TETRACYCLINE STAINS

Tetracycline is an antibiotic that kills many types of bacteria in the body and is used to treat urinary tract infections, genital infections, acne, skin infections, and infections that cause stomach ulcers. It causes many side effects including gray colored or gray-striped teeth.The gray stains caused by Tetracycline penetrate deep into the tooth enamel and into the dentine below the enamel. When used on developing teeth, Tetracycline may result in blue, gray, brown or yellow stains.

HOW IS TETRACYCLINE STAINS DIAGNOSED?

Teeth staining starts out as a yellow color and over time, as the tooth is exposed to light, a chemical reaction occurs and the yellow turns to a dark brown color.

HOW IS TETRACYCLINE STAINS TREATED?

Tetracycline stains are very difficult to remove and, depending on the deepness of the stain, may not respond to some treatments. There are a few cosmetic dentistry treatments to correct these stains which include Porcelain Veneers, Tooth Whitening and Dental Bonding.

Tetracycline stains can occur due to the deposition of Tetracycline on the tooth's structure. Tetracycline is an antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections. Its prescription includes but is not limited to the treatment of acne, rosacea, cholera and Chlamydia. Deposition of the drug results in blue, gray, brown or yellow stains on the teeth. The age at which the drug is taken strongly influences the location and extent of the tetracycline stain. If a woman takes tetracycline during her pregnancy, the newborn may develop the stain on its primary teeth. Tetracycline teeth stains can be embarrassing for the affected individual. In the past, tetracycline stains were covered with caps or crowns on all the teeth. The treatment was expensive and not easily available. Recent developments in cosmetic dentistry have provided several treatments for Tetracycline staining. Deep bleaching session is one such option that can cost anywhere from $700 to $800 and should be performed by a trained dentist. The procedure is safe and painless. Apart from the clinical sessions, the bleaching process has to be followed at home for four to twelve weeks under expert supervision. Porcelain veneers coat the affected teeth with a thin ceramic layer. For aesthetic purposes, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth surface before gluing the veneer over the face of the tooth with specialized resins. The procedure provides a permanent and safe solution to this dental disorder. The strength of the teeth is not compromised in any way. Tetracycline stain treatment can offer the much-needed relief to individuals who suffer a low esteem due to this dental problem.
