It is generally a genetic factor. But some times may be due to deficiency of nutrition. You may give dewormer and nutritional diet.

Monsoon Concerns - Leptospirosis.!!!!

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Monsoon Concerns - Leptospirosis.!!!!
Monsoon may be a great time to go outdoors with your pets and enjoy the rains. But be aware of the hidden dangers.

- leptospirosis is around and can cause lethal liver and kidney disease in dogs.
- water logging in metro cities can be a source of such fatal infections. Transmitted via urine of rats/dead rats --> Dogs can readily become infected despite vaccinations.
- common in farms too, wherever there is rat population.
- leptospirosis is a contagious to humans as well, and infected dogs, their urine becomes an important carrier for humans.
- initial signs include vomiting, jaundice, reduced urination, kidney failure.
- if not identified and treated early, it can become fatal.
- early diagnosis and specific treatment can save your pet.
- proper precautions and hygiene can save your family from exposure.
- do not let your pets walk through, or drink from water puddles.

Please speak to us for more information on this.
Have a safe monsoon!

Dear Sir, my 4 n years Old Lahaspho male dog has a problem by birth In its both of back legs (slightly bend legs). But it can walk n run well. Now I consulted a my regular doctor for mating, he said my dog legs were weak and it can't mate a dog. Am so upset seeking for a solution. Is there any alternative options to strengthen my dog's legs. Kindly help me.

M. V SC & A.H. (Veterinary Medicine
Veterinarian, Delhi
If as you say your dog can run and walk, clearily indicates dog has strength. For mating like any living being, the mood should b there to mate and the bitch has to b in heat only then dog will mate. Sinply leave dog with bitch who is to b mated and leave them alone. When a pet dog is left to mate for the first time, it will show shyness and thus may not mate untill bitch provokes the dog.

How can I take care of my newborn puppy? and what food should I give to him? Please advice.

M.V.Sc (Surgery)
Veterinarian, Mohali
There is no replacement for mother milk so it is better if you can give that. But if not then you can use commercial available milk for puppy like lactol or baby milk from royal canin. You have to do extra care on digestion for artificial milk.

I have a 13 years old pomeranian bitch. She had stopped eating since a few weeks. On getting her blood tested and sonography, reports say that her kidney is weak and urea level is high. What should I do?

B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Bangalore
With the age the dogs kidney starts losing its functional ability. So now all you have to do is managemental and supportive therapy. Changes in the feed like giving renal diet and phosphate binders has to be followed. If the dog is still not taking food, better to go for fluid therapy.

My 7 months old labrador has some problem in his right forelimb (leg. Due to this he feel some pain when he stands up after a long rest. I gave him nimulid for three days. He is okay but when he stands up after sleeping he feel jerk on his leg and after a long walk he starts jerk walking.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Hello, I suggest you get a small blood test done called complete blood count (cbc) and two xrays of the affected leg one from front (ap view) and from side (lateral view). There can be two chances, either bone deformity or blood parasite infection. Both can be treated if diagnosed early as possible. Once done, please share the reports with me to advice you further.

De-worming should be done . Give a well balanced diet. Supplement with calcium and multivitamins available in the local market. Even the symptoms doesn't reduce after 10 days take to the nearest vet for further investigation.

I have a doberman puppy. It's 5 weeks old and I need amputation and ear cropping done. Ear cropping needs to take place within a few weeks. I there any decent vet surgeon that I can approach.

B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Hoshiarpur
As the cropping of ear and tail docking is banned in india so I suggest you not to go for it. This is a illegal practice and should not be performed. Ad when you go for cropping etc you will not able to participate in any dog show.

8 Tips For Your Dog This Summer!

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad

1. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water all the time.

2. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside.

3. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day. Avoid 5-7 pm evening as the steam emitting from the road can kill your pet with heat stroke!

4. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like coal tar roads) because it can burn your dog's paws.

5. If you feel it's hot outside, it's even hotter for your pet - make sure your pet has a means of cooling off.

6. Keep your dog free of external insects (fleas, ticks) - consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet.

7. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it's appropriate for your pet).

8. If you have a short nose breed like pugs or bulldogs, keep a Turkish towel with you whenever traveling. Whenever you notice he/she is panting heavily, you can soak the towel in water and wrap it around his body to have a local cooling effect.

Yesterday 1 truck ran over my pet dog leg which leads to serious damage in its lower limb is there any treatment required to give it to relieve her. Some kind of painkiller so suggest me.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Do not let your dog move at all. There will not b any pain then. As no pain killers can remove the pain fully.

My dog sleeps outside and mosquitoes bite him, should I get him anything to prevent dog heartworm disease? what should I give him?

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
It depends on which part of india you reside in. We do not get heart worms in india, except a few anecdotal reports from northeastern parts. There are monthly oral or topicals recommended, but again availability in india is doubtful since the infection isn' t endemic here. Hope this is helpful.

I have a 8 months old Labrador. Its fur is shedding so much, it got ticks about one Month ago, and left some spots without fur. I have used vitabest as suggested by my vet. Its of no use. Just for touching dog , my hands are full of its hair , Its shampoo is reltix. Please suggest how can I reduce its shedding. Thank you in advance.

Alopecia means hair fall is common in pets due to calcium multivitamin and protein deficient diet also at junction of two season due to moisture they shed off hairs so my advice is give liquid vencalp 7.5 ml, actipet 5 drops and high protein diet of your choice containing 28-32% protein try to maintain a dog dry and ectoparasite by dusting powder frescia.
