Is Depression A Treatable Illness?

Depression is recognized as a mood disorder characterized by the prolonged feeling of sadness and loss of interest in otherwise regular activities. The symptoms include loss of sleep and appetite, loss of interest, persistent feeling of sadness and lowered self-esteem. These symptoms should last for a minimum of 4 weeks for the individual to be diagnosed with depression. Sometimes, at its later stages, depression can also be accompanied by suicidal tendencies.

How it can be treated?

  1. Role of anti-depressants: Depression has become rather common in the present day scenario. The treatment varies from prescription drugs to therapy. People who have depression are usually given mood enhancers and anti-depressants. Antidepressants are medicines used to help people who have depression. With the help of these depression medications, most people can achieve significant recovery from depression. Most antidepressants are believed to work by slowing the removal of certain chemicals from the brain. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters (such as serotonin and norepinephrine). Neurotransmitters are needed for normal brain function and are involved in the control of mood and in other responses and functions, such as eating, sleep, pain, and thinking. Antidepressants help people with depression by making these natural chemicals more available to the brain. By restoring the brain’s chemical balance, antidepressants help relieve the symptoms of depression. Specifically, antidepressant drugs help reduce the extreme sadness, hopelessness, and lack of interest in life that are typical in people with depression. However, these are but short-term solutions to depression and don’t necessarily cure the individual completely. For the treatment to be effective, the drug intake must be combined with therapeutic techniques to solve the problem at the root level.
  2. Therapy: Different therapeutic techniques are used to treat depression depending majorly on the individual, the cause of depression and general history and state of mind. Research suggests that client centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are a good start with an average case of depression. The therapists usually incorporate several other methods based on the client’s need to get maximum effect. Adlerian techniques, where individuals are made to comprehend the thoughts and emotions which influence their lifestyles and adopt a more productive and positive way of life, are rather helpful with most clients who suffer from depression.

Depression is a fairly common mental health disorder today, affecting a large population. Depression must be acknowledged as a proper mood disorder and not just a passing phase. How Does De-Addiction Happen?

Addiction is the absolute dependency on a particular substance or situation. Substance addiction includes a variety of substances apart from alcohol and drugs. Examples include porn, food, chocolate, nicotine, etc. Situation addiction includes gambling, shopping and sex among others. The problem in our society with addiction is it is treated like a choice than as a major problem faced by an individual. De-addiction is the process of ridding the individual of his dependence on certain substances or activities.

Process

  1. Rehabilitation psychology studies the process of de-addiction and helps addicts blend with the normal lifestyle. Rehab centers offer several forms of therapy to reduce substance usage.
  2. Group therapy is always the go to form of therapeutic technique to deal with cases of addiction owing to the common feeling among users that people who aren’t addicted and do not know what they’re going through. In those cases, it is rather important to have support from a group of people who are exactly where they are.
  3. Family therapy is also essential to make the individual know how their loved ones feel and also remind them of the unconditional support. Some rehab centers also use the horse therapy (focuses on interaction with horses which facilitates emotional and occupational development in patients) which is rather interesting to witness.
  4. In addition to therapy, rehab centers teach life skills and cooperation. Apart from all this, drugs are also prescribed to deal with addiction along with the weekly scheduled personal therapy sessions.

Although an unfamiliar concept in India, halfway homes are the next step after the rehab. The individuals learn different skills and ways to manage themselves outside the house while still continuing their therapy. This is done to make sure one doesn’t relapse right after the rehabilitation has been completed. Most rehabs also suggest support group meetings. Even otherwise support groups are extremely effective in the de-addiction process. ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ and ‘Narcotics Anonymous’ are two of the most widely managed support groups around the world.

Addiction is an immense issue which has spiraled out of control in today’s times. However, it is necessary to understand it isn’t the question of the individual’s morality. The removal of labels and stigma is essential in the entire process. Support from loved ones is an extremely important step towards de-addiction, right after the acceptance that one is addicted.

Stress and anxiety are natural emotions which are attached to it. But, overcoming it with courage and optimism is all that matters. Ideally, stress occurs due to many factors, such as if you are not able to cope up with the studies, family or school pressure. In fact, it is completely normal to feel that you are the only person who is experiencing this muddle. So, try to imagine more with positive thoughts like you becoming a school topper. Visualize your life with a bigger picture, with you leading a good and happy life. Remember, exams are important but this is not the only way to become successful in future.   • Set time and read: This will help you in time management during the examination.
  • Do combine studies with friends: This gives more space for learning new things.

Phase 2 - Facing the Exams

  • Avoid last minute preparations. It will disturb your confidence levels.
  • Keep all the required things ready the day before the exams.
  • Don’t ever compromise on health and sleep. Good sleep and nutritional food are important to boost up your physical strength.
  • Refrain comparing yourself to others. Every individual is unique.
  • Don’t think about the failures. Learn to embrace them and you will shine big in the future.

