dream comes to you. if you feel i am not sleep well. then mind also gives suggestion to you. mind is a super computer it depends on what we give suggestion to it. it works like that. suppose if we give positive suggestions it will work on positive aspects. if we think negative aspects it works on negative manner. so think and feel always in a positive manner. read good inspirational books. feel always comfortable. develop good strong work on studies. meditation and yoga helps to you very much. better to share your internal thoughts and feelings with your closed friends and family members. be happy all the time. be sociable all the time. ok all the best.

Dear please understand masturbation is natural, normal and is never unhealthy. You cannot have memory loss, weakness in studies, feeling sleepy, pain at abdomen etc due to masturbation. I think you are having anxiety disorder due to the lack of knowledge about masturbation and obsession about the symptoms. General anxiety disorder treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured. The process could take some time according to the depth of the problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Take care.

Marriage is something that needs to be nurtured. Often due to lack of time, energy and motivation people do the mistake of assuming that the marriage will take care of itself. It will only result in less than optimal fulfillment in one of the important areas of life.

Its too early to expect so much from a child so keep calm he will overcome this problem. Almost all children have different mental abilities and memory powers. As they grow old they will develop and adapt themselves. So have patience.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Take care.

I would like to know how long the effect will be there for inderal tablets. I am having it 1 hour before any anxious situation.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patan
Dear lybrate-user, thanks for writing to us. I understand your concern. Inderal tablet contains propranolol drug which is beta blocker group. You should take this medicine under medical supervision only. You take it for anxiety provoking situations. I recommend you to consult psychiatrist for this. There are anti anxiety medications and behavior therapies for anxiety disorders. Propranolol alone cannot cure your illness. Onset: within 1 to 2 hours after oral use. Duration: 6-12 hr (immediate release); 24-27 hr (extended release) peak blood levels: 1-4 hr (immediate release); 6-14 hr (extended release) I hope this will help you. Warm regards.

At your age this is not surprising. One is that your hormones are playing havoc, and two there may be some childhood issues that were not resolved and are coming up now seeking a resolution! For the latter, you need to check with your parents about that, and for the former you will need to tide this period over because it lasts for exactly two years. If you are blessed with a good value system, you will be able to come out of this unscathed. Even so, you can reach out to a counselor and sort out both possibilities and come good. I would also like you to be honest with yourself and see if you are getting angry because you are actually scared. Anger can easily cover fear and nobody will be any the wiser. But the sad part is that the fear does not get dealt with and people and you will be focused on the wrong feeling. Look at that too in your therapy. If you exercise vigorously, a lot of your anger will be dissipated. The fear of losing people may have its roots somewhere in childhood and my be quite unfounded for today. Sort this out with a counselor too and this stress may be affecting your concentration and memory. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine.

Dear lybrate user. Welcome to lybrate. I can understand. Loosing someone near and dear is called grief and depression related to grief is pretty normal. But this sort of depression does not stay for long. This depression gets cleared within a span of some weeks. The best option for you is to undergo counseling and depression related therapy. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry. Most of the psychological problems can be cured with scientific therapy methods. Take care.

I am suffering from anxiety. I think so. Kind of social anxiety. Whenever am going to a new place for interview or to meet a peraon on a blind date. I started feeling dizzyness light headed and also pukes sometime. After puking I feel normal. What is it?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
To a certain extent all of us feel like that but we do not react so severely. Perhaps you have an inferiority complex or are afraid of new situations and people. Blind dates can be exciting or frightful, anyway. If the fear is too much for you, then you may react with dizziness and vomiting? like it is unbearable. Together with stress your imagination will tend to go wild with possibilities. Talk to a counselor and deal with this extreme fear, you will no longer have these reactions. It is very useful to also have a fit body by regular exercise; and to be emotionally fit so that you can develop resilience to combat most situations with much composure. Your understanding of people in authority may stem from a strict parent at home to cause much anxiety. Relating to the opposite sex will get better over time with every outing. Many girls are as anxious as you would be and it helps to feel at ease yourself before making them comfortable. You will be a hit with females, if you display composure. Well, men are supposed to be the stabilizing and steadying force especially in crisis: so practice, learn the routines and become adept at it. Not too far into the future you will be walking with the girl of your dreams making her feel secure and safe because of you!

The first thing to be done is a proper diagnosis by a proper professional. You can not label yourself having depression or anxiety. Go to your general practitioner to get a proper guidance.

I am not able to focus anywhere. I have spent plenty of sleepless nights crying for hours. I feel sick sometimes. I feel like ending my life sometimes. I want to overcome. Dear, you should be able to understand the difference between depression and disappointment. You are disappointed because of your joblessness and therefore you are worried, sleepless, sad etc. These things happen. Nothing to worry. Ask yourself, why should I worry and cry over and over again instead of finding an alternative? once you introspect, your problem will start solving itself. Take care.

I am 25 year age. I am. Preparing for competitive exam. I have to study for 15 to 16 hours daily. What should be my diet and best time? What is minimum sleeping hours?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Avoid tea and coffee. Yes caffeine will wake you up and give you a buzz right away .But once the effect wears off; you will feel even more tired and sleepy than you were before. This happens because these drinks dehydrate you. •Have a balanced diet: Eat a heavy and healthy breakfast but have a light dinner. If you feel hungry at night, eat fruits, dry fruits, and salads only. Avoid junk food. •Take a 20-30 minute nap during the day. This shall help you to concentrate better. •As you study, whenever you feel tired or sleepy or even stressed, take a minute to practice yoga- breathing exercises. Concentrating on your breath can help bring more oxygen to the brain which will in turn wake the body up and help clear your mind to study better. All the best! :)
