Learn About Menstrual Disorders In Young Women

Learn About Menstrual Disorders In Young Women

Menstruation is a barometer of a women's health. Any changes in the menstrual pattern of a woman could be a harbinger of serious underlying disease and should not be overlooked. However adolescent girls are a special case where menstrual pattern is variable and much different from Adult women. It is very common for teenaged girls who have recently started menstruating to have irregular periods. This period pattern is wrongly classified as 'period problems". At the same time one needs to understand that some of the real problems like period pain in young girls are often overlooked as "normal" when they could be associated with serious medical disorders.

Although menstrual disorders are fairly common in most young women, it may have an underlying cause which can be indicative of a serious issue. Therefore, it is recommended for young women to consult a gynecologist if any difficulties arise.

Symptoms Of Menstrual Disorders (Severe)

  1. Excessive abdominal pain
  2. Excessive vaginal pain
  3. Missed / irregular periods
  4. Painful periods

The severe symptoms are usually accompanied by mild symptoms such as:

  1. Irritability
  2. Weight loss
  3. Vomiting
  4. Headaches/back pain
  5. Fatigue
  6. Insomnia
  7. Diarrhea

PCOS and Menstrual Disorders

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a common reason for women to experience irregular menstrual periods. PCOS occurs when there is an excess of male hormones (androgens) in the body which hinder the production and release of eggs in the ovaries, resulting in menstruation problems. Symptoms of PCOS are acne, hair loss and weight gain. Women with PCOS are 80% more likely to suffer from fertility issues later in life. Along with that, PCOS can result in high cholesterol and high blood pressure. One serious concern for women with PCOS is resistance to insulin which leads to diabetes.

Diet and menstrual disorders

Poor diet can also lead to menstrual complications. An extremely high fiber diet can result in less frequent ovulations and therefore irregular periods. A diet which is too low in fats and fatty acid can also result in abnormal menstrual patterns.

Stress and PCOS

Young women are often prone to immense stress. Stress is one of the primary reasons for delayed periods. Stress can cause minor complications in the hypothalamus which may have consequences in the levels of hormones in the body.

The presence of ovarian cysts in the vagina may be a cause for irregular or painful periods. Endometriosis can cause heavy bleeding and extreme pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

I am on Endosis 2 mg for 2 months to treat endometriosis. Can I fall pregnant during these 2 months while on Endosis? Do I need to take special precautions to prevent pregnancy?

I am on Endosis 2 mg for 2 months to treat endometriosis. Can I fall pregnant during these 2 months while on Endosis?...
Hello lybrate-user, Endosis prevents ovulation - that is, it prevents formation and release of an ovum (eggs) from the ovaries. So, you cannot fall pregnant while you are on Endosis. You will need to take precautions for the first month you are on the Endosis but not on the later months. I hope that helps.

lybrate-user, Embryo transfer is usually painless but if you have pain, you can ask for the procedure to be done under light anesthesia - it will not affect the embryo. I hope that helps.

I am 24 year, female. I experience frequent irritations in my vagina. Mostly it turns out to be fungal infection. I clean my self regularly with wash twice daily even. Why m I prone to this particular infection?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Guwahati
Repeated vaginal fungal infections occur due to an altered acidity (ph) in the vagina. Please take curds - at least 200 mg daily - to improve vaginal health. Curds can also be applied directly into the vagina to cause growth of healthy lactobacilli and improve the vaginal health. Please do not use any washes to clean the vagina. Use plain water and do not allow water or any wash to enter the vagina.

Was on novelon 21 day pill pack from june. Missed only second last pill of june which was doubled up along with the last. Took a break of 6 days from 2-7th july. Withdrawal bleed from 5-8th july. Started new pack from 8july. Had protected intercourse on 9th july. But the condom was used thrice. Then had protected intercourse on 14th. Missed 21st july pill which was doubled next day after a gap of 24 hrs. On 22nd july morning had a very light bleeding. Which was stopped as soon as pills were continued. Pill pack ended on 28th july. Had withdrawal bleed from 1-6th aug. Took home pregnancy test with first morning urine after that. At 4,5,6,7,8tg weeks, all were negative. No symptoms in general. Bt from the past two days I feel a little bloated and ve put on some weight. And for the past two days vaginal discharge was watery transparent and stretchy but of little amount. Is this the signs of ovulation? If so when will be my next period, as my expected date is on 1st sept. Do I need to do blood test or hpt further? Is their any risk of pregnancy?

Hello lybrate-user, If you have had no sexual intercourse after the withdrawal bleed on 1-6th August, your chances of getting pregnant are nil. A withdrawal bleed or a period causes the endometrium (inner uterine lining) to get shed. Any embryo implanted at that time will also get shed. Once the bleed stops, a new menstrual cycle starts with a freshly grown endometrium. The clear stretchable mucus is most likely to be due to ovulation. In which case, you will get your periods after about 14-16 days. Ovulation can get delayed due to stress and if you have been worrying about a pregnancy in the last few days, this mental stress could have delayed ovulation in this month. A delayed ovulation will cause a delayed period. The other symptoms are also likely to be due to stress. I hope this helps.

I have minor bleeding from my uterus what is the reason just tell me and also I had taken ipill before 12 days I am pregnant or not.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Guwahati
Hello, the bleeding is due to hormonal withdrawal. The ipill contains a high dose of progesterone, a hormone which causes the inner uterine lining (the endometrium) to grow. After a few days of taking the ipill, the hormonal level decreases and there may be bleeding from the endometrium. If you have taken the ipill within 24 hours of sexual intercourse, the chances of pregnancy are low. Please get a pregnancy test after 16 days of intercourse to check for pregnancy.

Hello, the first ultrasound done during a normal pregnancy is usually between 16 - 20 weeks. This is done to check for the baby's growth and development. An ultrasound earlier tha this will be needed only if there is a complication in the pregnancy.

Hello, a whitish fluid and discharge is normal as long as there is no pain or itching. Pain or itching will indicate an infection and you will need to be treated.

The best time to get a pregnancy test is after 7 days of the missed period. You should take it at around the 21st of this month.