Depression is an illness which has a direct impact on the brain. People feel that it’s just feeling down but it is more than that. It is a serious illness caused by changes in brain chemistry. There are other factors also that contribute to the onset of depression, including

  1. Genetics,

  2. Changes in hormone levels,

  3. Stress,

  4. Difficult life circumstances.

Any of the above mentioned factors or combination can precipitate changes in brain chemistry and may lead to depression. Depression is a serious and a very common condition these days which may lead to suicide in extreme cases.

Signs of Depression:

  1. Loss of pleasure in virtually all activities,

  2. Feeling of fatigue or lack of energy,

  3. Difficulty with concentration or memory,

  4. An increase or decrease in appetite, with a corresponding change in weight.

  5. Thoughts of suicide Depression & Suicide.

A major cause of suicide is mental illness, very commonly depression. People feeling suicidal are overwhelmed by painful emotions and see death as the only way out, losing sight of the fact that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary state. Most people who succeed with living feel glad that they resist and are alive today. Suicidal thoughts may be fleeting or more frequent, passive or active. People who are in depress state often start preparing for death, such as giving away possessions or acquiring a gun and these are cause of great concern and should be taken very seriously.

How to judge if suicide is a possibility?

There may be some warning signs, though hard to predict but can be an area of concern:

  1. Being depressed or signs of some mental disorders.

  2. Talking about the loss of interest in living or not to be around.

  3. Increased social isolation.

  4. Mood swings very often.

  5. Buying suicide materials.

  6. Preoccupation with death.

While anyone can become suicidal, there are certain risk factors that make suicide more likely:

  1. Previous suicide attempts.

  2. Recent losses like loss of a relationship or job.

  3. Cultural and religious beliefs supporting suicide.

  4. Access to means of suicide.

How to help a depressed person?

  • Let the person know if you've noticed a change in their behaviour.

  • Spend time talking with the person about their experiences and let them know that you're there to listen without being judgmental.

  • Suggest the person see a doctor or health professional and/or help them to make an appointment.

  • Offer to go with the person to the doctor or health professional.

  • Help the person to find information about depression and anxiety from a website or library.

  • Encourage the person to try to get enough sleep, exercise and eat healthy food.

  • Discourage the person from using alcohol or other drugs to feel better.

  • Encourage friends and family members to invite the person out and keep in touch, but don't pressure the person to participate in activities.

  • Encourage the person to face their fears with support from their doctor/psychologist.

Remember that your loved one's depression isn't anyone's fault. You can't fix the person's depression — but your support and understanding can help.

Drug addiction is one of the social menaces and in most people, what starts off as a result of peer pressure and trying to be cool ends up affecting lives significantly. It is not just social, but also affects financial, physical, emotional, and social well-being. The small periods of happiness given by the drug is followed by months and years of torment.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has identified that drug addiction causes chemical and structural changes in the brain, leading to dangerous and self-destructive behaviours. The brain’s response to stimulus like pleasure, joy, happiness, and pain are altered with constant drug abuse. For instance, the neurotransmitter called dopamine, which makes one feel good, is usually produced by the brain in small amounts. However, drugs increase this level to 2 to 10 times more, making the person feel extremely high and happy. Since the body is unable to reach the highest level of happiness on its own, the dependency on these drugs to feel good increases.

Repeated use of the drugs leads to increased dependency, wherein the brain refuses to feel good without reaching those high levels of dopamine. The issue is mostly seen in teenagers and young adults but can be seen in any age group.

October 2 is recognised as National Anti-Drug Addiction Day and nationwide campaigns and drives are done to help people overcome addiction. One of the main reasons a drive this size is required is because of the social stigma attached to the problem. Most families shun away from recognising it as a problem that can be easily treated, and so the affected person is sucked deeper into the problem.

Overcoming addiction: One of the main success factors for treating addiction is for the affected person to recognise that he or she is addicted and needs to get rid of the problem.

  1. There are national toll-free helplines that are set up, which can guide through the whole program. This way, if required, anonymity is maintained and support for overcoming addiction is increased.
  2. It involves a group effort involving the affected person, family and friends, medical and clinical personnel, and counsellors in some cases.
  3. Cognitive behavioural therapy: The person is made conscious of the change in behaviour and the way drugs affect it. Healthier patterns to be happy and joyful are discussed.
  4. In most cases, the underlying reason for reaching out to drugs needs to be addressed also to prevent relapse.
  5. Group therapies where the person makes friends who have faced similar issues and overcome the problem. This increases their accountability and commitment to getting rid of the problem.

Drug abuse is a national social menace and needs more free admittance and management.
