There is a small swelling just on one side of my anus. It doesn't cover the hole in any fraction. It doesn't hurt. When I touch, I feel a "ball like thing" What is that? Is it scary? What kind of treatment will be given to me? Is there anything I should do?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear Lybrateuser, - If the swelling is near the anal opening it is a hemorrhoid, that is swelling of the vein in that area - to reduce it follow some precautions: - avoid constipation & straining & sitting too long at stools - to avoid constipation & for a smooth bowel movement have more of fibre containing foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains such as whole wheat, brown rice, oats, corn, quinoa instead of refined ones, beans, lentils, pulses, peas, sprouts, nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pista, cashews, peanuts - avoid fried, spicy & junk food, also alcohol & tobacco if you take - have plenty of oral fluids including 8-10 glasses of water for proper digestion & hydration - apply Smuth gel before & after motions till swelling subsides - take tablet Sitcom, one tablet daily on the morning after breakfast.

Respected Madam I assume the stone is in the lower end of the ureter. Small size stones upto 6 mm pass out spontaneously if given adequate time (Around 2 weeks). If the stone is still stuck in the ureter even after 15 days, it is advisable to go for Ureteroscopy and stone removal. Hope this helps Thanks.

If you don't have any pain, it's worth trying with medical management. Have lots of fluids. And if you continue to have pain, then go ahead with surgery.

I do not drink much water (approximately 2 glasses per day). But I do urinate about 7 times a day. In case if I drink more, I get the need of urinating more. It makes me uncomfortable. Regarding my toilet habits, I do not go to toilet daily. The gap varies like 4-6 days. Sometimes it's hard & my anal area gets really painful when passing them out.

Hello Water demand certainly varies from individual to individual and although a standar 6-8 glasses may be recommended but it depends on many factors. Eg the activity you are doing, sweating, weather etc. It’s better to judge your output by seeing the colour of urine at the end of the day (evening) and see if it is dark yellow or pale yellow. Ideally should be more on the pale side. Concentrated urine due to less water intake is dark in color and has a strong smell. Needless to say, water intake should be good for good digestion, healthy skin, hair and over all well being. Do not ignore your needs. The reason ofconstipation is always further aggravated by less water intake and explains why you are having straining at stools and pain. May I suggest you to increase water and other fluids like juices intake. But donot confuse coffee and tea as substitutes of water, they are infact slightly dehydrating. Good luck and have lots of water.

Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome - Is Your Child Suffering From It?

FIMSA, MD-Nephrology, DM - Nephrology, MD-Medcine, MBBS

Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome - Is Your Child Suffering From It?

As the name suggests, congenital nephrotic syndrome affects the kidneys of newborn babies. Though congenital means the disease must be present from birth, babies who develop nephrotic syndrome in the first three months are also said to suffer from this condition. This is a rare genetic disorder that is passed down from parents to their children. Boys are at a higher risk of suffering from this disorder than girls. The congenital nephrotic syndrome causes the kidneys to leak large amounts of protein into the baby’s urine. This can lead to swelling of the body tissues and a weakened immune system.

Some of the common symptoms of this disease include

  1. Low birth weight
  2. Lack of appetite
  3. Swelling of the body
  4. Foamy or frothy urine
  5. Lowered urine production
  6. Cough

Pregnant women are usually screened for this condition before the baby is born. The doctor will be looking for a placenta that is larger than normal in an ultrasound and high levels of alpha fetoprotein in amniotic fluid samples. If found; the doctor might ask for a genetic test to confirm the diagnosis.

Once the baby is born, he or she will show signs of fluid retention as the body begins to swell. Other signs your doctor will look out for are high blood pressure, signs of malnutrition and abnormal sounds from the heart and lungs. A urine analysis will also show high levels of protein in the urine though the overall protein levels in the body may be low. The doctor may also ask for a kidney biopsy in some cases to confirm the diagnosis.

Aggressive forms of treatment in the early stages of this disease can help control it. This may include antibiotics, blood pressure medication, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers to reduce protein leakage and diuretics to manage excess fluid build-up. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also help reduce the amount of protein leaking into the urine. In addition, the doctor may advise you to limit fluid the baby’s fluid intake to control the swelling. As a last resort, the kidneys may need to be removed to prevent protein loss. This will be followed by dialysis or a kidney transplant.

If left unchecked, this disorder can lead to a number of complications including acute kidney failure, blood clots, infections and diseases related to malnutrition. It can also lead to the death of a baby in the first year of catching the infection or before his or her fifth birthday.

Chronic Kidney Disease - Know The Common Types!

Chronic Kidney Disease - Know The Common Types!

What are the functions of the kidney?

The kidneys filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. As kidneys fail, the waste accumulates in the body. The two most important enzymes, which kidney makes are erythropoietin & renin. Erythropoietin are made by the kidneys if there is less oxygen in the blood. It tells the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. So this means there will be more oxygen carried in the blood.

Renin is made by the kidney if there is low blood pressure, low volume of blood, or too low salts in the blood Renin make the blood vessels smaller and tells the adrenal gland to make aldosterone. It also makes a person feel thirsty and all of this makes the blood pressure go up. Since Kidney plays a very important role in the overall functioning of the body, it’s very important to take care of its health.

Let’s have a look on various kind of kidney disease including the one which are chronic:

  1. Kidney stones
  2. Kidney Infections
  3. Glomerulonephritis
  4. Congenital Kidney disease
  5. Diabetic Nephropathy
  6. Hypertensive Nephropathy
  7. Drugs

Now what is Chronic Kidney Disease?

Chronic kidney disease include conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep healthy by doing the jobs listed, if it gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in the blood and make person sick.
Chronic kidney disease is caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders.

What causes chronic kidney disease?
The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes & high blood pressure which are responsible for up to two third of the cases. Other conditions that affect the kidney are:
1. A group of diseases that cause inflammation and damage to the kidney’s filtering unit.
2. Inherited disease such as poly cystic kidney disease.
3. Malformation that occur as a baby develop in mother’s womb.
4. Lupus and other disease that affect the body’s immune system.
5. Repeated urinary infections.

What are the symptoms of chronic kidney disease?
1. Feel more tired and have less energy
2. Have trouble concentrating
3. Poor appetite
4. Trouble sleeping
5. Muscle cramping at night
6. Swollen feet and ankles
7. Puffiness around the eyes especially in the morning
8. Dry itchy skin
9. Need to urinate more often, especially at night.

In case of the similar symptoms one needs to get it diagnosed and connect with the physician for good care and treatment. Stay Healthy!

Is Homeopathy The Best Line Of Treatment For Kidney Stone?

Is Homeopathy The Best Line Of Treatment For Kidney Stone?

Kidney Stones, also known as Renal Calculi is a condition usually brought about by inadequate hydration and consumption of food high in calcium, but in most cases it a hereditary condition. The most commonly opted for treatment is surgery to remove the stones.

If you do, surgical procedures are neither the answer, nor a plausible option for you. Besides being risky, surgery clearly isn't effective in bringing about an end to the condition on a permanent basis. Homeopathic remedies, on the other hand, are not only safe, they offer as little of side effects as possible.

Homeopathic treatments of kidney stones are also proved to have been effective in most cases.

What are the most common homeopathic alternatives to suppress kidney stone formation? Berberis Vulgaris is the most reputed homeopathic drug when it comes to diluting the stone in the kidney and also in reducing the chronic pain that is often associated with stones. It is also said to improve chances of mitigating periodic bouts of kidney stone formations. Berberis Vulgaris is effective for various kinds of kidney and renal stones. In addition to this drug.

Sarsaparilla, Hydrangea, and Benzoic Acid also prove effective in the long run. Sustained practice of such Homeopathic remedies along with increased intake of fluids and adequate exercise go a long way to ensure cessation of kidney stone formation.

Urinary Tract Infection - Do You Think It Can Be Prevented?

DNB (Nephrology), M.D ( Internal Medicine), MBBS
Nephrologist, Noida
Urinary Tract Infection - Do You Think It Can Be Prevented?

The structure responsible for production, transportation, storage and excretion of urine form the urinary tract. Kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra are structures involved in urine formation and excretion process. Kidney filters nearly 3 ounces of blood, removes waste materials every minute. When these get infected with entry of any micro organism or any other pathological condition, then the person gets urinary tract infection (UTI).

Causes and symptoms
Urinary tract infections are more common in women than men because of the small size of the urethra (4cms) and also because of the squatting position of voiding. Entry of organisms like bacteria, viruses and fungi are the major cause of UTI. The person may experience burning sensation and pain when voiding, fever is indicated when the infection has reached the kidneys or prostate glands in male. Other symptoms include pain in back, ribs, nausea and vomiting.

Preventive measures
Though antibiotics are used to treat the present infection there are increased chance of getting the recurrent infection. So it is best advised to follow the preventive measures to stay away safely from getting infected

  1. Drink plenty of water nearly 2- 3litres of water per day.
  2. Urinate when you feel the need , don’t control or resist voiding when you feel the urge as this may give room for the organisms to grow well
  3. Urinate after sexual intercourse. change the birth control measures if UTI is a recurrent problem
  4. Wash front to back, wipe off thoroughly after emptying the bladder so as to prevent the entry of organisms into the urethra.
  5. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes. Always prefer cotton inner garments and loose fitting clothes so that air entry keeps the area moist and free from bacteria.
  6. Cranberry juice works best and it is the natural treatment for bladder infections. Cranberries have a special substance that can avoid the entry of E.coli into the bladder, but it does not have much effect on recurrent UTI infections
